To think that all smoking AND vaping should be illegal in public

I'm sick of having to breathe in others' vape clouds when out and about. It's worse than fag smoke in some ways- partly because the clouds of vape fumes are so big but also because it's less well policed than smoking, presumably because it's still considered relatively harmless until they find evidence to the contrary. Today I've had to walk through vape clouds on a railway platform (manned station, staff completely couldn't care less), actually had a person sitting behind me on the train vaping and I had to walk through vape clouds of Tesco staff vaping directly outside the public entrance to the shop.
Why is it legal to inflict this poison on others?

AIBU to think that it should be limited to private homes, private vehicles and enclosed public designated smoking sheds only.

Also - how is it legal to vape and drive - surely your visibility is affected?

I find it depressing to see how many teenagers vape. It’s beyond grim how easily addicted people become to them. I could in some ways understand if they made you ‘look cool’ in the same ways smoking was depicted as doing back in the 40s and 50s but there absolutely nothing cool about puffing on what looks like a highlighter pen. Reminds me of the caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland…. whhoooo are yoooouuu 🌬️💨💨💨

And I find it depressing how judgemental people can be about anything remotely new or different while touting 'be kind' twaddle.

The highlighter pen design is a deliberate ploy by the vaping industry to target and tempt in children and young people. They don't look out of place in a pencil case or blazer pocket, do they?!

And that's the main issue for me. Fully consenting adults, say 21+, fine if that's what they choose to do. I particularly support those adults who are using vaping to stop smoking cigarettes. What I hate - and what I think should be made illegal by our government, that is if they've got the balls to go against the vaping industry - is the obvious targeting of children and young people by the vaping industry with pop colours, sweetie flavours, bright displays and low costs. It's shameful and damaging.

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 09/05/2023 12:17

@MmaRra I agree, I too support vaping as a means to stop smoking tobacco products. The sweet tastes, low price point and catchy designs are deliberate attempts to entice younger users. Get them hooked early to keep them for life. It’s utterly shameful, I imagine long term health implications won’t be felt for a while by which point the harm will already be done.

ExpatInSlavikLand · 09/05/2023 12:57

Both bother me tremendously. Ban away, I say, keep it in your own homes if you really can't or won't give up, and leave the rest of us alone!

ExpatInSlavikLand · 09/05/2023 12:59

SunnySaturdayMorning · 08/05/2023 20:05

The difference is that smoking and vaping harms those and everyone else around them.

And as we know, these addicts lack any form of willpower and self control so need it banning for their own good because they’re unable to stop on their own.

This. I don't want mine and my toddler's health damaged by others being inconsiderate, thank you very much.

Catspyjamas17 · 09/05/2023 12:59

YANBU. Vile vape clouds almost make me wish for smoke. Horrible chemical stuff.

Do people genuinely not understand that it’s not about a bad smell or judging other peoples vices, it’s about a high concentration of toxins and irritants in places that you can’t avoid? That people blithely inflict that on people with asthma, copd and long covid, triggering symptoms that can last for days; and onto kids in prams and pregnant women, without any idea what future health issues that might cause. It’s not judgemental to think toddlers at a bus stop shouldn’t be breathing in your fumes, nor is it fussy for people with lung issues to expect you not to break rules about vaping indoors when that affects the rest of their day.

I can't stand walking through vape clouds. It's literally having the contents of someone else's lungs engulf you.

How do you think people catch covid?

Mistressofnone · 09/05/2023 13:51

@wildinthecountry exactly

Divorcedalongtime · 09/05/2023 13:53

I’m severely allergic to smells and find vaping impossible to deal with, smoke I can deal with better. Both should be banned altogether

Splodgerbodgerbadger · 09/05/2023 13:53

YANBU especially about vaping it stinks, on the walk to school and round the gates they are all puffing away on them. Horrible things.

mamabear715 · 09/05/2023 14:12

I agree re vapes being brightly coloured & scented, cigarette packs are now covered in warnings & photos of lung cancer & the like, whichever brand they are, to put young people off smoking.
It IS shameful that vape manufacturers are trying to reel kids in.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 09/05/2023 14:18

Where are all these hoards of vaping school kids getting their vapes from?
Someone must be buying them for them?

The vape shops duh! Most of them are quite happy to sell to underage. The kids know which ones they can go to.

A bit like when I was a teen buying my Hooch.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 09/05/2023 16:35

Vapes are age restricted so very easy to get any shops selling them to teens in a lot of trouble

CornishGem1975 · 09/05/2023 17:04

Clearly nobody cares enough to do so. There's also a vape shop every few yards in towns now. Or older teens buy them and sell them in school, that happens a lot.

Vegetus · 09/05/2023 17:19

I was buying fags in school and vapes are far less harmful so on balance if kids are going to be stupid and do something unhealthy to be 'cool' then it's probably better they vape.

Obviously it shouldn't be encouraged but kids are resourceful and will always find a way to do dumb stuff.

Antisocialfluffmonster · 09/05/2023 20:28

To be fair, I don't think you're being unreasonable about smoking/vaping in a place that impacts other people. But as to vaping in cars impacting vision, it doesn't fill up the car with smoke, so it's no more distracting than people with loud music, eating, or having an argument whilst driving.

I vape a lot, I used to smoke, I know vaping isn't good for me, but given the state of my health, I'll be gone long before it causes me an issue.

people drink and destroy their liver, eat and destroy their body, and if someone wants a simple pleasure in life that doesn't hurt anyone else, then it should be up to them if they do it or not.

Probably plenty of yet to be seen long term impacts of vaping, same as fillers, and all sorts of non-medically required procedures. I can't imagine anything more boring than the sterile modern life that many people seem to advocate for, nothing wrong with doing something that you enjoy as long as you don't hurt anyone else (which passive smoking did do)

so perfumes, deodorants, cooking smells, cleaning products?

Lots of the enjoyable things in life do get banned, and there's a huge difference between saying you'd like it if you could go about your day without having to come into contact with it (reasonable) and saying that people shouldn't be able to pick their own poison.

Life is stressful enough without having to live it without any of the fun things too.

Jazzyjezzabelle · 09/05/2023 20:34

Can’t get worked up about Vape. Usually smells quite nice and it’s no biggie for me.

CeriB82 · 09/05/2023 21:28

I loathe both.

My colleague “pops to the toilets” more often since she stopped smoking and started vaping. She even has her vape on her desk, like an ornament to be adorned. Every time she is out of the room the vape does a disappearing act. Its like magic!

she uses the vape much more than cigarettes and confessed to vaping in the bath, and she never smoked in it. Even at night, wakes up in the nights, vapes. That is bloody ridiculous and stupid.

To all smells? Genuinely curious. What kind of reaction?
Eg if you walked by someone with strong perfume or BO, a kitchen with strong smells, some farts or microwaves salmon- would they cause the same reaction.

OldBun58 · 19/02/2025 08:57

Neighbours vaping in the flat below has caused me extensive smell allergy. I am now allergic to not only vapes but all fragrances too, including those in cleaning products and essential oils. When vapers open windows in their flat below us, the smell rises up to our level above and enters our windows. Sometimes we smell weed mixed with vapes too. It causes me severe allergies, and in hot weather I am unable to open windows to cool the apartment or get fresh air.
They also spray their lobby and communal staircase with perfume to hide the smell, which I have become allergic to since they moved in 2 years ago. My husband suffers from lung cancer and has breathing difficulties. He also gets affected by these fumes that irritate his lungs and cause profound coughing.
It has become a nightmare living in a flat, which we are having to sell and move to a detached house despite very tight budget.
Vapers seem to have no conciensious or consderation for others. People, wake up, the vaping pandemic has arrived! And it will cost NHS a lot more than the profit made from vapes.
