To think that all smoking AND vaping should be illegal in public

I'm sick of having to breathe in others' vape clouds when out and about. It's worse than fag smoke in some ways- partly because the clouds of vape fumes are so big but also because it's less well policed than smoking, presumably because it's still considered relatively harmless until they find evidence to the contrary. Today I've had to walk through vape clouds on a railway platform (manned station, staff completely couldn't care less), actually had a person sitting behind me on the train vaping and I had to walk through vape clouds of Tesco staff vaping directly outside the public entrance to the shop.
Why is it legal to inflict this poison on others?

AIBU to think that it should be limited to private homes, private vehicles and enclosed public designated smoking sheds only.

Also - how is it legal to vape and drive - surely your visibility is affected?

Bet your business is doing well. Jeez. Get a grip

It is, thanks.

Why do you think you have the right to do your seedy little addiction when it has been banned? Or do you really lack that much self control that you just can’t wait? How embarrassing.

Obels · 08/05/2023 15:51

Personally I don't mind vape clouds as I quite like the smell of some of the flavours they use. Fag smoke makes me feel nauseous on the other hand. I'm not that bothered about the vaping but am about the fags.

GoodChat · 08/05/2023 15:52

@Blossomtoes you're completely right about there not being a ban. I just looked it up. I assumed it was the same as smoking and personally I think it should be, for the reason of it being intrusive and affecting others unnecessarily without us knowing the risks it holds.

Anyway while we're at demanding things be banned- farting in public should be banned imo

Not necessarily controllable if you have certain medical problems.

Cornchip · 08/05/2023 16:06

Always have a laugh at these threads.

Banning alcohol would be much more beneficial than banning vaping. AFAIA vaping doesn’t turn some of the population into physically abusive louts- alcohol intake affects everyone, vaping doesn’t bar the 2 seconds you might inhale something that smells of cotton candy.

Or do we not want to ban alcohol because the middle class mummies want a glass of wine every evening?

RagingWoke · 08/05/2023 15:38

@BatildaB there are very few ingredients in eliquid. I cant imagine that many people have asthma severe enough a single whiff will incapacitate them, at least no more so than the exhaust fumes and general particulates in the air. And this lady was on a busy central London street, next to a building site, bus stops and train station... my mates small vape cloud was the least offensive thing happening.

Fully with @Jonei here, it was just a twat acting twattishly.

triggers symptoms for 14% of people with asthma

and yes, many people have to avoid breathing in traffic fumes and brick dust etc, which makes life harder. Personally I wear a mask for travel in areas where there is a lot of air pollution. And I have an air purifier in my house to deal with neighbours woodburners. Those are annoyances I have to live with. The issue with vapes is that people unexpectedly breathe it right in your face in the street or at the bus stop, or like some people in this thread, indoors in public places.

why so much resistance to the obvious fact that vaping is not completely harmless and secondhand vaping can be quite a big deal for quite a lot of people? It’s not just that it smells bad or is annoying, it’s harmful.

Secondhand vaping might not seem like a big deal, but it can pose health risks to those around you.

Yes you're quite right, @Obels . My apologies. Consider that one struck from the list.

The rest still stand though. Especially the perfume one. And I'll replace the above with people who don't pick up after their dog poops AND the ones who do, but decorate trees with their bagged leavings.

Probably best to wear a mask all the time you go out then. As you can't control what smells you come across.

QueefQueen80s · 08/05/2023 16:19

Far far more pleasant than a cloud of smoke.

elevenplusdilemma · 08/05/2023 16:23

@Blossomtoes

Steam=water vapour. Without a doubt harmless (unless you breathe it in when it's still hot enough to scald!).

Vape clouds= a mix of propylene glycol (a solvent), flavours and sweeteners (artificial chemicals). All of which take on different properties when heated to become an aerosol, the effect of which on the body are relatively unknown as yet.

Not comparable at all.

Wow.

They're obviously someone who doesn't drive or use electronics (such as laptop or smartphone), only ever wears clothing entirely produced in 100% ethical factories, eats an ethical vegan diet and never drinks (except for the home brew made from the fruit bushes in their garden).

uncomfortablydumb53 · 08/05/2023 17:15

I'm actually a proud vaper!
I gave up a 15 a day 25 year cigarette habit 6 years ago
I vape at home and discreetly in public. There is no passive vaping!
Aroma yes, but so is perfume and scented candles
I dont intend to stop vaping or stop my coffee habit either

Except that it was banned where that poster was vaping, and it is banned and most places where smoking is.

So much vitriol from you, you little addict 😉

Nothinglefttogiv · 08/05/2023 17:19

There is a MASSIVE difference between a tiny epen type vape, where you breathe out bigger 'clouds' on a cold day, and a giant fuck off mega battery vape that emits huge storm clouds that could hide the giant at the top of the beanstalk.

BatildaB · 08/05/2023 17:19

Do people genuinely not understand that it’s not about a bad smell or judging other peoples vices, it’s about a high concentration of toxins and irritants in places that you can’t avoid? That people blithely inflict that on people with asthma, copd and long covid, triggering symptoms that can last for days; and onto kids in prams and pregnant women, without any idea what future health issues that might cause. It’s not judgemental to think toddlers at a bus stop shouldn’t be breathing in your fumes, nor is it fussy for people with lung issues to expect you not to break rules about vaping indoors when that affects the rest of their day.

PurplePineapple1 · 08/05/2023 17:23

PoorOldHorse · 08/05/2023 14:33

Hyperbolically calling for things you personally don't like to be banned should be...er...banned. I'm getting a bit fed up with it now.

This.

You got smoking banned, leave the bloody vapers alone. Or ban perfume, stinky kids, stinky dogs, polluting cars, etc. Just get on with your lives and leave people alone ffs.

Yes that's true. Although I dislike the smell of any vaping, it's the huge clouds that I object to, knowing that I'll be breathing it in as I walk past.

Happy to be an addict. I like vaping. I could probably give up. But I don't intend to because I enjoy it. And I will continue to vape out in public.

Also happy to call out the self righteous authoritarians out on this thread for what they are: Twats.

I have no idea where you live, but I live in a busy city and this is not, by any stretch of the imagination, my daily experience.

01F · 08/05/2023 17:32

No you're not.

It's about time at least you can eat outside without smokers lighting up.

GenderCriticalTrumpets · 08/05/2023 17:34

YANBU and most people who vape are inconsiderate bell ends who think nothing of blowing a big cloud of vile smelling smoke right into people's faces. Should be completely illegal it is grim. I like what Australia are doing re banning the disposable ones and cracking down on the stupid, child-catcher style flavours and packaging.
