Bank holiday rage

Reality · 08/05/2023 08:36

If one more person says to me ‘yeah but you’ll get an extra day off’ about working today I am going to lose my shit.

Family group chat have said it over the weekend (they all have office jobs) and then even my DH has said it this morning!

Yes I’ve worked every day this BH weekend. No that doesn’t mean I’ll get an extra day off for the extra BH. That’s not how it works.

I wasn’t resentful about it but I am starting to be with everyone around me telling me how great it is that we ‘all’ get an extra days holiday. And I think many of them are in for a disappointment when they notice that they haven’t got an extra day either, it’ll just come off their annual leave entitlement.

But that is how it should work, not taken from your AL entitlement but added to it. Think it is your employer you should be getting angry with not everyone else

juneybean · 08/05/2023 08:39

As pp say, you will still have a day to use somewhere whereas some of us have to use 8 (or 9 this year) holidays for bank holidays.

pictoosh · 08/05/2023 08:39

This is a symptom of a skewed work-life balance...one that most of us suffer from.
Yabu to be so annoyed but I can see why you are...free time is precious.

whodawhodaeho · 08/05/2023 08:39

Bank holidays are supposed to be in ADDITION to your regular hols - so I get 30 days PLUS bank hols.
some jobs have you work bank hols though, I get that but many people will be off, or getting a day in lieu or getting paid 1.5 time …
if you aren’t then perhaps it’s time to change- given how much rage you’re having over it??

Not for me-I have got an extra bank holiday. Why haven’t you?

adomizo · 08/05/2023 08:40

U need a new job

CharlotteDoyle · 08/05/2023 08:40

Well, some people do get today off as an extra (free) holiday.

Hellocatshome · 08/05/2023 08:41

If you work a bank holiday you should get a day off in lieu to use another time. Ask your employers why you haven't.

pictoosh · 08/05/2023 08:41

And yes, speak to your employer. Other peoples assumption is correct.

Hoppinggreen · 08/05/2023 08:42

DH isn’t happy either, he’s SE on a day rate so today will cost him ££££.
Plus he’s an ardent Republican so “those parasites are costing me even more money” apparently

Sissynova · 08/05/2023 08:43

Thats exactly how it works though. How do you work bank holidays and not understand that?

I'm working today and getting BH/Sunday rates, but I'm not getting anything else.

It depends on the contract.

No recognition at all that it's a BH isn't 'on'. but still legal.

Womencanlift · 08/05/2023 08:43

Not off my entitlement. Just like the extra days last year they were exactly that, extra

Most employers, not all I know but most will give their employees the hours in lieu if they have to work today or any BH

cushioncovers · 08/05/2023 08:43

Why aren't you getting the hours added to your annual leave allowance to use at another time. Or a day off in lieu?

wasacasa · 08/05/2023 08:44

Not everyone will get this bank holiday off or a day in lieu.

Stickykidney · 08/05/2023 08:46

Same here. The same 'at least it's friday' gets to me too but not as much as it used to.. learning to let go slowly!😁

LittleBearPad · 08/05/2023 08:46

Employers have to give 28 days holiday at a minimum - 4 weeks holiday and 8 days BHs.

The OP’s employer doesn’t have to give an extra day because of today‘a BH.

Many employers are giving extra days off so people assume all of them have to.

YANBU OP but your employer is to blame.

Gloopyhoop · 08/05/2023 08:46

I get it. I work in a hotel, we don't get anything extra and I still have to go to work today. The only day we get DT is Christmas Day. It's annoying but the job works for me every other non bank holiday day of the year.

Schroedingersimmigrant · 08/05/2023 08:48

People are looking at it from a point where business closes for BH. You don't generally get it in hospitality etc and no, employer doesn't have to give you the day in lieu.

Reality · 08/05/2023 08:51

Some of the replies to this are proving my point.

This is EXACTLY what I’m talking about.

People in jobs with more than statutory allowance, with employers who give them 30 days off plus bank holidays., telling me I will get an extra day. That is not the norm.

Holiday entitlement is 28 days and bank holidays aren’t special or extra. But people keep assuring me they are and the assumption that everyone in the country is getting an extra day off is making my head explode.

AlltheFs · 08/05/2023 08:51

I don’t even work Monday’s and I still get an extra day (pro rata) added to my annual leave.
If you want the benefits of a bank hol weekend change career. It’s not your family’s fault you are working.

Neededanewuserhandle · 08/05/2023 08:51

YANBU I used to get. this when I worked in a filling station - no extra time off or premium paid for Bank Holiday working, but every fucker used to tell me I was getting these. cunts.

No they aren’t “supposed to be in ADDITION”, it is completely up to the employer. So long as the employer provides statutory minimum, it is up to them whether they add an extra day onto leave for the extra bank holiday or tell employees to take the day off but that it will come off their overall total.

Neededanewuserhandle · 08/05/2023 08:54

Hellocatshome · 08/05/2023 08:41

Incorrect.

Spectre8 · 08/05/2023 08:55

Well if you don't like your current employment terms go get a job whose terms you did like so you have extra bank Holidays off too then. What's the point of whining about others who have better employers?
