Bank holiday rage

Reality · 08/05/2023 08:36

If one more person says to me ‘yeah but you’ll get an extra day off’ about working today I am going to lose my shit.

Family group chat have said it over the weekend (they all have office jobs) and then even my DH has said it this morning!

Yes I’ve worked every day this BH weekend. No that doesn’t mean I’ll get an extra day off for the extra BH. That’s not how it works.

I wasn’t resentful about it but I am starting to be with everyone around me telling me how great it is that we ‘all’ get an extra days holiday. And I think many of them are in for a disappointment when they notice that they haven’t got an extra day either, it’ll just come off their annual leave entitlement.

@Reality I get it.
Lots of office job 9-5 people just dont get how other sectors work.
I dont live in the UK now so it's not a bank holiday here but if I have one more person tell me how lucky I am to have my days free to do whatever I want when I'm on night shifts I'll nut them one. No Norman I'm not spending a day on the beach - I'll be fucking SLEEPING!

Lots of office based people haven't been granted this bank holiday either...

Check your contract. By law it has to be 20 days plus bank holidays as a minimum. It probably is.

Though as you are working, others who are not perhaps should say little out of consideration.

No it doesn’t, there is no mention of bank holidays in law.

In law it needs to be 28 days for a full time employee.

No by law it has to be 28 days, including Bank Holidays so an employer can this year give 19 days and 9 Bank Holidays. Some people will have less days to select themselves not more. Its the lack of understanding of this that the op is complaining about.

No, it doesn't.

A full time worker is entitled to 28 days of annual leave which may or may not include bank holidays.

Some companies do 20 days plus 8 bank holidays.
Some will do 28 days plus bank holidays.
Some just do 28 days of leave per year.

Others will offer even more than that.

But by law, nobody is entitled to bank holidays off and they're not entitled to a day off in lieu or extra pay either.

This isn't true either 🙈

Annual leave entitlement is 5.6 weeks per year and doesn't have to include bank holidays at all.

Charles is a pampered, intemperate, adulterous child-man who has foisted this expensive excrescence on a country with no thought for the people. You are right to be angry, if I wasn't retired I would be absolutely livid.

Yes I’ve worked every day this BH weekend. No that doesn’t mean I’ll get an extra day off for the extra BH. That’s not how it works.
But that is how it should work, not taken from your AL entitlement but added to it. Think it is your employer you should be getting angry with not everyone else

This. Most people are getting an extra day off.

JudgeRudy · 08/05/2023 09:41

Soggydog · 08/05/2023 09:11

I think that what people are trying to say is that you are fortunate as you get to choose when you want to use the day of holiday allowance that most have to use on a bank holiday. Most people have to use it on a specific day ie a bank holiday as that is when their office is closed whereas you can choose (although presumably can't choose today). For some it might irk them they have to take a day off when they don't want to whilst others might enjoy being off when the majority of people are.

They might be trying to say that, but they would be incorrect. She doesn't get to take it today, she doesn't get to take it another time. She doesn't get to take an extra days holiday this year (or last). She gets the bare minimum her employer is allowed to pay her by law. If we got another one it would make no difference to her holiday entitlement.

I get why she's irritated. Here we have a whole thread with a comprehensive explanation, yet still people are presuming to know better and making incorrect assumptions!

Change2banon · 08/05/2023 09:42

whodawhodaeho · 08/05/2023 08:39

Bank holidays are supposed to be in ADDITION to your regular hols - so I get 30 days PLUS bank hols.
some jobs have you work bank hols though, I get that but many people will be off, or getting a day in lieu or getting paid 1.5 time …
if you aren’t then perhaps it’s time to change- given how much rage you’re having over it??

Not true.

YOUR holidays might work this way but not all do. Some employers are x days PLUS bank hols, others are x days INCLUDING bank hols.
So for some, this extra bank holiday means they lose 1 of their own holiday days.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 08/05/2023 09:43

Most people are getting an extra day off.

What other people are getting is irrelevant though - it's not the law that you're entitled to bank holidays off - nor are you necessarily entitled to an extra day off due to an extra bank holiday.

As long as OP is getting her 28 days a year, bank holidays are irrelevant and have nothing to do with it.

Some contracts will say "20 days plus all bank holidays" so yes, those people will get an extra day off.

But if your contract says "28 days annual leave" with no mention of bank holidays, you won't get an extra day off for today.

How is jt Charles's fault people don't understand AL and extra bank holidays🙈

Questionasker1 · 08/05/2023 09:43

Get your frustration, work in hospitality so bank holidays just another day, but busier, no extra day, off no extra pay. But a lot of customers assume we are getting time and a half or double pay (only for Christmas day where I am)

Change2banon · 08/05/2023 09:44

Blossomtoes · 08/05/2023 09:40

Nope. Some people are getting an extra day off, some are losing a day of their own AL days.

mainsfed · 08/05/2023 09:45

Reality · 08/05/2023 09:26

I’m not complaining that I don’t get the extra day, it’s standard in my industry.

Im just complaining about everyone telling me I do!

The just tell them you don”t?

Not seeing issue. You’re mistaking idle chit chat for bragging, no one cares who has today off.

Blossomtoes · 08/05/2023 09:46

Change2banon · 08/05/2023 09:44

I didn’t say “all”. 🤷‍♀️

Katherine1985 · 08/05/2023 09:46

It’s annoying if family and DH are saying this, they should listen and care enough about what you say about conditions at your workplace!! My DD is working today and I know she won’t get a day in lieu. She hasn’t had to tell me that more than once.

Others, ok - most would assume you’ll get another day off

Livelovebehappy · 08/05/2023 09:47

But clearly it does bother you. Otherwise you wouldn’t give a toss when others mention it?

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 08/05/2023 09:47

@mainsfed but she is telling them, and they're trying to tell her she's wrong 🙈

Like half the posters on this thread are doing because apparently most people don't understand holiday entitlement in this country 😬

Wrong

alwaysandforevernow · 08/05/2023 09:52

Can't you just ignore them, though, op? So they're wrong. And?

A bit of resilience goes a long way, unless you've been going on and on in your family group chat about having to work today? Unless you work down a saltmine maybe you should stop going on about it?

Blossomtoes · 08/05/2023 09:52

You do know that holiday entitlement varies between employers? And that some are more generous than the statutory requirement?

WillowKnicks · 08/05/2023 09:53

Nope. Somepeople are getting an extra day off, some are losing a day of their own AL days.

EXACTLY this! Where I work bank holidays are taken out of our holiday entitlement, which is at the employer's discretion.

I worked on Saturday as normal but lose another day's AL on a BH on a day when it's all over!

Minierme · 08/05/2023 09:53

Many, many people will be given bank holidays as an extra even if they have to work them. Sounds like you have a crappy employer. Find a new one. The rage should be about being poorly treated not about people with better conditions being surprised by your situation.

Neededanewuserhandle · 08/05/2023 09:58

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 08/05/2023 09:01

She's not whining about her employer - she's annoyed because everyone is assuming they know her contract better than she does!

And people are doing it on this thread as well - it's incredibly irritating.

Agreed.
