Bank holiday rage

If one more person says to me ‘yeah but you’ll get an extra day off’ about working today I am going to lose my shit.

Family group chat have said it over the weekend (they all have office jobs) and then even my DH has said it this morning!

Yes I’ve worked every day this BH weekend. No that doesn’t mean I’ll get an extra day off for the extra BH. That’s not how it works.

I wasn’t resentful about it but I am starting to be with everyone around me telling me how great it is that we ‘all’ get an extra days holiday. And I think many of them are in for a disappointment when they notice that they haven’t got an extra day either, it’ll just come off their annual leave entitlement.

I get your anger! Dh has to work every bh with no extra pay of extra day off, and we never have a family bh together which is depressing. Then I am self employed and my biggest work day is a Monday so not only do a lose loads of £££ for not working those days, I also have a shed load of admin trying to sort people out and change things. I get so annoyed all the people excited about getting a long weekend!

Dh gets the equivalent off, you can't do Mondays anyway, so surely that's better for you than him having to take the Monday

I’ve just looked it up on .gov website assuming you’re in the UK.
I didn’t realise (and it sucks) your employer can use bank holidays as a part of your statutory leave entitlement. So you should get a lieu day to meet the statutory minimum if that’s all your employer offers but I agree it feels a bit miserable.
I work as a nurse on set days one of which is monday - sick of people asking what I’m doing on the bank holidays! So sending a hug x

She won't get a lieu day because the coronation BH is in addition to the standard 8 BH's.

As long as she gets the statutory minimum, of 28 days leave, everything else is irrelevant.

You are entitled to it by law (in leu) if you haven't been then you should be angry at your employer not your friends and family

No

You are not entitled to it by law, her employers do not need to give her a day off in lieu

Is it any wonder the op is fed up of people telling her she is wrong.

There is/was no legal entitlement for the extra bank holiday, unless a contract states x days + bH's. It is/was up to individual employers to decide whether to grant it or not. If the contract states 28 days (legal minimum), then regardless of how many BH's there are, that's all you get.

Oh yes. Doh!

PinkCherryBlossoms · 10/05/2023 10:46

Yanbu. It's not a fair system and people can be remarkably ignorant about it. Very annoying.

Beastieboys · 10/05/2023 14:28

Surely if he's SE he can choose to work or not . If I have to work my o/h who is SE carries on with his paid work

Summerlovin121 · 10/05/2023 14:29

Depends on your contract. I get my holiday plus bank holidays so it is an extra day
