Bank holiday rage

Reality · 08/05/2023 08:36

If one more person says to me ‘yeah but you’ll get an extra day off’ about working today I am going to lose my shit.

Family group chat have said it over the weekend (they all have office jobs) and then even my DH has said it this morning!

Yes I’ve worked every day this BH weekend. No that doesn’t mean I’ll get an extra day off for the extra BH. That’s not how it works.

I wasn’t resentful about it but I am starting to be with everyone around me telling me how great it is that we ‘all’ get an extra days holiday. And I think many of them are in for a disappointment when they notice that they haven’t got an extra day either, it’ll just come off their annual leave entitlement.

And yes, speak to your employer. Other peoples assumption is correct.

No it isn't.

kitsuneghost · 08/05/2023 08:55

Nobody is wrong but there are different contracts
Some may say 33 days including bank holidays
Some may say 25 days plus bank holidays
The former does not get an extra bank holiday therefore it would come out AL. however some employers may give it as extra but they are not obliged too.

CeeJay81 · 08/05/2023 08:55

I get totally get why your annoyed. I work in an industry that's open almost every day of the year but we are getting an extra day's leave. Same as we did last year. I do think its very unfair that some employers aren't giving the extra day's leave though.

Neededanewuserhandle · 08/05/2023 08:56

whodawhodaeho · 08/05/2023 08:39

Bank holidays are supposed to be in ADDITION to your regular hols - so I get 30 days PLUS bank hols.
some jobs have you work bank hols though, I get that but many people will be off, or getting a day in lieu or getting paid 1.5 time …
if you aren’t then perhaps it’s time to change- given how much rage you’re having over it??

Not correct.

This is also incorrect. The law requires 5.6 weeks. That can include Bank Hols if that's what the employer chooses.

Furrydogmum · 08/05/2023 08:57

DH's company isn't closed today and they aren't giving a lieu day either :-/ not compulsory..

EsmeShelby · 08/05/2023 08:58

I've got an extra day. I have to take it today though. DH has an extra day added to his annual leave.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 08/05/2023 08:59

I get it OP - it was exactly the same when I was in retail. We opened every single day of the year except Christmas Day and Bank Holidays were just a normal part of that.

As long as you get the statutory minimum days off per year, it's irrelevant whether that includes bank holidays or not.

Awrite · 08/05/2023 09:00

I get the bank holiday but I was aware that it was voluntary for employers. Same as the funeral last year.

Yy to posters on this thread proving your point.

And those minimising your anger can fuck off, op is allowed a rant and allowed to use colourful, hyperbolic language.

Berklilly · 08/05/2023 09:00

Reality · 08/05/2023 08:51

Some of the replies to this are proving my point.

This is EXACTLY what I’m talking about.

People in jobs with more than statutory allowance, with employers who give them 30 days off plus bank holidays., telling me I will get an extra day. That is not the norm.

Holiday entitlement is 28 days and bank holidays aren’t special or extra. But people keep assuring me they are and the assumption that everyone in the country is getting an extra day off is making my head explode.

But that's not the norm. Most people would assume you get a day in lieu because that's what a lot of employers do, even when normally on statutory allowance. It sucks your employer doesn't, but it's them you should blame!

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 08/05/2023 09:01

Spectre8 · 08/05/2023 08:55

Well if you don't like your current employment terms go get a job whose terms you did like so you have extra bank Holidays off too then. What's the point of whining about others who have better employers?

She's not whining about her employer - she's annoyed because everyone is assuming they know her contract better than she does!

And people are doing it on this thread as well - it's incredibly irritating.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 08/05/2023 09:03

But it is the norm in many industries - bank holdings are just normal working days for millions of people. They don't get extra pay or an extra days annual leave elsewhere.

She's also not moaning about her employer, she's annoyed because people think they know more about her contract and holiday allowance than she does.

You know that different employers offer different leave entitlements anyway though don’t you? So that some employers give an extra day this year and others don’t, is no more unfair than the general fact that employers are different anyway.

Soggydog · 08/05/2023 09:11

I think that what people are trying to say is that you are fortunate as you get to choose when you want to use the day of holiday allowance that most have to use on a bank holiday. Most people have to use it on a specific day ie a bank holiday as that is when their office is closed whereas you can choose (although presumably can't choose today). For some it might irk them they have to take a day off when they don't want to whilst others might enjoy being off when the majority of people are.

How many times does this need to be explained.

OP is not getting another day to take another time!

Is there anything people of Mumsnet will not turn into "you are so fortunate"?

I can't believe the "you are fortunate" made it on this thread😂

Malarandras · 08/05/2023 09:17

I am getting today off as an extra free day. It is not coming off my annual leave balance. Guess some of us are just more fortunate in our employment terms and conditions than others.

Dontcallmescarface · 08/05/2023 09:20

The legal minimum holiday entitlement for FT employees is 28 days. This INCLUDES the normal 8 days bank holiday a year (either worked in lieu or taken as a BH). As this year has 9 Bank Holidays, the the OP is correct when she says that, for some employees, if the employer has not added the extra day and the workplace is closed then it will come out of the 28 days minimum, meaning that those employees will "lose" a day they could have taken when they wanted.

I get 26 days + BH's so have got the extra day this year my DSiS has the statutory minimum of 28 days and has had to take the extra day (her workplace is closed today), out of her A/L.

Lamelie · 08/05/2023 09:20

I 100% would be fed up in your shoes @Reality but the problem is with your employers, not your friends and family.

Hoppinggreen · 08/05/2023 08:42

DH isn’t happy either, he’s SE on a day rate so today will cost him ££££.
Plus he’s an ardent Republican so “those parasites are costing me even more money” apparently

I’m working today because I’m SE ( yes I know I’m on Mn on a break). What’s stopping your husband working today if he wants to ?

This is where the confusion is. The extra BH this weekend was optional with the decision sitting with the individual employers. I'm in HR and put a message out in our company to say that we had granted it. No impact on annual leave.

Lots of companies have rejected it and it sounds like OP works for one of them. She won't get an extra day to take whenever she wants to. She just won't get the extra day that some of us have had.

OP I do understand your frustration.

alwaysandforevernow · 08/05/2023 09:21

It's really not worth getting worked up about.

I freelance on a Monday and Tuesday going into schools.

I'm not at work today because the schools are closed so I'm losing a day's work.

That's life.

No head exploding or wailing about it on the internet required.

Reality · 08/05/2023 09:26

I’m not complaining that I don’t get the extra day, it’s standard in my industry.

Im just complaining about everyone telling me I do!

LlynTegid · 08/05/2023 09:29

Check your contract. By law it has to be 20 days plus bank holidays as a minimum. It probably is.

Though as you are working, others who are not perhaps should say little out of consideration.

LostFrog · 08/05/2023 09:30

OP I hope your day goes quickly and your family have tea on the table for you when you get home.
