Bank holiday rage

If one more person says to me ‘yeah but you’ll get an extra day off’ about working today I am going to lose my shit.

Family group chat have said it over the weekend (they all have office jobs) and then even my DH has said it this morning!

Yes I’ve worked every day this BH weekend. No that doesn’t mean I’ll get an extra day off for the extra BH. That’s not how it works.

I wasn’t resentful about it but I am starting to be with everyone around me telling me how great it is that we ‘all’ get an extra days holiday. And I think many of them are in for a disappointment when they notice that they haven’t got an extra day either, it’ll just come off their annual leave entitlement.

most people get an extra day off this weekend. other people get an extra day off another time. it's not rocket science is it. Just be happy about getting another day off at some point, even if it's not today.

🙈

Educate them then don't have a go at them

There is a thread full of education which that poster has not paid any attention to whatsoever

All they need to do is go on the government website - it's all there in black and white.

It's been linked to multiple times on this thread and explained multiple times as well.

Yes, and some people like OP just have the same amount of annual leave as they do every other year, with no option to take today off as a bank holiday or take another day in lieu.

Exactly!

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 08/05/2023 10:21

So if the Government had wanted to ensure everyone benefited from the extra BH, they should have stated for this year only, FT employees legal minimum is 29 days?

Yes, pretty much. But that hasn't happened as bank holidays have always been at the employers discretion and are nothing to do with statutory leave.

Skybluepinky · 08/05/2023 10:24

Book an appointment with yr GP.

Have l understood it correctly....

So if the Government had wanted to ensure everyone benefited from the extra BH, they should have stated for this year only, FT employees legal minimum is 29 days?

In a nut shell, yes.

LoonyLois · 08/05/2023 10:27

I’m self employed and work three days a week. Monday is one of my days so it just means I’m having to work another day. Try getting people to get their head around that one! They just can’t

TheMoops · 08/05/2023 10:27

Lots of people will just get an extra day..... pretty much everyone I know has been given today off no questions asked.

However, some people do find different working patterns hard to understand. I had to work on Saturday and my step mum didn't believe me and just thought I was trying to get out of going to her coronation party. 🤷🏼‍♀️

TillyTollyTully · 08/05/2023 10:30

Almost all people classed as workers are legally entitled to 5.6 weeks’ paid holiday a year (known as statutory leave entitlement or annual leave). An employer can include bank holidays as part of statutory annual leave.Bank or public holidays do not have to be given as paid leave. An employer can choose to include bank holidays as part of a worker’s statutory annual leave

People need to read the above on Gov.uk.

You have to get 28 days paid holiday (full time) as a minimum.

So employment contracts might show:
28 days holiday, including Bank Holidays.
20 days plus 8 Bank Holiday days.
20 days plus Bank Holidays.

If your contract reads as one of the first two, NO, you do not get an 'extra day' this year. If its the third, yes you will.

ejbaxa · 08/05/2023 10:31

Yes loads of people are just getting a free extra day.

But...op if this makes you feel better: my dh has an office job but is working all day from home today to catch up because he always has tonnes of work. Me and my dd are doing work for her GCSEs together. My ds is having a driving lesson - his instructor is working all day for extra money. After that he will be revising and consolidating work all day.

Although there are a lot of people getting a free day, there are a great many of us not sitting on our arses doing nothing.

Xenia · 08/05/2023 10:32

I get zero paid holiday as have been self employed since 1994. Instead I work half the year at least just to pay income tax and a good part of the rest of the year to pay indirect taxes..... working today of course as ever.

Yeah i meant OP in real life really but I am shocked at how many people assume their contracts apply to everyone else!

Changes17 · 08/05/2023 10:36

I'm self-employed and working (having taken a day off for last week's bank holiday). Sadly there doesn't seem to be any funding for the extra day off.

God give me the absolute confidence of a MN poster who knows nothing about how holidays work posting on a thread where OP is complaining about people who don't know how holidays work.

Yep this thread is peak MN - it should go into MN classics.

Part timers will have hours added and need to book off the bank holiday, but they are given extra hours for the extra bank holiday. People who work on Mondays often need to use some AL to account for all the bank holidays but part timers who don’t work Monday end up with the extra hours to use at other times. Full timers don’t need to do anything, certainly doesn’t come off AL

That's incorrect.

Full time employees are entitled to 28 days annual leave. As long as they receive that amount off, it's perfectly legal for an employer not to give them extra time for additional bank holidays.

The same applies for part-time workers. As long as they get the statutory minimum, they aren't (by law) entitled to extra days for extra bank holidays - that's only the case if their contract says "x amount of annual leave plus all bank holidays".

That’s how it works in my organisation. Part timers should be entitled to their share of bank holidays. If companies choose not to do that I’d be looking for a new job

Pipsquiggle · 08/05/2023 11:02

All the contracts I have ever had, in an industry that works on bank holidays - I get x days annual leave + bank holidays.

If my work days fall on a bank holiday I take it off at another time.

This is standard practice. You need to look at your contact and if they are doing that, look elsewhere

It's not standard practise in the slightest.

MrsTulip · 08/05/2023 11:08

I do get the extra day of paid but to be honest I would rather be in work. I'm board senseless at home and although there's stuff I need to be planning and organising I can't do it because it's a bank holiday and no one is around to answer emails or phone callls

EveryWitchWaybutLoose · 08/05/2023 11:08

YANBU

I'm working today (in between Mumsnetting) because I have the sort of job where a "day off" doesn't actually reduce my workload. Actually it does the reverse.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 08/05/2023 11:09

Great, but what your organisation does is not the law so it's totally irrelevant to what OP's company does, lol.

If companies choose not to do that I’d be looking for a new job

Again, totally irrelevant to OP's situation. What her employer is doing is perfectly legal.

And it's still going on 🙈

shivawn · 08/05/2023 11:20

I love that I get to take my bank holidays days with my annual leave whenever I want rather than on whatever day the bank holiday falls on.

If I really wanted a bank holiday off then I'd just book it off in advance. The only days we can't book in advance are Christmas and New Years, we have to do every second year but that's okay, they can't shut down the hospital for the holidays and taking turns keeps things fair.
