Dog attack: American Bulleys AGAIN (trigger warning)

CrossBun · 29/03/2023 21:09

(Frequent name changer, not trying to be controversial)

6 year old mauled to unconsciousness in Manchester by a pack of 5 dogs reportedly American Bully’s. Although they’re still investigating.

How many more times? How long is this going to go on for before someone does something? It seems like absolute insanity. I struggle to make sense of this as in how we can tolerate this as a civilised society. It’s so preventable.

Girl, 6, mauled by pack of dogs while playing as brave pedestrians fought them

The girl is understood to be in a stable condition

What do you think should happen?

Comii9 · 29/03/2023 21:25

I think something should happen. It's all too often this is happening there was another case case that's floating on Ticktock and it was a baby.

Very sad. Warnings need to be put out about having those types of dogs with kids for a start.

TomHanksIsFuckingAmazing · 29/03/2023 21:28

These fucking things need to be BANNED. A dog should be a companion not a weapon!

begoneday · 29/03/2023 21:32

XenoBitch · 29/03/2023 21:20

What do you think should happen?

I think it’s fairly bloody obvious to anyone capable of critical thinking. If one breed of dog is responsible for most of the fatal or near fatal dog attacks in the UK, that breed needs to be banned. Emotions don’t need to come into it. It’s just counting.

Bookshipper · 29/03/2023 21:33

Yep ban them.

Fathobbit · 29/03/2023 21:34

Muzzles on all dogs in public. That’s what I’d do.

These dogs are not a breed though.. they are a mix.
How well has breed specific bans gone in the past?

I am capable of critical thinking (to a point, I am not the brightest but there is also no need to insult my intelligence). This is MN after all, where I expected the answer to actually be to ban all dogs.

FrictionDiction · 29/03/2023 21:36

I think a ban would be less effective than a public information campaign.

Too many believe the "it's how you raise them" bollocks and these things will keep happening until the danger is recognised.

EmmaEmerald · 29/03/2023 21:37

Ban, muzzle, campaigns. All good ideas.

Parsley1234 · 29/03/2023 21:43

The problem is the demographic that have them breed them buy them these are not the types to adhere to laws so regardless of what laws are put in place they’re not going to be adhered to so what is the point ? The dogs that are bred everyone in that area knows who breeds them they are back yard breeders bred for money status protection what is going to change ? There’s not enough police so nothing will change.

Saz12 · 29/03/2023 21:44

Can I ask, as a non-dog person, why muzzles are so abhorred? Obviously they need to be loose enough to allow doggy behaviour. But given that dogs are shot for worrying livestock, its illegal to hunt with dogs, shoots are on private land, etc etc - why arent dogs routinely muzzled in public places?

The little girl who has serious facial injuries? If so, I’ve been following the story and it’s heartbreaking. I don’t think it’s the same dog breed though. It was one dog that apparently ‘turned’.

There was a really good comment from a dog behaviourist about this on another thread. Given the amount of dog threads on MN, it would be impossible to find... but some of the main points were that muzzles can give a false sense of security, it is hard for dogs to properly read the body language of other dogs, your car is also classed as a public place (so your dog would have to be muzzled there too).

Northernsouloldies · 29/03/2023 21:49

They are the new status dog for the hard of thinking. I don't have the answers but these dogs are more powerful than previous status breeds. We have all seen the fuckers that assume the hard man persona because of the dog they have on the end of a lead. Pathetic beyond belief.

The dogs escaped from their home. A law stipulating muzzling dogs in public wouldn’t have prevented this.

The owner was a (likely backyard) breeder keeping multiple dogs in a caravan. He’s unlikely to be the sort of person who would adhere to a muzzle law anyway.

The owners of these dogs that are involved in maulings and fatalities are unlikely to be the sort of person to adhere to muzzle laws. So you are just punishing responsible dog owners.

Mummyof287 · 29/03/2023 21:50

Should be a law that certain dangerous breeds of dogs are not allowed in houses with children, but sadly will never happen....just like smoking or guns.

Children's welfare is not important to our government :(

Spkat · 29/03/2023 21:51

There was one at puppy class. By four months the owner didn't gave any control of it and it was already very deep chested. They weren't giving it a chance.

It's difficult to muzzle some flat faced dogs, I have a tiny shit zhu. It would be a massive overkill to muzzle him and he couldn't kill a mouse let alone a child. I would comply with a law though and I'd do my best to fit a muzzle.

Could the answer lie in making it law that every dog has to be fully registered and insured. I would imagine the insurance payments for an XL bully would be prohibitively expensive and might make people think twice about owning one.

Heavy fines for those found uninsured.

Withnailandeye · 29/03/2023 21:54

Bull breeds should be banned, they’re not suitable for the general public.

as a person who has owned dogs responsibly their entire adult life, I worry for the future of dogs when we have so many irresponsible owners. Dog ownership should be what gun ownership is in the UK.

Fatkittythinkitty · 29/03/2023 21:56

"This is MN after all, where I expected the answer to actually be to ban all dogs."

I don't understand when people post this type of stuff. There are loads of dog owners on here - the dog house threads are regularly in active. Which is understandable as there are loads of dog owners in the general population.

I actually think the sheer number of dogs and dog owners is part of the problem. It's only a small minority of dog owners who are irresponsible but that minority is significant now with such large numbers of dogs around.

I don't think we need any new laws or dogs banning personally, we need the current laws to be enforced and proper penalties and consequences for people who aren't following them.

3rd party insurance is cheap. You can get it for £25 a year (half if you are over 60) with the Dogs Trust. It is the same for all breeds of dogs too.

wurtle · 29/03/2023 21:58

It always is a bully xl or something similar. Not a Labrador. I can't stand these bullies. They should ban them.

beachruns · 29/03/2023 21:58

I’ve always owned dogs and currently have greyhounds who are happy and easy to be muzzled but a PP was right in that it changes the body language. Mine are never off lead either.

the types of people that own XL bully dogs have them off lead and unregistered so it wouldn’t work. what I mean is that the attacks happen when they aren’t under control on a lead.

im a runner and went past one the other day. Off lead doing nothing more than sniffing around but I was fucking terrified. I slowed to a walk, gave no eye contact and as much space as possible. I can’t believe how frightened I was

LuvSmallDogs · 29/03/2023 21:59

Kid's lucky to be alive, just one could've killed her!

I fucking hate these things, I've decided not to use the local dog park anymore because it's constantly teeming with intact male bullies - last time I was there, one even had a suspiciously pitbull face. It's joined on to a kid's playground as well, something's going to go seriously tits up there in the near future!
