So Camilla is Queen now?

Headlines in the papers talking about what the Queen said yesterday at a reception.

I thought we had a King and a Queen Consort.

Phillip wasn't a King.

AIBU to think calling Camilla the Queen instead of the Queen Consort is going too far?

Any examples of this? I’ve only ever seen her referred to as Queen Consort

Crumpetdisappointment · 24/02/2023 07:12

i am sure you wont be the only one to huff about this.
but i think yabu

PortiasBiscuit · 24/02/2023 07:12

who cares?

Banchory · 24/02/2023 07:12

If we’re going to have a monarchy I think she should be Queen.
Shes the King’s wife, therefore the Queen.
Queen consort is an unnecessary mouthful.

MidgeHardcastle · 24/02/2023 07:13

King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra
King George V and Queen Mary
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth

DrMarciaFieldstone · 24/02/2023 07:13

The ‘consort’ part was always going to be dropped quickly in conversation.

No issues here

octoberafternoons · 24/02/2023 07:14

A male consort isn't King because they would outrank the Queen.

Queen Mother was Queen though and it was always expected Camilla would be referred to as Queen after some time had passed since Queen Elizabeth's death.

PersonaNonGarter · 24/02/2023 07:14

Don’t get upset. Queen Consort is a bit of a mouthful.

‘Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh’ was a mouthful too so he was usually known by one part or the other.

Clymene · 24/02/2023 07:14

Too far for what?

banjaxxed · 24/02/2023 07:14

Well, that's how the Royal Family works and always has

King is higher up than Queen so no, PP was not King

Camilla is the Queen Consort but she will still be Queen Camilla

Just like the Queen Mother was Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Consort)

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 24/02/2023 07:15

It's an outdated and wholly unnecessary institution. What any of them are called is irrelevant.

BooCrew · 24/02/2023 07:15

Meh. She's the King's wife, so she's the Queen. What does it matter?

My poor old middle-aged grey matter can't seem to update itself, I suspect he'll be 'Prince Charles, I mean the King' until I die 😂

SnarkyBag · 24/02/2023 07:16

It’s fine who cares

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 24/02/2023 07:16

What difference does it make to your life?

R0ckets · 24/02/2023 07:17

That's what was always going to happen I don't understand why anyone would feign surprise?

The title of King outranks Queen which is why Phillip was never referred to as King but historically it has been the norm for Queen consorts to be referred to as Queen.

I don't see why it would come as a shock to anyone.

StatisticallyChallenged · 24/02/2023 07:17

Most queen consorts are just referred to as Queen X - Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth (the queen mother), Queen Alexandra. It's normal. I think they were using queen consort to make it clear they were talking about Camilla rather than QEII

Philip wasn't king because male consorts aren't King - King outranks Queen so male consorts don't have that title. Hence Prince Philip and Prince Albert.

Same here. Can't get used to it so he can stay as Prince Charles in my head.

God who actually cares....

yabu.
She is not being called The Queen, just Queen. There’s a difference. Like Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother or Queen Mary.

Queen as a title is not the same as The Queen.

Onefootinthegroove · 24/02/2023 07:18

Yes, that's how Monarchy works.

Me too. He's been Prince Charles all of my life - over 53 years 🤣🤣 so my brain hasn't updated to the new King yet!

AuntieEntity · 24/02/2023 07:19

The country is going to Hell in a handcart, and you're concerned about the title of a woman you'll likely never meet and who probably gives zero shits about your opinion. YABU.

WeWereInParis · 24/02/2023 07:20

Phillip wasn't a King.

That's not how it works. The Queen Mother was just called Queen Elizabeth. Husbands of Queens (who inherit the title) are not kings. Wives of Kings (who inherit the title) are queens.

AIBU to think calling Camilla the Queen instead of the Queen Consort is going too far?

Too far for what? It's her title.

knittingaddict · 24/02/2023 07:20

Camilla is married to the King. I'm not at all bothered that she will be called Queen, rather than Queen Consort. Calling her Queen Consort all the time has a whiff of public punishment to me, so I'm happy to see it dropped.
