So Camilla is Queen now?

Headlines in the papers talking about what the Queen said yesterday at a reception.

I thought we had a King and a Queen Consort.

Phillip wasn't a King.

AIBU to think calling Camilla the Queen instead of the Queen Consort is going too far?

yabu.
She is not being called The Queen, just Queen. There’s a difference. Like Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother or Queen Mary.

Queen as a title is not the same as The Queen.

I'd never heard that Queen X is different to the Queen. Interesting. Thanks @ChannelyourinnerElsa

TangledWebOfDeception · 24/02/2023 09:03

I'm sure pp have said, but yes, she is Queen.

Prince Philip wasn't King because then he would have outranked the Queen.

Xol · 24/02/2023 09:05

Did you think it was going too far when George VI's wife was called the Queen? Or George V's? Or Edwardl VII's? After all, Prince Albert wasn't called the King.

Me too. He's been Prince Charles all of my life - over 53 years 🤣🤣 so my brain hasn't updated to the new King yet!

Described him as 'Prince Charles who's the king now' to my toddler DD the other day so I'm sure that was all very clear for her.

BooCrew · 24/02/2023 07:15

Meh. She's the King's wife, so she's the Queen. What does it matter?

My poor old middle-aged grey matter can't seem to update itself, I suspect he'll be 'Prince Charles, I mean the King' until I die 😂

@BooCrew, me too lol

Figgygal · 24/02/2023 09:10

She is the queen all but in name
Consort is just being used to calm the frothing cult of diana worshippers
Why the hell does it matter? I wish they'd just drop consort to be honest and get on with it

Any examples of this? I’ve only ever seen her referred to as Queen Consort

When the formal proclamation was made in front of the Privy Council the day after the King's accession, she was referred to simply as the Queen.

There's very little that's as formal and precise as that.

I expect the "consort" bit will be quietly dropped after the coronation, and like all queens consort from history, she'll simply be the Queen

Groutyonehereagain · 24/02/2023 09:10

The only thing that bothers me, is that King out ranks Queen. It’s time that shit was changed.

Smile

Try running the "Camilla is queen Camilla now because she's married to the king" past her.
I bet she'll pick it up a lot more quickly than some adults have managed.

Allthismidnighttalking · 24/02/2023 09:21

I must admit I thought - the Queen? For about a nanosecond, does feel a bit odd after all those decades of The Queen 👑

ringofrosies · 24/02/2023 09:23

My immediate thought when I seen the OP was “here’s a Diana acolyte”. Camilla is wife to the King so therefore is Queen (Consort not Regnant for the pedantic among us). On another note, I like her, think she seems quite down to earth for someone in her position.

Same here. Can't get used to it so he can stay as Prince Charles in my head.

Me too

Why? The way it works is that the husband of a regnant queen can’t be king. Why would you want to change something so inadvertently feminist?

Standbyguest · 24/02/2023 09:25

Who cares?! It's meanness twaddle anyway

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/02/2023 09:26

All Queens who are Queen by virtue of being married to the King are Queen Consort. It’s just not usually used aloud. Queen Mother was a Queen Consort.

King is seen as ranking higher than Queen so Philip couldn’t be this - husbands of queens are always Prince, eg Prince Albert (snigger).

DesertRose64 · 24/02/2023 09:26

Quite honestly though - I don’t really think of them as King and Queen and I look forward to the day it’s William and Kate.

Well unless something awful happens to both William and George, I don't think it's likely we'll see a Queen regnant for another 70-80 years (and that's assuming either George's firstborn is a girl or he has no children) and I don't think they'll revise titles before there's likely need

What bothers me is that we have a monarchy but there we are!

This is very ‘Oh if only Diana were here’.

If Diana were still here she'd be on her third or fourth marriage with a face full of plastic surgery.

Sceptic1234 · 24/02/2023 09:30

Don't care.

How often was Prince Philip referred to as "Prince Consort Philip" which is what he was.

FeinCuroxiVooz · 24/02/2023 09:31

it's totally normal for the "consort" to be dropped. it would only be necessary if needing to distinguish between her and any other nearby queens. we used to have "Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother" which set me wondering what Camilla's title will be when Charles is dead and William is king, with Queen Katherine. Is "Dowager Queen" a thing?

Changingnametime · 24/02/2023 09:31

Of course she is Queen. She’s married to the King and is therefore Queen.

Onnabugeisha · 24/02/2023 09:32

She is Queen. Yes a Queen consort instead of regnant.

The only reason why Phillip was not King was sexism. It’s the sexist belief that you can’t have a King consort, that a King is always regnant.

Blossomtoes · 24/02/2023 09:24

That’s not feminist. The reason the husband of a regnant queen cannot be King is due to the sexist belief that a King is always regnant. While women (queens) can be mere consorts of a ruler, men (kings) cannot be mere consorts.

MaidOfSteel · 24/02/2023 09:37

It can hardly come as a surprise, surely? In everyday chat she was always going to be called The Queen or Queen Camilla.
