No high viz clothing
No lights
Cycling cross lane
Car driver in lane does not chnge direction
Lights on
Cyclist comes across his lane
Cyclist does not give enough clearance
Back wheel hits car.

True interpretation : Cyclist hits car NOT car hits cyclist

Driver of car plastered across media for doing nothing wrong

I am all for cycling and sharing the roads with car users, but a cycle lane goes under that round about where he was hit. Why he wasn’t using that I do not know!

Noodlewave · 22/02/2023 10:26

No high viz clothing - no requirement for people to wear high viz clothing while cycling. Should everyone be wearing high viz at all times?

No lights - appears to be daylight, no need for lights. Any more victim blaming?

Cycling cross lane - no idea what this means

Car driver in lane does not chnge direction - well if you are about to rear end another vehicle, you should be either slowing down, accelerating or changing direction!

Lights on - who, the car? so what?

Cyclist comes across his lane - cyclist remains in his lane, cyclist is unable to move to the outside lane due to another vehicle already undertaking him.

Cyclist does not give enough clearance - cyclist doesn't scamper out of the way as nowhere to go due to vehicle undertaking him.

Back wheel hits car - car drives in to the back of the cyclist

True interpretation : Cyclist hits car NOT car hits cyclist
True interpretation: Front of car hits rear of bicycle, i.e. car rear ends cyclist

Driver of car plastered across media for doing nothing wrong - apart from rear ending a cyclist.

I for one look forward to a calm and reasonable debate about cycling.

Spacemountain · 22/02/2023 10:29

We must have watched different footage. The car changed lanes and hit him from behind. He is not at fault, the car is at fault for moving into a lane that was not free.

You'll never get that on MN.

ComtesseDeSpair · 22/02/2023 10:33

If you can’t see an adult human riding a bicycle in daylight unless they’re wearing hi vis gear and have lights on then you have no business driving a car on the roads because you’re a dangerously inattentive driver. The driver clearly manoeuvred without checking their mirrors properly.

xogossipgirlxo · 22/02/2023 10:34

Driver couldn't see him without any lights, hi-vis etc., but to be honest some drivers check mirrors only for half a second and they think it's enough to safely change lanes, which is bullshit as we can see.

hattie43 · 22/02/2023 10:34

Saw the footage and totally his fault . What a tool taking a selfie in the ambulance .entitled or what .

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 22/02/2023 10:39

Ok, I have now seen the footage. I assume you don't drive OP?

ChristmasKraken · 22/02/2023 10:39

I've just watched the footage and I don't know what you're talking about. He stays in the same lane the whole time, the car pulls across in to his lane and clips the back wheel of his bike. Totally the car's fault!

Plumbear2 · 22/02/2023 10:41

I think you watched different footage. It was completely the drivers fault.

😂
I'm still amazed how rabid people become when it comes to discussing cycling.
It's not just mumsnet.

openingbat · 22/02/2023 10:43

The driver clearly changes lanes and clips the bike, so I'm not sure what you're on about OP.

Just watched the footage as well and exactly this! What on earth did you watch OP? I can't see how that is the cyclist's fault at all

HamFrancisco · 22/02/2023 10:44

The car pulls into the lane that DW is cycling in and doesn't leave a big enough gap so side swipes his back wheel.

Do you drive, OP?

Lonelycrab · 22/02/2023 10:44

Yes it’s clearly the car that’s to blame. Of course if you read the DM you’ll automatically assume it’s the cyclists fault.

He’s in the primary position in his lane and is there for a few seconds before the car cuts in across him, into the lane he’s occupying and collides with his back end. How the driver didn’t see him is anyone’s guess, another idiot on 4 wheels not paying attention. He’s not switching lanes at the time of the impact- the car is.

Youpillock · 22/02/2023 10:44

The car changes lane and the cyclist stays within the same lane but moves from one side of the lane to the other.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 22/02/2023 10:45

Op what were you watching? I don't drive or cycle and even I can see that the driver hit him!

Lonelycrab · 22/02/2023 10:51

Here’s the video op. Maybe watch it after you’ve been to specsavers.

Sun link

xILikeJamx · 22/02/2023 10:54

Maybe time to hand in your licence OP (if you miraculously managed to pass in the first place)

The bike stays in the same lane. The car changes lanes without even indicating and hits the bike

VioletaDelValle · 22/02/2023 11:07

The video on the DM has been edited to make it look like it's the cyclists fault. If you watch the full video on the Sun website then you can clearly see the car move lanes.

SinnerBoy · 22/02/2023 11:20

Cycling cross lane Cycling in the middle of his lane, perfectly legal.

Car driver in lane does not chnge direction Car comes up from behind and changes into the lane to his left, without indicating.

Cyclist comes across his lane See point one, he's in the middle of his lane and the car approacjhes him from behind.

Cyclist does not give enough clearance Cyclist is cycling perfectly legally, in the middle of his lane, car moves left, from behind.

Back wheel hits car. Car hits back wheel of bicycle, propelling him forward and leftwards.

Have you watched the video? Everything you have posted is 100% unadulterated bollocks. I hope you don't drive a car.

SinnerBoy · 22/02/2023 11:21

VioletaDelValle · Today 11:07

The video on the DM has been edited to make it look like it's the cyclists fault.

I saw it on the Mail site and it was clear that the car changes lanes! Have they changed it now?

QuirkyUsername · 22/02/2023 11:22

Christ, I know that roundabout and hate driving it in a car, let alone on a bike.
But clearly the car crosses lanes and drives straight into him. Car's fault 🤷

Frabbits · 22/02/2023 11:24

The driver was 100% completely and utterly at fault.

If OP thinks overwise maybe best to return your licence.
