No high viz clothing
No lights
Cycling cross lane
Car driver in lane does not chnge direction
Lights on
Cyclist comes across his lane
Cyclist does not give enough clearance
Back wheel hits car.

True interpretation : Cyclist hits car NOT car hits cyclist

Driver of car plastered across media for doing nothing wrong

Should we ban black cars then too?

You wouldn't expect to see a cyclist on that roundabout as there is a cycle lane that goes under it.

The one thing you should expect to see on the road is other road users, like cyclists.
Cycle lanes are optional, and usually badly maintained and laid out, that's why many cyclists use their right to be on the road.

I never said it wasn't ' their right' as you so boldly put it. It's a choice, in this case a bad one.
The cycle lane underneath is great.... down on a wide ramp to give you momentum to get up the other side.
It's not a good choice to use the roundabout in this instance.
It's a daft one.

Dahlia444 · 22/02/2023 12:37

No idea what footage OP was watching. Car clearly drives across lane into back/side of DW hike. Poor man.
I have worn hi viz (jacket and helmet), different colours (currently orange) in daylight and night for years and the number of near misses I have every week is terrifying. Frankly I don't know how I'm still alive. But I have very few other transport options, and while I'm alive it keeps me fit.
So many drivers (I'm also a car driver) are oblivious, careless, thoughtless, unobservant and reckless. Please for the sake of not destroying a family be more careful and put away the cycle hating as well.
'I didn't see you' is the constant cry. Well look more.

Mojoyoyo · 22/02/2023 12:38

Recent new laws regarding cyclists and cars.

The car driver has a duty of care to ensure safety of pedestrians and cyclists as the car is a potential killing machine.

Driver has undergone hazard perception training during driver training and driving test to allow for error on part of pedestrians and cyclists.

Drivers are now supposed to give way to cyclists on roundabouts.

Car driver at fault.
Too many cyclist haters around. They forget that cyclists are also drivers.
Cyclist haters are also vulnerable pedestrians.

Mojoyoyo · 22/02/2023 12:47

Regarding HI Viz
Shouldn't have to wear high viz if people look where they’re going.

My brother was knocked off his bike by a car driver who claimed “I didn’t see him” even though he had a brighter than bright fluorescent yellow hi viz jacket on.

Law change with higher penalties for drivers who knock over cyclists and pedestrians needed rather than the slap on the wrist at present.

Should we ban black cars then too?

Cars have a significant amount of lights and reflectors on them which make them visible. But there is a reality that some colours of cars are easier to see than others, particularly in low light conditions.

loveisanopensore · 22/02/2023 13:01

I have lights, reflectors and high viz on my bike. Doesn't seem to make a difference.

My kids scooter wheels light up, their bag and jackets have reflective patches. Cars still break the lights.

None of this stuff us worth a damn if the driver is looking at screens.

We're pushing all the responsibility onto the most vulnerable.

maddiemookins16mum · 22/02/2023 13:09

He’s almost as annoying as Jeremy Vine.

😂
I'm still amazed how rabid people become when it comes to discussing cycling.
It's not just mumsnet.

I’m always amazed too. I don’t get it. Cars, lorries, vans, buses, bikes, horses you name it, they’re all using the road and are legally allowed to do that. Cycle hating is a relatively new thing that defies explanation.

MiniCooperLover · 22/02/2023 13:24

The only criticism I have of Dan Walker from that footage is, yes it's a bit dark at that point so high vis and lights would have helped, but he followed the shape of the lane he was in, the car was 100% at fault.

Theopossumwasmeantforme · 22/02/2023 13:59

Obviously the car is at fault, but I've never seen a cyclist attempt any of the 3(?) big roundabouts round there (presumably because of the underpasses), with the exception of just turning left on to Ecclesall Rd at about 7am when it's dead. They're horrible roundabouts with some awful drivers. Hopefully this stops people attempting it.

ivykaty44 · 22/02/2023 14:28

people should stop doing something when other behave dangerously in that area, best to avoid area as they'll get hurt - that is your answer

id rather the dangerous behaviour was tackled, surely thats the answer in a civilised society

ivykaty44 · 22/02/2023 14:29

maddiemookins16mum. no where as annoying as you?

Theopossumwasmeantforme · 22/02/2023 14:40

@ivykaty44 well yeah personally I would rather people take less risky options than make themselves more vulnerable. Do you also know the area? I don't drive if that makes you feel better.

SabbatWheel these two riders were wearing hi viz, it doesn't work in daylight

@lookluv
No high viz clothing - high viz doesn't work in daylight
No lights - no lights needed in daylight, lights are mandatory at night/darkness
Cycling cross lane - the cyclist stays in their lane which is following the curve of the round about
Car driver in lane does not chnge direction - yes they do, the cross the lane, the cyclists follows the lane going around the roundabout - where as the driver moves to their left
Lights on no lights are needed during daylight hours
Cyclist comes across his lane - no the cyclist follows the lane going around the roundabout
Cyclist does not give enough clearance - the cyclist is in their own lane the driver moves into the lane the cyclist is riding in
Back wheel hits car

ivykaty44 · 22/02/2023 14:43

Theopossumwasmeantforme I would rather we tackle the risk, if we keep ignoring the risk and tackling the victims nothing will change

I am always patient, leave enough room and only overtake if it's safe etc but let's be honest it's fucking annoying being stuck behind cyclists. Lots of country lanes around here where there aren't any safe places to overtake really, it's irritating spending miles going ridiculously slow. Yes everyone has a right to the road, most other forms of transport maintain a reasonable speed, sans horses of course but don't see many.

So yes treat them with respect and act safely but doesn't stop inwardly bubbling away with annoyance. Especially when there are pull ins and they never use them, I used to cycle a lot and would periodically.

LlynTegid · 22/02/2023 14:49

At least 25% of car drivers should not have a licence. Some for medical reasons, some because of addictions and/or use of illegal drugs, many (majority of which I suspect will be men) because of previous conduct on the road.

I'd be surprised if judged by similar standards more than 2 to 3% of cyclist are unfit to use their bicycle.

Sirzy · 22/02/2023 14:50

I am not a cyclist and I am a car driver. Can’t see how that is anything but the fault of the car driver. He should have seen the cyclist and not crossed lanes

Allfurcoatandnoknickers · 22/02/2023 15:01

I live near this roundabout - really mystified why he didn't use the underpass as it's a horrible roundabout to drive around let alone cycle round....I've had a number of near misses from people who get way too close to you in the car.

jcyclops · 22/02/2023 15:02

SummerBaby23 · 22/02/2023 10:12

I am all for cycling and sharing the roads with car users, but a cycle lane goes under that round about where he was hit. Why he wasn’t using that I do not know!

A couple of photos of the location.

The first shows the approach from the direction DW used. Note the cycle lane telling cyclists to turn left and use the subway. The blue sign says "All cyclists".

The second is from the middle of the roundabout. DW would have taken the right hand exit to go towards the railway station. Amazingly there are cyclists using both passages in the photo (and they are both wearing hi-viz gear) - showing how it should be done.

Car driver at fault for the crash, but DW an idiot for not being a sensible cyclist and using the subway and hi-viz gear.

I don’t find it annoying although I recognise that others do. Keeping it bubbling inside is one thing, but far too many drivers don’t and seem to think that car is king so they must not be held up under any circumstances.
We live in Tour de Yorkshire country and weekends see thousands of folk out cycling the lanes and trying the stages. It’s really not a problem ( we are not a cycling household btw, DH has a MUCH more outing hobby 🤣).

Magentax · 22/02/2023 15:08

I don't understand how anyone could watch the footage and think the car driver did nothing wrong - they change lanes into DW's lane and then go into him from behind.

ShakinSteven · 22/02/2023 15:11

If you watch this and think this is not the driver's fault then you shouldn't be driving. The cyclist did nothing wrong.
