No high viz clothing
No lights
Cycling cross lane
Car driver in lane does not chnge direction
Lights on
Cyclist comes across his lane
Cyclist does not give enough clearance
Back wheel hits car.

True interpretation : Cyclist hits car NOT car hits cyclist

Driver of car plastered across media for doing nothing wrong

@Skodacool what did you watch? DW stayed perfectly in his lane going around the roundabout, the car changed lanes without looking and clipped him.
This is why cyclists are fucked. People are so adamant that they behave recklessly that even actual video footage of doing thing's exactly right and being hit by a car will not convince them that the cyclist wasn't somehow responsible.

SamanthaCaine · 27/02/2023 10:44

How the hell is the poll virtually 50/50 🤦

There are about 175 shit drivers on MN who seem to think the driver did nothing wrong. Bloody scary.

TeresaCrowd · 27/02/2023 10:58

Replace driver with man, cyclist with woman and helmet and hi-viz with modest clothing on a night out and I think you'll see a very different opinion on whether the victim should alter their behaviour under dubious grounds of safety or whether we should instead target the poor behaviour of the perpetrator. Proves the level of bias against cyclists from those who don't cycle here (most cyclists also drive remember...).

PPE should be the last thing to consider. FWIW I cycle a lot, and I almost always wear a helmet because it's habit (occasional rental bike trips are the outlier) but I respect others choice not to and I wouldn't lecture them on it.

Thank you for this excellent explanation.

@Xol I just watched the video and the general lighting is low so it isn't easy to see him.

I still think that the driver is in the wrong.

BankOfDave · 27/02/2023 21:07

If you look at it frame by frame, Dan was in front of the car that hit him as they both came round the bend and for at least 5 metres before the collision. I don’t for a second buy he was in his blind spot as the driver should have seen him even before changing lanes.

Driver of car plastered across media for doing nothing wrong

No high viz clothing - it's day light in the morning

No lights - there is a light in the front of the bike

Cycling cross lane - cyclist remains in same lane, albeit is to one side at some points but still within the lane marking

Car driver in lane does not chnge direction - car does appear to change lane and appears to drive over the markings on his left when doing so

Lights on - car has lights on

Cyclist comes across his lane - as above, cyclist remains within the white lane markings going round the roundabout

Cyclist does not give enough clearance - cyclist isn't crossing the lane markings and is ahead of the car throughout

Back wheel hits car - car hits the cyclist on the side, towards the back half of the bike

True interpretation : car hits cyclist

The lane the car is in merges to the left like a spiral in order to use 3rd exit.
You wouldn't expect to see a cyclist on that roundabout as there is a cycle lane that goes under it.
I can see why the car driver must have glanced in their left wing mirror and not seen him as Dan moves left to right within his lane.
Still the driver is at fault though but I drive that roundabout frequently and cyclists just don't use it.
So I can see why it happened but god knows why he didn't use the ramp and lane underneath.

Road users should always expect to see a range of vehicle types in city roads, even if roundabouts. They should remain vigilant at all times.

The cycle path under it is full of rubbish, glass etc and not ideal for anyone including cycles

Whilst the car was def at fault, absolutely no dispute about that, Dan really doesn’t help himself here. Dressed in black, makes it very difficult to see him.

I ride a black horse and ALWAYS have hi viz on me and front/back of my horse for this very reason.

Which horse and rider do you see here? If Dan had hi viz on, he might have been seen sooner.

That is a photograph taken at night in the dark.
The cyclist was driving during the morning and, as can be seen, is clearly visible.

I don’t know if you’re aware, but we do have daylight in London. If someone is hard to see in daylight on a clear day with very good visibility it is likely time to visit the optician.

You can't really tell much about the lighting from dash cam footage. There is just no reason to believe that the driver couldn't see the bike if they had been looking where they were going. If you struggle that much to see, how are you going to cope with pedestrians and other dark coloured vehicles?

SamanthaCaine · 28/02/2023 09:36

The dashcam footage is misleading. You can tell this from the brightness of the headlights of all the cars. Whoever owns that camera needs to adjust the settings.

It's possible that DW was lost and obscured by the A pillar at the time of impact. However this is no excuse as the driver should've seen the cyclist from multiple angles when entering the roundabout.

The driver is 100% at fault here for a lack of observation and careless driving.

It's ridiculous that people buy SUV's for their high driving position but it's pretty useless if you don't take advantage of it.

SinnerBoy · 28/02/2023 09:52

On checking mirrors, I never use mine to see other road users ahead of me. In my car and bikes, the mirrors face backwards and I use them to see what's behind and alongside.

KarmaStar · 28/02/2023 13:18

Are you the driver op?😹

SinnerBoy · 28/02/2023 13:53

That's a bit harsh, she's his mammy!
