No high viz clothing
No lights
Cycling cross lane
Car driver in lane does not chnge direction
Lights on
Cyclist comes across his lane
Cyclist does not give enough clearance
Back wheel hits car.

True interpretation : Cyclist hits car NOT car hits cyclist

Driver of car plastered across media for doing nothing wrong

FWIW I run day time lights and although I don't wear purpose made high Vis I tend to wear bright colours mostly. Still been hit by cars. You can wear whatever you want and some dickhead undertakes the van behind you on an approach to a roundabout and you're getting run over.

Any incident where you hit someone, short of them throwing themselves in your immediate path, is because you weren't being observant enough.

The lane the car is in merges to the left like a spiral in order to use 3rd exit.
You wouldn't expect to see a cyclist on that roundabout as there is a cycle lane that goes under it.
I can see why the car driver must have glanced in their left wing mirror and not seen him as Dan moves left to right within his lane.
Still the driver is at fault though but I drive that roundabout frequently and cyclists just don't use it.
So I can see why it happened but god knows why he didn't use the ramp and lane underneath.

But DW is riding in front of him in the lane he is about to move into! If you only look in the mirror and not in front of you to the lane you are moving to, you are driving dangerously.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/02/2023 16:20

I’ve never seen a cyclist on that road before.

Xol · 22/02/2023 16:26

Nanny0gg · 22/02/2023 12:13

Having watched the video, I can't see that the driver did anything wrong.

Cyclists should be MADE to wear high-viz clothing and helmets

Also, they keep begging for cycle lanes. There was one available he didn't use

I do hope you don't drive.

How do you know a cycle lane was available? As a PP has pointed out, the one in that area is full of broken glass and has been - and may still be - closed off.

Do you really think that if a cyclist rides on the road without wearing high viz clothing car drivers should just feel free to drive into them?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/02/2023 16:31

I just wonder why DW was in the centre lane? I know that road, all lanes lead in the same direction, the lanes don’t lead off anywhere.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/02/2023 16:20

I’ve never seen a cyclist on that road before.

Judging from this thread, nor have a lot of other drivers, on that road nor on many others, despite there being thousands of cyclists on the road.

But if drivers don't look properly and pay attention, they will not see any cyclists on the road. Dressed up in hi-viz and lit up like a Christmas tree or not.

BelleMarionette · 22/02/2023 16:32

100% the driver at fault. Your post is a willful misinterpretation of what happened.

The cyclist is in the middle of the lane, as is advised for cyclist safety. This is to improve visibility, and discourage unsafe overtaking.

The driver changes lane, driving into the cyclist (who has stayed in the lane). Clearly driving without due care and attention.

It's daylight, so lights aren't required. There is not a legal requirement to have high Vis as a cyclist, nor is it required to be seen.

I'm a driver, and I'm also a cyclist. It's not unreasonable to expect drivers to drive with due care and attention.

BelleMarionette · 22/02/2023 16:37

As an aside, I've been hit by cars, when wearing hi Vis, and having lights. If drivers don't check their mirrors, it doesn't matter what you are wearing.

Sally090807 · 22/02/2023 15:23

Should of added “not using the cycle lane”.

Should HAVE.

Where does it say in the Highway Code that cyclists can only use cycle lanes? Since when did not using a cycle lane make it your fault if some idiot hits you from behind?

jonnyfancypants · 22/02/2023 16:54

blobby10 · 22/02/2023 15:56

I'm a cyclist and don't think DW helped himself! I always wear a bright yellow jacket, even in bright sunshine, have a bright yellow helmet and, at this time of year, bright yellow overshoes. During summer months when I just have a jersey on, they are always brightly coloured - never black or dark. There would be little excuse for a car driver not to see me. DW (and Jeremy Vine) don't seem to take the same precautions which I think is a bit daft.

There's no reason for the car not to have seen DW as he's right in front of him!!
High viz or not, if a driver doesn't have the vision to see a cyclist on the road on front of him then they should not be driving.

How funny that the OP has buggered off after their inflammatory one and only post...

ivykaty44 · 22/02/2023 16:57

someone said to me the other day the safest colour for s cyclist to wear is blue or blue and white - its the same colours as a police car and drivers look out for police cars.

But then I saw the thread about the poster who got 6 points for being on her phone and the police van was behind her - so im not sure it'd work

Wonnle · 22/02/2023 17:13

The car driver knocked him off 100%

lljkk · 22/02/2023 17:41

car drove into cyclist. Horrible to watch.

All the cars are dark colours too. Maybe cars should be mandated to be neon colours to make themselves more visible.

Freedomfromguilt · 22/02/2023 18:12

It was the car drivers fault, but when do people start to take responsibility for their own actions. It is obvious that a cyclist is far more fragile than someone in a metal box packed with safety features, and far too many cyclists seem to be out to prove a point. I cycle but there is no way I would cycle across that roundabout when there is a safe alternative. I also choose not to swim with sharks or base jump.

Magentax · 23/02/2023 11:38

I just wonder why DW was in the centre lane? I know that road, all lanes lead in the same direction, the lanes don’t lead off anywhere.

So why did the car need to change lanes?

Tessisme · 23/02/2023 12:30

Glad I watched the video rather than take OP's word for it. How, in anyone's world, was that the cyclist's fault? Bloody hell. Stupid driver.

Dis626 · 23/02/2023 12:50

The driver was completely at fault! He changed lanes and hit him.

astarsheis · 23/02/2023 17:20

@lookluv I am so disappointed that you have not come back to comment on the comments 😉🚴🤔

But you don't know whether there is a safe alternative. Upthread someone has pointed out that the cycle lane there may be closed and is generally scattered with broken glass.

For the same reason as anyone else who uses that lane? I assume it's not there just for decoration.

Yes but it’s generally used for overtaking, or people would be getting in place for when it splits.

If DW was going home ( l know where he lives) he would have been on the inside lane.

If he wasn’t going home, then the middle lane leads practically into a tram stop and the outside lane into the city centre.

surely It will depend where he from and where he was exiting? He could have been heading for the third exit and if so he will have entered the roundabout in the right hand or middle lane lane? I seem to remember that if coming from the west /ecllesall rd side and heading for the train station you’d want the third exit and both the middle lane and right lane are for right turns?

OntarioBagnet · 23/02/2023 17:42

He was heading for the train station from home (I don’t know where he lives though, so unsure of what direction he approached from).

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/02/2023 17:48

@OntarioBagnet

EH? That’s completely the opposite direction from the train station. He’s pedalling away from the city not towards it. If the station is at 12.00, he’sgoing in the absolute opposite direction at about 25 past.

I’m a cyclist commuter- as in it’s not a “hobby”, i don’t have a car and it’s my sole mode of transport.

dark cars parked up at night are actually incredibly difficult to see. Skips on the road are required to have lights for visibility, and they are bright yellow. I do think there should be a simulate requirement for vehicles to have a parking light if parked on a road, especially a busy one.

as for cycle lanes- for those complaining cyclists don’t use them, I suggest you get on a bike one day and try it for yourself. I have never met one that wasn’t so badly planned that it was at best a complete hindrance to my journey, at worst put pedestrians and/or cyclists in danger. We’ve just had a shiny new one put in our city, and as far as I can tell it’s mainly used as a car park for people nipping into the shops.
