No high viz clothing
No lights
Cycling cross lane
Car driver in lane does not chnge direction
Lights on
Cyclist comes across his lane
Cyclist does not give enough clearance

Were you the car driver OP?

It was daylight - so high viz and lights should not have been required. What happened was clear enough on a dash-cam so should have been easy to see in life.

The cycle stayed in lane as all went around a curve.
The car moved from its own lane onto the cyclist's lane and rear-ended the bike.
I'm not sure how anyone except the car-driver could have prevented the crash.

lieselotte · 22/02/2023 15:21

No high viz clothing - no requirement for people to wear high viz clothing while cycling. Should everyone be wearing high viz at all times

Not at all times but I totally think pedestrians should wear hi-vis on dark evenings in the winter.

However, when you drive a big metal box on wheels, the onus is on you to drive safely and not hit people. That is the bottom line.

OntarioBagnet · 22/02/2023 15:22

I'm a very keen cyclist - I cycle thousands of miles a year inc commuting.
I used to commute across Sheffield and know that road and roundabout very well.

I disagree with quite a bit of the OP - especially about high vis and lights. I have seen a photo of the impact but not a video so I don't know who was changing lanes, etc

However I have to say he is BONKERS for cycling round the roundabout. I used the underpass and the off road cycle paths at the side of the road. The only thing I can think is that he thinks it's slightly quicker as the road is a straight line (ish) rather than the underpass takes you into the middle (underneath) of the roundabout and then back out again - so sort of a zigzag. Maybe adds ten meters to your journey, a slight uphill incline on the way out and I guess a few pedestrians to avoid. I will normally not use a cycle lane if it inconveniences me too much but this one is pretty good and the risks too high for me NOT to use it.

There's nothing need for the offensive use of language.

OK.

Anyone who thinks that the cyclist was in the wrong is a dangerous, arrogant bloody idiot, who shouldn't be in charge of a motorised vehicle, ever.

Should of added “not using the cycle lane”.

😂
I'm still amazed how rabid people become when it comes to discussing cycling.
It's not just mumsnet.

Indeed. It's just ridiculous. Anyone without disabilities should be cycling more and driving less! Better for them and better for the environment. But with all the dangerous angry drivers, not a great sell, I know.

SinnerBoy · 22/02/2023 15:24

Should of added “not using the cycle lane”.

And would still be wrong, there's no legal requirement to use them.

StillWantingADog · 22/02/2023 15:24

Clearly it was not his fault at all. But I think he was very brave to be cycling down that type of road. I mean it should be perfectly safe to do so, but just sadly is not.

Weirdwonders · 22/02/2023 15:25

As OP’s not come back I’ll assume this is obvious trolling

SoupDragon · 22/02/2023 10:30

You'll never get that on MN.

Oh yes wouldn't that be a treat 🚴😊

ivykaty44 · 22/02/2023 15:26

At least 25% of car drivers should not have a licence.

that % will increase for over 65s as their eye sight fails and they fail to use glasses amongst other things, but the time they get to 90 there are probably only 5% that can still drive at a reasonable standard and there are 134000 of them, 505 centenarians and one is 108

Apparently, something like 20% of drivers don't have one.

ivykaty44 · 22/02/2023 15:37

@SinnerBoy

one million drivers don't have insurance

you often have calls for cyclists to have insurance (95% do anyway through various means including home insurance) but never see calls for all drivers to have insurance

NewPapaGuinea · 22/02/2023 15:44

Having seen the footage, anyone thinking this is not the driver’s fault needs to be retested.

Yes, we've had experience of that, unfortunately.

Walrussy · 22/02/2023 15:55

Can only assume the over 50% who voted that OP isn't being unreasonable didn't watch the footage. It's blatantly the driver's fault.

blobby10 · 22/02/2023 15:56

I'm a cyclist and don't think DW helped himself! I always wear a bright yellow jacket, even in bright sunshine, have a bright yellow helmet and, at this time of year, bright yellow overshoes. During summer months when I just have a jersey on, they are always brightly coloured - never black or dark. There would be little excuse for a car driver not to see me. DW (and Jeremy Vine) don't seem to take the same precautions which I think is a bit daft.

NewPapaGuinea · 22/02/2023 15:57

Fact is, driving standards are appalling. This is what needs addressing with harder tests and retesting, particularly when involved in an RTC. Plus, clearing off all the terrible drivers off the roads will ease congestion.

Some people will go to any length to excuse the behaviour of drivers if there's a cyclist involved anywhere in the equation

Oopsadaisysgranny · 22/02/2023 15:59

I was more worried that an ambulatory crew came out for him . But on the same day an ambulatory refused to go to an elderly man having a stroke !!!! Now that worries me

Everyone should dress accordingly to protect themselves from those capable of doing them harm.

Nah that's not right is it?

I’m a cyclist who does usually wear hi vis (except in the summer, when I usually cycle in a crop top and hot pants, and oddly enough, drivers seem at their most capable they’ve ever been of seeing me then) and I’m still not convinced it’s got anything to do with hi vis. If it did, then there would be no more accidental collisions involving two or more shiny cars covered in lights and reflectors. Nobody would rear end anyone else at a junction or roundabout, with those bright red warning brake lights glaring right at them. The illuminated yellow and blue traffic bollard sitting atop a traffic island at the end of my street wouldn’t bear witness, with its dents and jaunty slanted angle, to regular confrontations with oncoming vehicles. The unfortunate incident last year involving our town centre Christmas tree and a delivery driver wouldn’t have happened.

None of these examples happen because the subjects of the collision weren’t bright or visible enough, they happen because of drivers not paying attention when driving, not leaving adequate space, and not looking out for unexpected hazards.

ToastToastTea · 22/02/2023 16:10

Looks like the car at fault to me.
I am surprised Dan wasn't wearing high-vis clothing though.

LakieLady · 22/02/2023 16:10

I'm usually the first to find fault with cyclists but even I can see that is no way the cyclist's fault.

The driver can't have checked his wing mirror properly before changing lanes.

Xol · 22/02/2023 16:10

OP, I suspect you've muddled this with a video Jeremy Vine posted where a driver cut across in front of him and he almost hit the car.
