...the UK is becoming? The scenes in Liverpool were shocking and I fear this is just the beginning.

Germans have been fire bombing asylum hostels for years.

We are not extreme right wing.

Of course you've got a few idiots like in Liverpool last night, but they are by far the minority unlike in the rest of Europe.

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/02/2023 20:43

I am not German and I am not talking about Germany. I am British and talking about the UK and its worrying shift to the right.

I'm not right - wing. But the UK as a whole could do well by shifting to the right enough, to be in the centre. That would be great.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 11/02/2023 20:48

I think you'll find the British Labour party elected a far left person as their leader.

I can't think of a far right Tory leader.

Lordamighty · 11/02/2023 20:49

If you think people in Liverpool are right wing you are deluded. Knowsley is one of the safest Labour seats in the country.

mynameiscalypso · 11/02/2023 20:50

Right wing extremism is definitely a growing issue both here and in other countries and has been for a few years. It's clearly not the majority of people but it is definitely a concern.

feellikeanalien · 11/02/2023 20:50

How would you define someone who you classify as right wing OP?

Riverlee · 11/02/2023 20:51

I actually feel the UK is less fat right then it was a few years ago. The Brexit vote brought out the worst in people.

Thistimeonly · 11/02/2023 20:52

The uk is very Liberal really. It you want right wing look back to the nightmare that was the 70s

How would you define someone who you classify as right wing OP?

People who stand outside places homing asylum seekers chanting "Get them out" is right wing.

Airupnonsense · 11/02/2023 20:52

People in Knowsley definitely are not right wing in that they vote labour - but I wouldn’t say they are liberal. I’m not surprised they hate that there’s a hotel full of asylum seekers nearby.

GetTheBehind · 11/02/2023 20:53

As a US citizen living in the UK (have done for decades) I think yabu. The UK is not generally right wing at all. The more right wing main party here is more left leaning than the left wing party in the states.

I know "you aren't American or German and you're not talking about America or Germany", so save your fingers! But you need to say what you are willing to compare it to. You're concerned about how right wing the UK is becoming compared to....last week? The rest of Europe? Ten years ago? All of which would make me say yabu.

That said, there are clearly worrying right wing trends in the UK.

AnneLovesGilbert · 11/02/2023 20:53

Can you be more specific? The police arrested 15 people, they’re being dealt with. There was a disturbance, it’s over. What is it you fear is going to happen?

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/02/2023 20:55

I'm comparing it to the UK 2 years, 5, years, 10 years ago @GetTheBehind.

Eh?!! There's been a right wing government in power for 12 years, most often with a pretty decent majority.

YANBU, the news reports have identified the protests in Liverpool as having been organised by a number of far right groups. No place for that sort of thing, awful.

Viviennemary · 11/02/2023 20:57

I dont find extreme left wing people any better tbh.

GetTheBehind · 11/02/2023 20:57

Well then, I disagree. I think Brexit was a low point and that was less than 10 years ago.

So I think yabu

CockSpadget · 11/02/2023 20:58

YANBU. Right wing extremism is the fastest growing terror threat in the uk according to the MET.

CockSpadget · 11/02/2023 21:00

There have been no left wing terror attacks in the U.K. The same can’t be said for the right.

Have you seen the footage @AnneLovesGilbert? Hundreds of people chanting outside a hotel. Hundreds! And then the right wing thugs turned up.

This is not "business as usual" in the UK.Hmm

florenceandthemac · 11/02/2023 21:00

The people of Liverpool/Knowsley weren't protesting about the asylum seekers just being housed there. It was due to the number of those asylum seekers hanging around schools and approaching young girls in recent weeks

CockSpadget · 11/02/2023 20:58

Does that mean the UK as a whole is becoming more right wing though 🤔?

underneaththeash · 11/02/2023 21:01

I think it’s becoming very left wing. Do you understand the difference?

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 11/02/2023 21:02

@TooBigForMyBoots nice of you to notice now it's effecting your life. We are Jewish, it's been getting awful for us for a longtime.....and we live in Manchester which has the 2nd largest community in the UK.

Bard6817 · 11/02/2023 21:03

I don’t know the peope involved in liverpool.

I wouldn’t believe any newspapers or online about whther it’s right wingers or not. Everything is skewed for an agenda these days.

Maybe it’s just ordinary people in liverpool who don’t get free hotel, phones, allowances, support, medical needs met, pissed off that people they perceive are piss takers do.
