...the UK is becoming? The scenes in Liverpool were shocking and I fear this is just the beginning.

@TooBigForMyBoots What do you mean?

GetTheBehind · 11/02/2023 21:45

When the op starts whipping out the sheep and rolling around laughing emojis, you know you're in for some quality debate

QueueEtwo · 11/02/2023 21:45

VeniVidiWeeWee

I don't think the OP did mention far right, she mentioned a move to the right!

It's you that keeps adding 'Far' as a prefix!
And you talk about my comprehension!

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/02/2023 21:42

@feellikeanalien and @MarshaMelrose what did the Pro refugee group do?

It was provocative. They upped the ante and stretched the police.

Phos · 11/02/2023 21:48

Just when I thought we'd reached the limit of ludicrous posts

Just when I thought we'd reached the limit of political and economic illiteracy.

Go do some research, you might even learn something.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 11/02/2023 20:48

I think you'll find the British Labour party elected a far left person as their leader.

I can't think of a far right Tory leader.

Comments like this really proving the OPs point for her.

Dymaxion · 11/02/2023 21:49

The majority of people voted in 2016 to end uncontrolled mass immigration & ‘take back control’ of the country’s borders. Yet six years later we are still being inundated with hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants.

Are we though ? Immigration from countries not in the EU has risen, but that doesn't make those people's migration illegal, most immigration is through legal channels.
Are students studying at UK universities illegal immigrants ? Are people from Hong Kong and Ukraine illegal immigrants ? Are asylum seekers illegal immigrants, such as those people who helped UK forces in Afghanistan and had to flee for their lives as a result ?
Who do you class as illegal immigrants ?

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/02/2023 21:50

We're they responsible for any violence or damage?

I'm not right - wing. But the UK as a whole could do well by shifting to the right enough, to be in the centre. That would be great.

Sorry, is this a joke? You think this country/government is centre? The Overton Window has moved so far to the right, even Labour are no longer left wing or even in the centre.

BluebellFlowersAreMyFave · 11/02/2023 21:51

I’m from Liverpool. The riots were NOT because there are immigrants in the hotels. The riot was because, an adult male immigrant approached a Liverpudlian school girl in her uniform, she’s 15 & asked for her number. After she told him it’s illegal to ask her for that as she’s underage he proceeded to say, “that’s good” when the young kid said she was only 15.

Please do not believe the media. Go on twitter search, type in Kirkby Liverpool & you’ll find the video of the girl being approached by the adult man.

Do I think setting a police van on fire was correct? No, but I think trying to groom an underage child is a million times worse.

LightDrizzle · 11/02/2023 21:52

Dim xenophobes and racists are to be found across the political spectrum. Are you totally unaware of the anti-Semitism in certain sections of the Labour Party?

I think it is dangerous and complacent to be so lazy attributing this problem solely to a move to the far right.

Thedogscollar · 11/02/2023 21:52

VeniVidiWeeWee · 11/02/2023 21:44

I take it that maths is not your strong point?

Why should I trust anything else you say?

I couldn't give a monkeys if you trust what I say or not. You are allowed your opinion and I'm allowed to disagree. I only know you defended the appointment of Lee Anderson and for that alone your opinion means nothing to me.
As for maths not being my strong point I did manage A level with an A grade I only put 10000% to stress how strongly I agreed with @ilovesooty but I guess comprehension ain't your strong point.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 11/02/2023 21:53

It’s a shame that in any other area of life, if a girl said she was sexually harassed we’d all believe her. However, when it comes to something uncomfortable like an immigrant doing the harassing we’d rather just assume that it’s about racism rather than safety

feellikeanalien · 11/02/2023 21:53

@TooBigForMyBoots I wasn't referring to a pro refugee group. I was simply using the example of what happened in Merseyside as the type of situation where either right or left can inflame a situation for their own ends.

That’s why there was a riot.

Middletoleft · 11/02/2023 21:55

It's a bit worrying, the shift to the right throughout Europe really. People never fucking learn.

MarshaMelrose · 11/02/2023 21:57

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/02/2023 21:50

We're they responsible for any violence or damage?

They heighten tensions that lead to violence. They were unnecessary to the protest which was already impolitic, took police resources from where they were required and escalated a situation that could be,easily foreseen.
Even if you don't lob a firebomb, you can still be part of the problem.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 11/02/2023 21:57

Does racism trump misogyny?

People who stand outside places homing asylum seekers chanting "Get them out" is right wing.

And are you deliberately missing the context of why they were outside shouting that.....

Alltheprettyseahorses · 11/02/2023 21:58

IsTheOffDutyDoneYet · 11/02/2023 21:36

I live semi-locally. There has been an increase in teenage girls, in school uniforms, being approached by men who are housed in the hotel. There is a video, taken by a young girl, who was asked for sex by one such male. She explained she was 15. He didn’t care. I do not, and will never, condone the actions of those last night who wrecked the police van. There were unfortunately people who were simply out to cause trouble, which is just out of order. But parents are worried for the safety of their children, and nothing has been done about it. Asylum seekers have every right to live peacefully in communities without being condemned by yobs. However, when something like this is happening it also needs to be addressed. Not necessarily in the way it was, but concerns that are raised need to be acted on by those in an authoritative position to do so.

This. I have friends in the area and they are terrified for their kids. The dismissal of a very real problem as being 'unsubstantiated rumours' or 'gossip' is downright shocking. The men responsible need to be dealt with by the police as a matter of urgency but they haven't been. Shades of Rotherham Rochdale and all the rest as well as incidents like in Cologne where members of the liberal left (and I'd normally count myself as a member of that group) ignored and dismissed the abuse of girls and women because their ideology mattered more than victims of sex attacks.

Echobelly · 11/02/2023 21:59

This is all the outcome of a particularly vile type of politics that is to the forefront these days - right wing parties around the world realise they can no longer offer people a better future or even now claim superiority at managing the economy. Two things central to winning the 'people getting more right wing as they get older' crowd. People like me are supposed to have gone Tory by now accepting, even relectantly, that we've done OK and hey, we want our kids to do OK so we'd better keep things as they are. Except we can see it's already been a bit harder for us than it was for our parents, and it will be a magnitude harder for our kids. Making things better is hard.

But making things worse for less privileged groups? That's easy. You can easily make things worse for poor people, migrants, sick and disabled people, people of colour, women, LGBTQ+ people etc. So RW parties are going all in for the culture wars - create more 'enemies' for your voters and you can easily claim to be 'doing something' by making legislation that hurts them. And even better it works across the social divide - both the richest can go for it as they don't want their hard earned tax going on 'those people' and the poorest can be made to think they're worse off because of 'those people' and not a government that doesn't care about them and won't do anything to help them. It's a totally disgusting way of doing things, but it seems to be what politics is all about now.

Madamecastafiore · 11/02/2023 22:01

And yet we have the left wing standing by trans women telling us we need to shut up and stop getting cross about our rights as women being eroded at every turn.

The majority of people voted in 2016 to end uncontrolled mass immigration & ‘take back control’ of the country’s borders. Yet six years later we are still being inundated with hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants. Nobody voted for this, so it’s inevitable that some people are going to be very angry indeed about politicians’ failure to tackle the issue, to the point at which they feel they have no alternative but to take direct action.
There is currently a massive gap on the populist right of British politics which is waiting to be filled. People who want action on illegal immigration, rather than more empty words, radical tax & benefit cuts, much lower energy & fuel prices rather than ‘net zero’, the return of the death penalty, ending all the transgender & ‘woke’ crap etc etc are currently politically homeless.

They are not illegal immigrants. Stop reading the Daily Mail.
