...the UK is becoming? The scenes in Liverpool were shocking and I fear this is just the beginning.

It's very alarming. I really hope we're not heading for a period like the 70s, where the National Front had a massive march through a very ethnically mixed area of South London.

I think Brexit created a climate where racism and xenophobia are less unacceptable than they were 10 or 15 years ago.

I agree. Johnson began this by purging the party of moderate Tories and insisting that commitment to Brexit and pandering to the right wing cause was a prerequisite of standing as a Tory candidate.

Not, of course, that he's particularly right wing himself. His one and only conviction is his own advancement.

The far left and far right are concerning in equal measure.

100%.

Right wing country? Have you seen the polls? Most people blame the Tories for everything. I don't condone the actions of this group of extremists in Liverpool but we are hardly seeing the rise of Nazi Germany here. We've coordinated left wing strikes to try and bring down the government most days for months.

OP the Country has definitely moved to the Right, fuelled by Brexit & the Tory party & furrled by their rhetoric!

You only have to see the vicious responses on this thread to see the way it's going!

It's the "let's not talk about the UK's shift to the right" posts that are shocking.

There have been no left wing terror attacks in the U.K. The same can’t be said for the right.

What about when the daily mail offices were smokebombed by TRAs?

IsTheOffDutyDoneYet · 11/02/2023 21:36

I live semi-locally. There has been an increase in teenage girls, in school uniforms, being approached by men who are housed in the hotel. There is a video, taken by a young girl, who was asked for sex by one such male. She explained she was 15. He didn’t care. I do not, and will never, condone the actions of those last night who wrecked the police van. There were unfortunately people who were simply out to cause trouble, which is just out of order. But parents are worried for the safety of their children, and nothing has been done about it. Asylum seekers have every right to live peacefully in communities without being condemned by yobs. However, when something like this is happening it also needs to be addressed. Not necessarily in the way it was, but concerns that are raised need to be acted on by those in an authoritative position to do so.

Futurethoughts · 11/02/2023 21:36

Far right isn’t Sunak, Johnson et al. Far right would be BNP, possibly UKIP, etc.

Far right political groups don’t tend to legalise same sex marriage, for starters.

Diverging · 11/02/2023 21:37

Smokebomb eh. Such death and carnage.

ilovesooty · 11/02/2023 21:38

Some Tory MPs are virtually indistinguishable from UKIP /Reform.

There's been a 400% increase in the number of hate crimes recorded since 2010. Race hate alone increased by 156% with 71% of all hate related crime recorded in 2021 falling into the race category. But no, the UK is definitely not shifting to the right 🙄

This is down to a number of factors - one being that it’s easier now than in 2010 to record a hate crime, most forces allow hate crime recording to be done via their website.

Also ‘hate crime’ has a very different meaning - it can mean saying a man cannot be a woman. People have been arrested over doing this.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 11/02/2023 21:19

Serious about what?

Keir Starmer could not be described as far left. Far from it I'd say.
Yet you were on here the other day defending the appointment of the far right Lee Anderson.
The Tory's only answer for connecting with the North of the country. Yet another example of a lying and corrupt politician with connections to far right supremacists.

QueueEtwo · 11/02/2023 21:40

The Polls do favour the Labour Party but only because Starmer is being very careful around the Brexit Debate & immigration!

If he actually said out loud what lots of what people would describe as the 'Liberal Left' believe I'm sure those Polls would swing back pretty quickly!!

I imagine if there had been such a thing as hate crimes in the 1960s there would have been a fairly large number recorded. I don't think the country is becoming more right wing. I think that some people of all political persuasions are becoming more intolerant and rather than engage in rational debate they resort to name calling and stereotyping. You can see this in relation to immigration and the trans issue.

As another pp said (I think it might have been MarshaMelrose) when you don't listen to people and they become scared to air their views because of fear of being called racist/homophobic/sexist/transphobic then some people will become frustrated. If this shit show of a government had a sensible and coherent immigration policy then this type of situation would not arise.

I actually believe that the majority of British people are fairly tolerant and just want to be allowed to get on with their lives and their fellow man. I also think that there are a lot of agitators both on the right and the left who use situations such as the one in Merseyside to further their own agendas.

OK.

Please supply evidence that would hold up in court that the UK is moving to the far right.

All you are doing is giving anecdotal evidence and your opinion.

Cnidarian · 11/02/2023 20:56

Eh?!! There's been a right wing government in power for 12 years, most often with a pretty decent majority.

YANBU, the news reports have identified the protests in Liverpool as having been organised by a number of far right groups. No place for that sort of thing, awful.

The current "Conservative" government is further left than Tony Blair's Labour government.

It wasn't in Liverpool. Liverpool is one of the only cities that far right groups can't match through. They don't get out of the train station. The incident posted was the only occurrence of children being targeted by people from the hotel. It's time that the dog's and don'ts of our society was taught to people coming in. I didn't agree with the protest. The numbers shown were made up of the counter protest, as well. There were men letting off fireworks and throwing lit bottles. One Policeman decided to batter a 15 year old girl who was told not to backchat when she was explaining that she didn't know what was going on and had just turned up because her mates were. That's when the matrix van was burned out. There's protests all of Europe about how we are being forced to accept the views of Islam on sex, race, other religions, sexuality and that under age girls are fair game etc. The Police put out a statement that the incident involving a 22 year old man sexually harassing school girls didn't happen on Merseyside, but it did. As said, I don't agree with how things turned out, but the denial from the Police is going to get a reaction.

The Tories have wanted the UK to be like America for a long time, they're sure getting there.

Thedogscollar · 11/02/2023 21:45

In my home town this week we had a far right group protesting outside a hotel housing refugees. It is scary and disturbing.
