The joke here is that the Tories can preach about biology and adult human females all they like yet won't do a single thing to affect issues which by and large affect the lives of women. I'm glad he's shoring up votes from the 'WE ARE WIMMEN' crowd because god knows he'll need you lot when he's trying to explain why food banks are popping up all over the place, families are choosing between eating and heating, people are dying as a result of inadequate healthcare, people can't afford the basics. After all, as long as Rishi knows what a woman is I don't give a toss if the kids down the road are sharing a tin of beans for dinner.

I’m currently having to choose between my two strongest beliefs of education and women and I don’t like it.

Me too.

VladmirsPoutine · 02/02/2023 22:20

People who are/were prepared to vote for the tories based on this alone actually wanted to vote tory regardless but struggled with looking at how just about everything in the country is on fire. This 'single issue' vote helps them to reconcile that.

Exactly. Can't afford to keep the kids warm? Can't afford the rent? Fuck that triviality, Rishi knows what a woman is. Hurrah!

100%

He's spotted votes in this and hopes that no one that this appeals to will put the 2 and 2 of how did it get this far in the last 12 years when such a party of authentic allies has been at the helm

I'm sure Keir's mum could explain what a woman is if he's a bit confused.

Maybe while he is kneeling..............

Women

Sod this denigration. Take your women hating with you.

greyfox82 · 02/02/2023 22:22

I mean let's be clear we should not be celebrating the Tory government on this, because they really could give no fucks about women's rights! Just because Rishi got the PR memo and said the right thing at the right time for the anti woke, doesn't mean he's advocating for women's rights!

MaybeIWillFuckOffThen · 02/02/2023 22:23

Kalpatra · 02/02/2023 22:18

Me too.

I'd say in this instance it's pretty obvious that if you have any social conscience you do whatever it takes to vote the Tories out. Because even if the Tories protect sex based rights, it will still be shit for women under them (partially because they are inherently regressive re sex equality, and partly because it is shit for EVERYONE who isn't very rich under the Tories).

I think the recent events in Scotland mean that this is now a live issue in people's minds, in flux in a way it hasn't been for a number of years and up for debate in a public forum (which is all that's ever really been needed, for this to be able to be discussed as a tricky competition of rights that needs unpacking rather than being an unspeakable no-debate topic). What's not up for debate is that Tories are bastards, however many chromosomes they may or may not have, and we need them OUT.

Doubtful, she suffered from stills disease and died in 2015.

ghostyslovesheets · 02/02/2023 22:27

I hate this wimmin shot thrown at those of us who value women only spaces and rights - lazy in the extreme really - I will NEVER vote tory - but I am glad one high profile politician called it as it is - opens up the debate and might push KS to have an actual view on this - in the 80's we where told womens/black/gay section of OUR party where divisive and we where all workers united - yeah well I was sexually harassed as a teen on more then one picket line
womens issues MATTER - our rights matter - our lives matter - until a party that also supports my other political view recognises that I am partyless and that sucks
No more leaflet folding, no more door knocking, no more driving people to polling stations from me - and that makes me sad

IVFbeenverylucky · 02/02/2023 21:41

@SavoirFlair I agree with you basically, but the left is ideological, the right is about money and power. I'd rather have beliefs and values tbh.

Hmmm, I dunno. If those beliefs stretch to believing that anybody with a cock can be a woman than I'd rather vote for power, especially if that power is being used to challenge woke nonsense.

Cornelious2011 · 02/02/2023 22:28

I always voted Labour (when I lived in England). I can't vote Tory or Labour in my part of uk but if I could I'd not be giving Labour my vote based on this issue alone. I'd rather vote Tory.

AlisonDonut · 02/02/2023 22:29

ghostyslovesheets · 02/02/2023 22:00

But it's a major new topic - given the recent issues of locking male rapists in women's prisons - for many women this IS a pressing topic!

It isn't that new, they've been locking rapists in women's prisons for years.

Vinniepolis · 02/02/2023 22:30

IVFbeenverylucky · 02/02/2023 21:41

The right is not about money and power. I known many “right wing” people who have neither “money” nor “power”. I have “values” too, but they might be different to your “values”. And I‘m not a Rishi fan either - he’s not right wing enough for me! So while he might be prepared to say what a woman is I’m not convinced he’s not just seen a PR opportunity to differentiate himself from Labour/SNP/everyone else.

ghostyslovesheets · 02/02/2023 22:30

NEWS sorry not new

ChocAuVin · 02/02/2023 22:30

Labour can now get in the bin.

They’ve made this woman politically homeless.

Sazzling · 02/02/2023 22:30

This is all theatre designed to distract you from real issues. Like people dying, like energy prices, like recession, like blowing billions on covid for very little benefit.

Probably part of other, darker, agendas too, but they might be too rich for Mumsnet for now

BankOfDave · 02/02/2023 22:30

My 10 yo is doing mock SAT tests that have harder questions than this.

What has politics and the world come to when this is the question we ask of our world leaders.

I agree. I feel strongly about this as a GC feminist but the issue has been hijacked by the right and has now become a shibboleth that enables people to ignore the complexities in the world, in politics and in gender.

I would question why anyone who cares about women is watching Peirs Morgan, let alone listening to a Rishi Sunak

MsFogi · 02/02/2023 22:33

I thought the correct answer to the 'What is a woman?' question is 'Whatever Nicola Sturgeon says is a woman today' - has no one told Rishi?

And yet it one statement the evil Tories have managed to quell a lot of anxiety that many women genuinely feel, however patronising you want to be about it.

If all the other parties are so morally and ideologically superior and cared about women why don’t they say it? Instead of gaslighting and calling us ‘hoarders of rights’ ffs. Hoarders. Just let that sink in. Hoarding of hard won rights that protect our bodies, dignity and livelihoods.

Healthcare and any vulnerability would be a living nightmare without sex-based protections. Sharing a tin of beans is small fry compared to enforced unisex arrangements.
