To hate the new Cauldron sausages

Cauldron Lincolnshire sausages used to be the best veggie sausages out the market, but they have changed the recipe to make them vegan, and in the process they have ruined them. They have gone from being plump and tasty to these awful flaccid plasticky tasting tubes that need a specially designed packet to stop them from splodging out all the tray.

Have you tried the new recipe? Aibu?

No I've not tried the new ones, didn't realise - I'm gutted to read this as they were the only veggie sausages we liked and I've just used the last packet up from the freezer.

biddyboo · 29/01/2023 16:03

It's also really annoyed me that they are trying to pass them off as the same product when they are entirely different. I bought 3 packets with my online shopping and I'm going to have to bin them. Two packets are in the freezer, but apparently they can't be frozen anymore, probably because of the weird texture. They also have substantially less protein than the old version.

Oh nooooooo! YANBU I agree they were the best. I’m a lifelong vegetarian but not vegan and this vegan thing has ruined so many of my meals! At work now they keep using vegan plastic meat stuff where I used to have lovely proper veggie lasagne etc

LozzaChops101 · 29/01/2023 16:06

Quorn vegan sausages are just mush as well. Inedible. I’m sticking to nut burgers and stuff without the fake meat element now, for freezer food.

Urgh this would annoy me too. I've found lots of places don't do bean burgers and the like anymore because they have those beyond meat ones on the menu instead. Yuk

Oh no sad to read they have changed them. Did notice that I couldn't get then from Tesco this past month. I don't like any others so that's a few quick dinners off my list. Hate this move to veganise all vegetarian food.

Yellowbird54321 · 29/01/2023 16:09

I bought some. unwittingly the other day OP and totally agree with you. They were flaccid and pastey and I struggled to get them out of the packet due to the weird consistency. I'm properly pissed off as they were always my fave veggie sausage. I have been shopping today and had to buy the quorn ones 🙄

n3wnamewhodis · 29/01/2023 16:11

Yes they're rank. And so much black pepper! Had them earlier this week and they were so disappointing.

Elphame · 29/01/2023 16:13

Same here! They are awful now.

The texture is horrid and they look like extruded mush.

Spanielsarepainless · 29/01/2023 16:13

Linda McCartney went the same route. We are them most weeks, though we aren't vegetarian, but then they went vegan. The pea protein makes them smell like farts. Gross.

Plitvice · 29/01/2023 16:16

I have been eating them my whole life. I even have a photo of me as an older baby chomping on slices! During that time, they went from obscurity to a known brand (as vegetarianism went mainstream). I have a few old packs left in the freezer. I don't know what I'll be doing after those are finished. I don't like Quorn or Linda and I have not been impressed by some of the new brands which I only tried once (and never again!)

UnaOfStormhold · 29/01/2023 16:17

Noooo!

Tinkerbyebye · 29/01/2023 16:20

Oh no. I love cauldron, but if they have changed the recipe that’s bad

RichardMarxisinnocent · 29/01/2023 16:23

Another one who has tried the new ones and hates them. Struggled to get them out of the packet, the texture and plasticky coating are horrible, and they leaked lots of liquid onto the baking tray.

SoupDragon · 29/01/2023 16:23

When you read threads/reviews like this it makes you wonder who they did their product testing on!

bobby81 · 29/01/2023 16:23

Completely agree, they are awful now and it's happening with more & more products. In catering for vegans some companies are pushing out vegetarian customers.

Tig33 · 29/01/2023 16:24

I bought a pack yesterday. Couldn’t even get them out of the pack as they are not so much ‘sausages’ as ‘piped tubes of brown mush’. The texture and structure is just wrong.

not sure if this was the case before but it says on the pack not suitable for home freezing. I have definitely frozen them before.

WineDup · 29/01/2023 16:26

You all need to try the Richmond ones. I’ve been vegetarian for 20 years and these are by far the best.

I’m sure you could freeze them before - I always did with no ill effect anyway! We used the last of the old style ones from the freezer last week but the bins have gone since otherwise I’d go and check the packaging!

sweeneytoddsrazor · 29/01/2023 16:27

Have you tried the Richmond meat free ones.? Better than Quorn but not as nice as LM ones used to be. A lot of people I know like the Frys ones but I haven't tried them.

Scarecrowrowboat · 29/01/2023 16:27

Yes tried them last week they also really upset my stomach which they didn't before.

Roarsomemore · 29/01/2023 16:28

I get so annoyed by fake meat being the only veggie option!! I'm veggie because I don't like meat. Burger King only has the fake meat stuff now - why couldn't have they left the bean burger AND added the fake meat stuff? Why no nutcutlets? There are OTHER options. 😩

Saisong · 29/01/2023 16:29

Oh no, I picked up a pack for our dinner today. Family don't like other brands except Richmonds (which are too salty for me). Why do they do this???

Manaslave18 · 29/01/2023 16:31

I know tons of vegetarians and have never met a vegan in my life. While I’m sure there are plenty out there I’d wager there are infinitely more vegetarians so why this rush to turn everything vegan?
