Why are some people on here so horrible?

Wheeesht3 · 02/01/2023 22:58

has anyone else noticed an increase in certain posters who consistently comment with horrible, insulting and deliberately unhelpful things?

im not talking about posts where the OP can’t accept the truth, or where they don’t like to be told they are being unreasonable. I’m talking about certain commenters consistently posting horrible comments. You can recognise it by their username in some cases.

does MN deal with them? There’s several posters I can think of off the top of my head who are horrible everytime they comment, and half the time their comments end up being deleted for being horrible. Maybe it’s just me but I’ve definitely noticed an increase in it recently.

It’s always been like that on here. Some of the people are vile, I’m sure they get a kick out of it or perhaps they are in competition. Just ignore or find another forum.

Keyansier · 02/01/2023 23:02

People just relish being behind the anonymity of a username, especially because you can name change on here so get away with things far more. I've had some absolute howlers of comments directed at me, you just have to learn to laugh at them, or ignore.

ilovesooty · 02/01/2023 23:02

If you report personal attacks they are, as you say, deleted.

urbanbuddha · 02/01/2023 23:04

I agree, it does seem there are more nasties around lately. And the funny LOL posts are disappearing. I hope it’s temporary.

youshouldnthaveasked · 02/01/2023 23:05

Probably because getting a reaction on here is their life and possibly that they are really unhappy and insecure in their own life. Anonymity helps. Internet trolls are the worst

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 02/01/2023 23:05

Because they can be unfortunately. Being anonymous can sometimes do more harm than good.

ilovesooty · 02/01/2023 23:06

This thread will doubtless proceed like all the other ones posted every few days.

IveHadEnoughNowFfs · 02/01/2023 23:07

It’s wild at the moment. I was a long time poster for many years and deleted my account and had a break for a few months because it was just constant nastiness. Back for a week or so and it’s not any better, but I am better at ignoring it because there are some terribly kind, clever and funny posters here who do make it worth sticking around.

SugarplumFairyyy · 02/01/2023 23:08

I've noticed that too! I've only been on here for 2 weeks and one poster wanted a full on argument. I dont understand why people need to be mean and can't be supportive. Also, people cab have differing opinions and still be respectful.
I stuck up for one poster who made a joke and someone called her pathetic. I said to them "come on its a joke". The response and vitriol I got back was crazy. She told me I'm pathetic and she felt sorry for my children the way I am as a mother.
I reported her to mn on grounds of personal attack and they immediately removed her post. Then she moaned about it further down. Smh.

I think some people have such misery inside, the only way to feel better is to create drama and bring misery on other people. Sad, really.

WallaceinAnderland · 02/01/2023 23:08

Because anyone can join so there will be some horrible people. It's the internet, come on. Just ignore or report their posts and move on.

AllyCatTown · 02/01/2023 23:08

I think some people enjoy being contrarians and that often means they come across as horrible as they end up arguing from some ridiculous position.

I think the worst I’ve seen is someone posting about a bereavement and a poster speculating on whether the op had murdered their loved one. I think at best they forget there’s another person at the other end reading the replies, at worst they’re just messed up rotten people.

Boulshired · 02/01/2023 23:12

A percentage join just to do that, there has always been an a minority but there seems a decline in the ones that contained an element of intelligence and wit. The longer you have been a member the more they become an annoyance.

There's been an absolute tsunami of these threads over the last couple of weeks, at least one a day with only minor differences in the thread title and opening post, I'm starting to wonder of it some sort of co-ordinated Let's Hate on MN Posters month. 'Tis odd.

The advice as ever is to report those posts and posters to MNHQ if you view them as falling foul of the Talk Guidelines for the forum and they will either be deleted or not depending on MNHQ, if that is not to taste then either stay away from certain threads/areas of the board or find a more preferable site. Reading, joining or posting on MN is not compulsory.

Cuppasoupmonster · 02/01/2023 23:15

Let’s have some examples, hard to judge without knowing specifics?

TigerDroveAgain · 02/01/2023 23:16

Yawn

greenspaces4peace · 02/01/2023 23:16

interesting i found a reddit link to mn nasty posters.
as a matter of fact they had a whole section concerning mn posts and people's comments...
disconcerting

WatchoRulo · 02/01/2023 23:16

Ah goody the (now daily) "why is everyone so horrid" thread.
If you want flowers and unicorns I think there are forums for that.

No thanks, no flowers and unicorns, just none of the nastiness and name calling that seems to be prevalent now

Perhaps it’s just that lots of people are on the receiving end of these commenters and it’s become more noticeable! Yes, you can report it, but the point was that there’s been a massive increase in it recently.

So report every time you see a post like this. In my experience, MNHQ delete any personal attacks promptly.

Why the need for (yet another) thread on this?

And there remains a lot of wisdom, kindness and support on most threads.

UrsulaPandress · 02/01/2023 23:23

I’ve been here for years and I barely recognise anyone anymore.

IncessantNameChanger · 02/01/2023 23:24

There are some very nasty people on MN. But it's always been like that. I like to think they are sitting at home, alone, in the dark and cold intended that anyone could be happy.

I swear if you posted that you fostered kittens that was otherwise destined to be put down, someone here would creep out of their stone to tell you you was the scum of the earth and child abuser that husband should leave due to your extremist vitriolic attitude. I think some people are damaged. Or they do it for the thrill of their own abuse. My mum was abusive so the best response is none. Abusers survive on pain like a flame needs oxygen. Or they are indeed always right. But I don't think it's the latter tbh

What name calling? You need to tell us what you’ve seen that has sparked this off otherwise the thread is a bit meaningless.

Emmamoo89 · 02/01/2023 23:25

Some people are so judgey on here.

Yeah they do take it down, but my point was that it’s increased massively recently. To the point that some threads have more deleted comments than they do other comments! So many threads are turned into arguments, or personal attacks, or just plain nastiness.

I haven’t made any other threads on this and MN can verify that if you have any concerns. I also haven’t seen any others on this either.

absolutely, it’s such a supportive place for so many people. It’s just a shame that a small minority seem intent on changing that and it’s been on the increase recently.
