Why are some people on here so horrible?

has anyone else noticed an increase in certain posters who consistently comment with horrible, insulting and deliberately unhelpful things?

im not talking about posts where the OP can’t accept the truth, or where they don’t like to be told they are being unreasonable. I’m talking about certain commenters consistently posting horrible comments. You can recognise it by their username in some cases.

does MN deal with them? There’s several posters I can think of off the top of my head who are horrible everytime they comment, and half the time their comments end up being deleted for being horrible. Maybe it’s just me but I’ve definitely noticed an increase in it recently.

Oh sorry! I was told you were friends with purpleflies and in on the joke.

I'm confused at this point anyway 😆

I'm happy to join in drawing the much needed line under this all

@SugarplumFairyyy

I'm not in on any joke. I have no idea who @purpleflies is, nor do I understand why I have to wait till they get home to message me Confused

And yes, @Hobnobswantshernameback, I'm already on to my second large gin.

I think I'll just watch the football instead of this car crash of a thread MN.

Omg BIWI I'm so sorry- I fell for what she was saying for some reason. Apologies! Enjoy the gin 😉

I’ve always said that there are some deeply unhappy posters on mumsnet. I think there are a certain few who really stand out but I take their replies with a pinch of salt

Brilliant how catching up on this thread, a huge section of it turned into people moaning about "what if people name drop" because 2 posters seemed to mention there was a particular poster that they were both aware of. Might have been the same person or out of around 20,000 posts per day then it probably wasn't! But even if it was, surely this person must be standing out for their unhelpful sarcastic comments for people to be picking up on it?

Triflenot · 03/01/2023 21:34

What I have particularly noticed recently, is an increase in respondents not answering an OP’s actual question, but instead taking an entirely different track.

I wondered if literacy levels had deteriorated to such an extent that so many people has clearly not understood the original post.
But I think it’s more than that…

I have no problem at all with robust debate, and individual differences of opinion. But MN has a LOT of mischief makers currently.

What I have realised from this thread, is that I could challenge more posters to be honest. But I will probably just carry on ignoring and hope they go away.

Triflenot · 03/01/2023 22:00

One other thing I have noticed over recent months on MN is the increase in verbal hand grenades, where an OP will roll in a smouldering post about eg teachers, NHS staff or similar, which then ignites into a rolling thread of righteous indignation from those who have an interest.

And then opposing ‘agitators’ will drop in inflammatory comments, which swirl amongst the thread to encourage others to pick up their pitchforks.

It’s almost as if there is some manipulation going on.

Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 03/01/2023 22:06

Yes. I think any Internet forum ends up with some people on it who are either harsh or down right unkind. I think people say things online that they wouldn’t in real life. That can be a good things, but also a bad thing.

I have noticed a tendacy, sometimes, for posters to intentionally take things the wrong way or to twist what someone has written to make it sound like they’ve said something they haven’t and make a massive drama from literally nothing. like someone will say “ I really don’t like dogs and would never have one”, then someone would reply “ why do you hate dogs, why don’t you think any people should own dogs” ( that’s a terrible example but I didn’t want to use any real examples. )

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/01/2023 22:22

IMO some people come on forums largely so they can have a safe, anonymous, nasty go at other people. They’re pathetic.
From experience, you get some on every forum.

I think irony just died on this thread

Exactly what I was thinking!!

Exactly! I’m so glad at least someone else agrees with me!

I also agree with that assessment, it’s so tiring. Feel free to disagree but geez don’t monopolise the thread.
