Made to sit on the floor on Christmas Day

Not sure if I’m overreacting but I just feel so hurt. When I spend Christmas Day at my parents there aren’t enough chairs in the living room for everyone. This year I was left sitting on the floor all day. I’d hoped when we all went back into the living room after Christmas lunch I might get the opportunity to sit on the sofa but everyone else took their seats where they were previously leaving me to sit on the floor again. My sister, brother in law, mother, and aunt are all fit and able bodied and just as capable as me as sitting on the floor, but they just kept the comfortable seats for themselves all day. AIBU to feel so disappointed that on Christmas Day my family were just happy to see me on the floor all day?

Did you get some cushions or a blanket - did no one offer you a seat?

SunshineAndFizz · 25/12/2022 20:12

Why didn't you say something? In my family I'd be like "oi time to swap seats sis".

amicissimma · 25/12/2022 20:12

Isn't the standard procedure in those circumstances to grab a dining chair and bring it into the living room?

cherrycheesecakesouffle · 25/12/2022 20:12

Did you say anything? Doesn’t sound like it. Why not instead of quiet you seething about it

Sparklesocks · 25/12/2022 20:14

That is annoying. Did you say something like ‘would anyone mind swapping with me, I’ve been sitting on the floor a while now and my back needs a break?’

UpsyDaisysarmpit · 25/12/2022 20:14

YANBU. But did you ask them?

LadyWithLapdog · 25/12/2022 20:14

Why didn’t you speak up? You could have kicked your sister off the sofa.

FriteFuaite · 25/12/2022 20:14

What did you say to them? Are you the youngest? Has this happened before?

I just can't imagine this happening and nobody saying anything 🤣

90yomakeuproom · 25/12/2022 20:14

Maybe I'm gobby in my family, but again, like a pp said I'd say oi you lot, time to swap someone!

Yes, you'd normally bring a chair through from elsewhere. I wouldn't sit on the floor all day.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 25/12/2022 20:15

YABU for not actually using your big girl words.

Thenose · 25/12/2022 20:15

Why didn't you get a dining chair?

FuzzyPuffling · 25/12/2022 20:15

Maybe your sister or BIL could have swapped, but I wouldn't expect it of your mother or aunt.

LadyFannyButton · 25/12/2022 20:15

I’m assuming your DM & aunt are quite a bit older than you so would expect for a younger person to sit on the floor.
Sis & BIL presumably sitting next to each other? Are you the youngest?

As pp said, why didn’t you just get a chair from the table & bring it through?

SummaLuvin · 25/12/2022 20:16

How selfish! Do your whole family have visual impairments that would have prevented them seeing you sitting on the floor? That’s the only excuse…

Workinghardeveryday · 25/12/2022 20:17

I agree with @SeatlessAtChristmas .

its not just about she had to sit on the floor, it’s the fact they were happy to let her and not care enough to offer to swap.

Selfish. I would have offered, it’s extremely rude not to offer to swap after a while

CanadianJohn · 25/12/2022 20:17

Yup, you should have said something.

I'm not looking forward to hosting the family tomorrow. Normally there's just my wife and I, but we will have 10 visitors, all adults, in our small house. Even with the dining chairs we will be playing musical chairs.

parrotonmyshoulder · 25/12/2022 20:18

How old are you? This used to happen all the time with me and DH at my in laws. DH made a point of saying something every time but it made no difference. We very rarely go now.

Workinghardeveryday · 25/12/2022 20:20

@SeatlessAtChristmas forgot to say, I will be you tomorrow, or sat at table from 12-9!!! It hurts my back and my arse goes numb.

There also aren’t enough chairs at mil house, last time I was standing, so was dp ☹️

steff13 · 25/12/2022 20:21

Where did you eat lunch? Could you not have brought one of those chairs into the room? That seems like standard practice. If you were at your parents' house maybe they expected you to bring a chair into the living room from the dining room or wherever if you wanted one.

AreOttersJustWetCats · 25/12/2022 20:21

So you didn't say anything? You didn't bring a dining table through? Why so passive?

Dadadaa · 25/12/2022 20:22

Just move into a seat when one of them goes to the toilet!

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 25/12/2022 20:24

This happens to me all the time but I am a dog.

Yes, why didn't this happen?

Cherryana · 25/12/2022 20:28

This has happened to me before and I have to have a hip replacement. I expected my ds's daughter to get up for me and she didn't. I was so shocked at the time - I just went along with it. Your post has helped me because I am going tomorrow and now I am more prepared with what I will say tomorrow, if it happens again. So thanks, your pain, might be my gain!
