Made to sit on the floor on Christmas Day

Not sure if I’m overreacting but I just feel so hurt. When I spend Christmas Day at my parents there aren’t enough chairs in the living room for everyone. This year I was left sitting on the floor all day. I’d hoped when we all went back into the living room after Christmas lunch I might get the opportunity to sit on the sofa but everyone else took their seats where they were previously leaving me to sit on the floor again. My sister, brother in law, mother, and aunt are all fit and able bodied and just as capable as me as sitting on the floor, but they just kept the comfortable seats for themselves all day. AIBU to feel so disappointed that on Christmas Day my family were just happy to see me on the floor all day?

When we have Christmas dinner at my grandparents house we never have enough space for everyone to be in a chair. Usually 3 of us have to be on the floor. When you leave the room for a drink/ toilet it’s every person for themselves. It’s a running joke/ tradition as my brother and uncle are very crafty and always seem to bag the armchairs and keep them most of the day

Cm078 · 25/12/2022 21:14

My lounge used to be like this. I had too many people round one year and we sort of took it in turns, "come on, someone elses turn on the floor now"
Yanbu but could you not have told someone to swap?

Course you do 🙄 I bet you’re on the floor right now

I'm the same as @MargaretThursday . I'm usually the one sitting in the floor, and refusing offers of a seat. If the floor is carpeted I'm perfectly comfortable. So there's no need to be snarky.

Untitledsquatboulder · 25/12/2022 21:20

Poor OP. If only you had a voice.

roarfeckingroarr · 25/12/2022 21:23

Sounds a bit petty and easily avoided by asking someone or taking a seat when someone moved for whatever reason.

I'm nearly full term pregnant and my 2 year old made me sit on the floor on and off today to build duplo things - so I do have some sympathy for the lack of comfort.

Are you the youngest?

StClare101 · 25/12/2022 21:23

Nobody made you be such a martyr. For gods sake grow a backbone and speak up next time!

ZiggZagg · 25/12/2022 21:24

We have a rule in our family "on your feet, lose your seat". We just jump in a space when someone goes the toilet/ to get a drink so YABU for not just taking an empty seat!

Whee · 25/12/2022 21:28

As if sitting on a dining chair is preferable to sitting on the floor... At least on the floor you can slouch around. Even if she'd brought through a dining room chair, that's clearly less comfy than the sofa so someone should have swapped. But agree OP should have been more assertive.

I also like sitting on the floor - it's actually a lot better for you anyway - sitting on furniture causes a lot of the problems we have with our bodies (lack of flexibility, lower cross syndrome, etc). The more you do it, the easier and comfier it gets.

LightGreenDot · 25/12/2022 21:30

How many of you saying it's down to OP and she should have said something would have let a family member sit on the floor all day without checking they were comfortable and offering to help get extra chairs/cushions or swap around?

DonutCrossMeIEatYou · 25/12/2022 21:31

I just spent the day sat on floor with DSC. Didn’t feel like a big deal tbh. But it’s all about the vibes I think and I could have had a seat if I’d asked.

I am 🤣
We're playing a card game and the children are on the sofa and me and dh on the floor. 🤣

Honestly, in my family the floor sitter would have said something. It's a bit weirdly martyrish to hope someone offers you their seat.

KickHimInTheCrotch · 25/12/2022 21:38

As soon as someone around your age or younger gets up to go to the loo/get a, refill/check on the kids etc you jump into their seat - easy. No way would my cousins and I be expecting to always return to the same spot on a busy house while one person sits on the floor in a strop. It'd be like musical chairs.

Adviceneeded200 · 25/12/2022 21:41

I can't understand why you didn't say something? I'm socially awkward and would be tounge tied at an event, but with family I'd soon kick my brother off and make him share! (I don't have a sister).

Even at an event I'd be looking for an alternative- chair brought in the room from.somewhere else or cushions on the floor

JoyeuxNarwhal · 25/12/2022 21:41

If you didn't raise any objections they probably assumed you were happy with it.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 25/12/2022 21:42

Through a great many gatherings at my inlaws where they had 6 seats, 5 kids of their own and 22 grandchildren, we have the fine tradition of "on yer feet, lose your seat".

HoppingPavlova · 25/12/2022 21:42

You either bring in a chair from the dining room, go and find an emergency chair (according to Peter Kay they're in back bedroom upstairs!), you ask someone to swap or if all of that fails, you wait for someone to go to the loo and take their chair. No need to suffer in silence.

This. If one one of my (adult) children was sitting on the lounge room floor, I’d think that was their preference as I would assume they would have gone and gotten a dining chair, outdoor chair or if these were all taken, a camping chair, if they wanted a seat. They are adults and can manage getting these things if wanted/needed. Otherwise I’d assume the floor was what they wanted.

woodhill · 25/12/2022 21:44

Some of my adult dc were on the floor today.

It's difficult when there isn't enough seating

ZeroFuchsGiven · 25/12/2022 20:15

YABU for not actually using your big girl words.

YUBU for being patronising. Are you always so unimaginative?

gogohmm · 25/12/2022 21:45

We bring in chairs from the dining room, nobody who has lots of guests has enough chairs

Are you ok?
Your last adjective seems like it could fit you well tbh …

I think someone gave you a mouth. Probably something we're all regretting.

Bimblybomeyelash · 25/12/2022 21:50

How were you made to sit on the floor? In my house it’s constant musical chairs. As soon as one person gets up, another slips into take their place.
