Host fell asleep at party 😴

I don’t know how to feel about this! I was invited to a girl’s night get together at a friend’s place, from about 7.30pm til late. I was a little late (I let the group know ahead of time) so got there about 8pm. Turns out one friend was sick and the other had an unexpected online meeting so she couldn’t make it either. It was just myself and the friend host. She wasn’t around when I got there, so I chatted with her DS for a while, and watched tv. She came downstairs about half hr later,
apologised and I made nothing of it. The food was all set up on the table buffet setting, so we got stuck in. I hadn’t even finished my plate of food and I looked up, host was sleeping. Throughout the eve she kept falling asleep mid conversation. I should have just got up and left, I’m still wondering why I didn’t. I felt uncomfortable knowing the host is sleepy and yet I thought getting up and leaving would make it further uncomfortable. For purposes of context, we’re not very close friends, just getting to know a new group of friends.

I would think she had a health problem. Most people don’t fall asleep at their dinner

Firefightress1 · 13/12/2022 22:47

The poor host, everyone cancelled but you. She was probably disappointed

FlissyPaps · 13/12/2022 22:48

Bless her, she must have been exhausted, or ill.

I would have politely told her (when she woke up) “You seem absolutely exhausted and look like you are in need of a rest. I’ll get going so you can go to bed”.

nobird · 13/12/2022 22:50

Sounds like she was possibly not feeling great. Or maybe early in a pregnancy?

Just send a friendly message and ask if she’s ok.

quinceh · 13/12/2022 22:53

As someone who’s fallen asleep in similar contexts, I agree with @FlissyPaps that leaving would have been the best thing to do. She presumably couldn’t help it, for whatever reason. Sounds like a very disappointing evening tho! It’s a bit weird that she was upstairs for half an hour.

swappingwellies · 13/12/2022 22:54

@nobird yes probably should, she has had some stressful news last month

Was she drunk?

swappingwellies · 13/12/2022 22:57

@quinceh yes she was on the phone dealing with something. She did apologise for that… I think the falling asleep was beyond her control 😟

BrutusMcDogface · 13/12/2022 22:58

I definitely would have left! Poor woman. She’s either beyond exhausted or isn’t feeling well.

swappingwellies · 13/12/2022 22:58

@Allthecatsandcosyblankets she didn’t seem drunk. Just sleepy

OP posts:
FlamingoSocks · 13/12/2022 22:59

She’d taken something.

swappingwellies · 13/12/2022 23:00

@Firefightress1 charming! I do hope a person who is invited and shows up isn’t a disappointment 😃

This happened to me once when a new boyfriend invited me for a home cooked Valentines dinner. He was a bit slow bringing out the second course, and when I checked up on him he was asleep on the kitchen floor. That relationship didn’t go much further 😅

swappingwellies · 13/12/2022 23:06

I fall asleep watching tv, guaranteed but never at 8pm. She’s prob stressed and exhausted. I feel bad for not leaving earlier though 🙃

Poor thing. There will be a reason. Write it off as an odd evening and if you like her as a person, don't take in personally and make the next catch up a coffee morning!

swappingwellies · 13/12/2022 23:08

@warmeduppizza 😂 he definitely had a few too many glasses of wine

i voted yabu because honestly i would have just politely left. She wasn't there when you arrived and left you with her son - how old? for half and hour. and then she kept falling asleep so was either ill or exhausted but you dragged it out. Did she say something each time she woke up?

swappingwellies · 13/12/2022 23:12

@KaleToChristmas yes you’re prob right. She’s away for Christmas so I’ll offer her a coffee and catch up. I don’t want to pry so can’t ask her, but she did mention she’s received some stressful news last month.

Wait, how long did you stay after she started falling asleep?

God yes the early pregnancy tiredness, I fell
asleep at my desk! My lovely boss sent me home that day’

HeyThereDelilah1 · 13/12/2022 23:14

I take Valium for flying (horrible phobia) and can’t stay awake whilst on it - I only take it if im travelling with my husband. Maybe if your friend is stressed she’s taken something similar but misjudged the right amount?

swappingwellies · 13/12/2022 23:14

@SleepingStandingUp no she just went straight back into conversation as if it hadn’t happened. Her DS is young adult. He was heading out for the night. I wasn’t sure what to make of it. But you’re right I should have left.

Sorry that last sentence cracked me up for some reason. It's like some sort of ancient sit com.

Don’t feel bad! She was probably really happy that you were the only one not to cancel after she went to effort to make up the buffet.

Don’t take it to heart either, you personally wouldn’t have made her fall asleep it’ll most definitely be down to stress/illness. She probably though she’d be okay but wasn’t unfortunately.

She’d taken something.

Wow, were you there?
