Are so pedantic, literal and joyless?

Other sites aren't like this Confused

There are a lot of very unhappy people on here.

MammaWeasel · 04/12/2022 08:56

@Tiredallofthetime first post has nailed it

pumpkincivilisation · 04/12/2022 09:00

I'd add , plus, bullies and self- righteous folk. No debate is possible, you will be bullied to death...

heldinadream · 04/12/2022 09:00

Because inaccurate, weirdly metaphorical and happy clappy is a pain in the arse.

PonyPatter44 · 04/12/2022 09:02

There is actually a reason, and if you read a lot of threads over a period of time, you'll probably figure it out. I'm certainly not going to say it out loud because I'll probably be banned, or at least hounded forever by precisely those people!

Fairislefandango · 04/12/2022 09:04

MN has a wide variety of members. There are pedantic, literal and joyless people in the world so it would be odd if they weren't represented on MN.

But also, lots of people use MN as a source of advice on problems in their lives, some of them pretty serious and upsetting, so it's not terribly surprising that a lot of posts don't sound exactly joy-filled. Some of the other tooics discussed are quite serious too. But there's plenty of trivial fluff and humour imo.

Sorry if my response wasn't fun enough Grin

I was thinking more about the posters that reply to op's.

Tiredallofthetime · 04/12/2022 09:10

I for one know exactly what you mean.

It is the sort of ‘I’m looking for advice on my child’s sleep, he wakes at 5 every day’ and the first response is ‘so you can’t be bothered getting up for your own kid Confused

What is it tell me?! 🤣
I don't think the majority of people are like that at all, there's lots of upbeat people too & I see lots of sound advice on here amongst all the rest described in the original post.

atsusnaiboyz · 04/12/2022 09:14

Why are you conflating pedantic and literal with joyless?

I'm autistic. I'm often called pedantic in real life and I know I'm literal. That does not mean I'm joyless.

Buy those few posters manage to ruin most threads.

OP posts:
JustAnotherHappyFatty · 04/12/2022 09:16

I'm hopefully not like that but......there are so many threads on here that could be solved by a simple Google search. There are many threads where the OP asks for advice and then disputes for hours why even the most sensible options won't work for them.
There are loads of troll posts and I think some genuine posters get mixed up I those as well.
There are also joyless, pedantic people in real life that use the site!
Maybe a bit of compassion fatigue thrown into the mix as well.

Intrigued
is it that they have kids so are constantly pissed off? <smug childfree grin>

Anothernamechange1010 · 04/12/2022 09:17

I would love to know the answer to this too!

I can't believe some of the nasty things people write, they can't be such dickheads IRL, surely!?

And the ones who come on just to comment about spelling or grammar...fgs fuck off 😂

ohyouknowwhatshername · 04/12/2022 09:28

Not only are people anonymous on here, but it's really easy to keep changing your username. I think if people are in a bad mood, it's too easy to write something nasty, then name change and go back to being as nice as pie on the next thread.

ChristmasJoysuckers · 04/12/2022 09:30

@PonyPatter44

You can name change and simply share your musings.
It's a very annoying cyrpitc post.

Op I find a balance, it depends whose on here because there are many very erudite wonderful posters as well

They're in the minority though. But won't they exist to some degree on every site?

Still preferable to fluffier sites like Netmums. Is that still going.

Ivyblu · 04/12/2022 09:34

I think sometimes we need to just unfollow a thread sometimes. We often can't agree to disagree

Multiple people pile on and repeated get at one person, despite it already been said.

Dunno, but gumtree forums weren't like this. 😁 If you know, you know.

There are also a lot if whingy tell-tales here too. I can't abide the reporting of posts simply because someone doesn't like the difference of opinion.

OP posts:
Outfor150 · 04/12/2022 09:35

I don’t think it is pedantic, literal and joyless particularly. I’m not sure what pedantry and literalism have to do with joy, or the lack of it, though.

I'd disagree. I'd say most of the internet is like that and as MN gets larger and more anonymous it is becoming more like the rest of the internet.

atsusnaiboyz · 04/12/2022 09:36

Can you please tell me how pedantic and literal equate to joyless. Thanks.

Anothernamechange1010 · 04/12/2022 09:37

I see you've managed to attract a couple of the very posters you're asking about 🤗
I'm loving the irony of their responses 😅

atsusnaiboyz · 04/12/2022 09:38

I'm autistic I'm pedanticand literal as a feature of my autism. That does not make me joyless
