I don't disagree but I think that sometimes there is an expectation that MN will be full of nice people. It's no better or worse in that sense than lot of social media sites. Some people are nice , some are not. Some people are having a bad day and the anonymity of MN allows them to vent at others.

OutFortheBirds · 04/12/2022 11:20

I think sometimes we need to just unfollow a thread sometimes. We often can't agree to disagree

Multiple people pile on and repeated get at one person, despite it already been said.

I’ve seen this and also experienced this and I find it sad. Especially when you have people coming for here help and a bit of company. In one currently active thread, a woman talks about a possible domestic abuse event from her husband and her fear of miscarrying, and in the off-chance mentions she sleep-training her current baby. A know-it-all poster could think of nothing else but to start slagging off her parenting. Kicking folk while they’re down. It’s just horrid sometimes.

I once came for advice about a family issue. It wasn’t life or death, but had me down and I came seeking a bit of impartiality and support. I did get that from the majority of posters, but there was a fair share of smart-arses and even folk calling me a fake a/c and trying to convince others as such… I just asked MN to delete it in the end. Wasn’t worth it.

I do think there are a few crappy people on here, and they work in groups, but some really fab ones too.

I've had posts deleted. For no reason at all, except was in disagreement with the pack.

Same here. Mn mods have deleted whole threads because of them. I feel like I'm gagged. Have had messages on the deleted thread like we are not sure the poster is genuine. The gang rubbing their hands , got what they wanted. Me feeling like I done something wrong when I did not.

Bettybooboo13 · 04/12/2022 11:22

Totally agree with op. New to this site and been put off very early on posting or even commenting. Life is hard enough without enduring this.

It’s a natural occurrence on forums like this, usually because of the type of person who will typically use a forum in the first place.

A lot of posters on here are lonely, have no friends, are shut ins, hate their partners, aren’t well paid, don’t have good careers and take that out online.

It’s naturally selecting, as most regular users here will be regulars for a reason, because they tend not to have anyone irl to socialise with or discuss issues with.

It’s seen across many subjects on here, people who hate weddings, hen do’s, baby showers, holidays, posters who can’t believe people could invite more than 30 people to a birthday party, people who can’t believe there are many people in professional roles who are paid a lot but aren’t expected to be behind a desk from 9-5. This type of person won’t have many friends in real life so have to resort to online interactions.

Id say 80% of regular posters on here will fall into this category, as most would ask their friends or family for advice.

Totally agree.

There was a thread recently where everyone replied saying they were the weird kid at school.

AccioChocolate · 04/12/2022 11:23

I've been deleted and later apologized to actually. My response was actually quite polite and in response to a xenophobic poster implying they couldn't hold a conversation with me if I didn't first tell them my home country.

That poster was then deleted.

Vitalsigning · 04/12/2022 11:23

Sparklingbrook · 04/12/2022 11:15

If they're getting 'too many reports' then there has to be a reason for that, so it's more likely the whole thread will go for turning into a bunfight or not helping anyone.

Oh sweet summer child

Some people will mass report a pretty tame post because they don’t like what is said, it’s been seen many times on here. In those cases the original author of the comment has to contact MN to get it reinstated (many are)

I had a post deleted once for being sarcastic apparently if it had had a smiley on the end it would have been ok. You have to be careful out there.

Angelofthenortheast · 04/12/2022 11:28

You're right loads of people do seem really joyless on here. If anyone has any tips for other women's forums that aren't as joyless but still witty please let me know!

donquixotedelamancha · 04/12/2022 11:28

I never understand why some people constantly complain that everyone else is MNing wrong, rather than just leaving if it's that bad.

I also find the idea that MN is worse than other anonymous sites really odd. Twitter is far worse than here.

Yep totally agree . I just don't understand why mods are not seeing this happen.

Boooooot · 04/12/2022 11:34

It’s a shame. It’s definitely not like it was 10 years ago.
There are a lot of bitter people on here.
Theres also a lot of people with autism on here, which isn’t a criticism, I’m currently going through assessment myself. But I think it does explain the literalness and pedantry.

Sparklingbrook · 04/12/2022 11:35

No,on the wrong threads, I have loads of topics hidden and hide a lot of threads as I go.

Yep totally agree . I just don't understand why mods are not seeing this happen.

They see it but don’t seem to want to bother to do anything to fix the issue, as that would cost money - mods would have to be actively monitoring all reports and assessing manually, which would require staff not just volunteers etc.

I think the mods do manually assess? At least during the day? I've received emails saying how something has been dealt with.

Not that I report much!

thiccapricot · 04/12/2022 11:57

So many nasty posts on this site. I’m not talking about criticism - the criticism on here is usually very valid. More just extremely snarky responses to people who are clearly struggling that offer absolutely no support at all. Someone on here was going through an extremely emotional and rough time the other day - can’t remember what the post was about - and one of the first responses was ‘so what’s your Aibu?’ Just shocking. Have some empathy

lollipoprainbow · 04/12/2022 11:58

Because it's a forum where we can let out our miserable feelings and get advice and solidarity from others. Maybe we have no one to say it to in real life. Sorry if we aren't all cheerful and happy some of us have very difficult lives.

There are some, but not many.

Hence why they also employ a tactic of auto removing any posts or comments that get over a certain amount of reports. It doesn’t help that there often tends to be a hive mind on some posts on AIBU in particular, so sometimes a post or comment will get lots of reports, but break no rules. But they’re auto removed unless the poster asks for it to be reinstated

I was thinking more about the posters that reply to op's.

I’ve noticed that the first reply sets the tone for the rest of thread.

I like mn but I have seen an increase in unhelpful goady posts.

i mainly read tv addicts and when I end up in aibu it is a shock!
