Goodbye Monarchy, as is

that’s it really. I’m not fussed about the ‘king’ -
happy to downgrade the entire system.
the jewels, the palaces, the changing of the guard belong to the country, and/or people … if Charles buggers off we keep all the tourist attractions, and all that people say makes the royal family worth while ££
now the Queen has gone, the ‘firm’ needs to go
done with them. AIBU?

You didn't give the option to vote but yes. YABU. If you don't like the monarchy, that's your entitlement but it's here to stay.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 14/11/2022 00:09

Yep, yabu.

No it isn’t. Majority of the young don’t want them.

Flanjango · 14/11/2022 00:11

Yanbu. Times change. The monarchy is defunct as an entity. They have zero power constitutionally and are a throwback to empire (which is a while world of bad history). The buildings and chattels bring in tourists, the actual family do not.

MightyAtlantic · 14/11/2022 00:15

YANBU. In this day and age, I don't understand how anyone can look at their nine year old child and think, yes that's what we want for him, a life of duty and public scrutiny.

Even if that's true, so what? Unless they're planning a coup it makes zero difference.

YANBU
the monarchy was hanging on because people loved the queen. Charles is a very mediocre personality and will not sustain the affection that she did and nor will William. It's dying a slow death.

PurpleButterflyWings · 14/11/2022 00:26

The Royals are not going anywhere. Sorry and all that @Poopoolittlerabbit 😢 Don't cry too much now.

Olios · 14/11/2022 00:34

YABU. The royal family is part of national identity and culture which contributes to people's well-being and sense of belonging. I actually think the constant attack on identity and culture is partially responsible for deteriorating mental health in general as it's exhausting and depressing to hear. Nobody alive today is responsible for the atrocities of the colonial era and just because something is a 'throwback to empire' doesn't mean it has to be eradicated. The royal family have modern roles and the king is also an advocate for the environment on a platform where frankly we need as many voices as possible for the benefit of young people.

Poopoolittlerabbit · 14/11/2022 00:50

‘Unless they're planning a coup it makes zero difference.’

the money we spend on them aside… ( and WE will not lose the palaces, or the Crown Jewels or our military or any thing else that brings in €£$ tourism’ )

an UNELECTED man gets to meet with the PM weekly to share his opinions on the country, politics, and whatever else… and SIGNS are our laws into being.

not right. Because he was born into a family.
not right.

It will be interesting to see the sale of Harry's book. I think a lot of people ARE very interested in the RF

Wow. Really? And if you’re Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish and have an other idea of what ‘National identity’ might be? Outside of the ENGLISH royal family? And what of the myriad of cultures and heritages that make up Britain and our identity?

I thought this was interesting, if you fancy a read, OP: yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2022/09/17/monarchy-sees-minor-improvement-public-opinion

The monarchy is much less popular with young people than older, but still much more popular than one might expect.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 14/11/2022 01:23

The elected lot are far worse direct your ire at them.

Cwcwbird · 14/11/2022 01:24

Well there you go, there's the source people were asking for 53% of 18-24 Yr olds don't want them. And up until the Queen died that figure was 70%

I wish we'd get rid of them but I don't think it'll ever happen unfortunately

Renter77 · 14/11/2022 01:28

YANBU. It’s time to stop supporting them and time for the charade to end. Having a royal family also perpetuates a class system that is quite shameful in 2022.

I did have a bit of affection for the Queen, but I have none for any member of the royal family - I actively dislike most of them.

Poopoolittlerabbit · 14/11/2022 01:35

‘The elected lot are far worse direct your ire at them.’

no, because I expect better than a race to the bottom.

and I got to VOTE for the elected. It didn’t go how I might have preferred but at least I got a day in it.
I did not get a choice in an election for ‘king’ - I mean, king - seriously? Are we living in a Ham Christian Andersen story book? Is the Big bad wolf going to huff and puff ?
some over privileged prat is going to sign our laws? And we’re going to pay him, and his family, and his numerous hanger on ,
and the woman who used to be his mistress?

The royal family are huge part of the history of our islands whether you like it or not ... also immigration doesn't change that...?! New cultures and identities add to the interest and culture of the country and should be celebrated as part of modern identity. It isn't a case of choosing one or the other.

Based upon you line of thought ... What about the families that have inherited former clan estates in Scotland? Should the descendants give up their estates so not to offend the descendants of a former rival clan that they fought and who now live in the former clan lands? How far do you take it?

Kabbalah · 14/11/2022 02:01

This^^

You might be happy with a President Johnson or a President Blair, but I prefer King Charles III and a constitutional monarchy any day.

Don't knock what you don't understand!
