that’s it really. I’m not fussed about the ‘king’ -
happy to downgrade the entire system.
the jewels, the palaces, the changing of the guard belong to the country, and/or people … if Charles buggers off we keep all the tourist attractions, and all that people say makes the royal family worth while ££
now the Queen has gone, the ‘firm’ needs to go
done with them. AIBU?

I'm not a royalist.

Over recent years, people I know have said that things won't be the same when the Queen dies. It doesn't seem very different since her death!

Visitors don't come to the UK to see the Royal Family (they're not going to meet them) but come to look at the buildings etc.

Stop the Royal Family and open up the palaces to the public so they are self funding!

You can't vote politicians out. The one that gets voted out just gets replaced by another politician. And politicians, by the very nature of the type of person that chooses to become a politican, cannot be trusted. Royalty are here for good. They have no choice in the matter. If the current monarch makes a mess of things, it's their own flesh and blood who have to deal with the consequences. Politicians just make a mess of things and then piss off abroad to lucrative speaking engagements.

So because democracy isn’t perfect, it should be dismissed altogether and people should have no say? Instead of voting for our representatives, we just cross our fingers and hope we get lucky?

sounds great.

As I said, I don’t think the monarchy will last. No idea as to the expiry date, but it does have one.

I don't think there's a better option than what we currently have with a monarch as the head of state and politicians working underneath. It's the least worst option.

fUNNYfACE36 · 22/01/2023 14:33

The monarchy has survived much worse

EarthPunchingBack · 22/01/2023 15:49

@Florenz of course it isn’t the least worst option. The Irish system is democratic and infinitely cheaper. Not hard to find better alternatives. The status quo is just the lazy option.

Florenz · 22/01/2023 15:53

But is Ireland any better off as a result. There are a lot of problems in Ireland.

I'm not opposed to changing the system but it has to be to something better, not just change for the sake of change.

What kind of problems are you talking about?

Is it really cheaper when the cost of regular elections and the cost of maintaining numerous very old buildings is factored in? I somehow doubt it. I think a proper unbiased cost analysis would show the cost to be pretty much the same.

A much more pertinent argument is that so much of our society is entwined with the monarchy. The judiciary, the armed forces and numerous other institutions are based on it. We can’t even extricate ourselves from our 60 odd year relationship with the EU because it’s so complex, how difficult would undoing 1,000 years of history be? And what would it achieve? Nothing much really.
