Goodbye Monarchy, as is

that’s it really. I’m not fussed about the ‘king’ -
happy to downgrade the entire system.
the jewels, the palaces, the changing of the guard belong to the country, and/or people … if Charles buggers off we keep all the tourist attractions, and all that people say makes the royal family worth while ££
now the Queen has gone, the ‘firm’ needs to go
done with them. AIBU?

The monarchy and the Royal Family are not the same thing. If we abolished the monarchy, the Royal Family would still exist, probably richer than now. Germany hasn't had a monarchy for over 100 years but there are still people going around calling themselves Prince so and so.

Abolishing the monarchy would require an agreed system in its place. Just voting for a republic would be as ridiculous as voting for Brexit with no plan in place was. Republics and presidency exist in lots of forms.

Presidents still cost money.

Young people may not support the monarchy as much as older people but will probably change as they age. All views matter not just those of people under 35.

Monarchy is not a relic of empire. It's an ancient system, not just here but worldwide.

I wouldn't invent a monarchy if I was starting from scratch but it's here, it works and atm imo we would be much worse off without it.

Poopoolittlerabbit · 14/11/2022 07:28

‘The Royals are not going anywhere. Sorry and all that @Poopoolittlerabbit 😢 Don't cry too much now.’

Did I say they were? Unfortunate Prince Andrew, the weird, non-sweating paedophile, is here to stay as are most of the other free loaders… but there’s many steps between having a figure head and having an unelected., toff wielding the kind of political power Charlie boy does.

People always cite tourism as the main source of income, it’s the massive property estate that does and most of that money goes straight to the government who then give about 20% of it back to fund them. If it was all sold off, the amount of money we’d get from new private owners would be 40% max as it would be subject to normal taxation rules.

TheKeatingFive · 14/11/2022 07:29

Well I don't think anyones thinking of exterminating them, just stripping them of powers. And they absolutely wouldn't be richer than they are now, of the sovereign grant, Duchies and royal estates were taken away from them.

MyLovelyPen · 14/11/2022 07:29

www.republic.org.uk/

@Mixednuts574 the link above takes you to the campaign group for the abolition of the monarchy. It makes for some interesting reading.

Florenz · 14/11/2022 07:30

The last time we had a public vote it gave us Brexit and people are still moaning that people didn't understand what they were voted for, people voted the "wrong" way, against their own interests, etc etc.

I'd be happy for us to have regular referendums on all kinds of things but they don't always go the way you want them to go, and people have to be willing to accept that.

TodayInahurry · 14/11/2022 07:30

A lot of nasty ant royalists, the Royal Family is fine, leave them away. The youth are being brainwashed at university to hate everything about the UK

TheKeatingFive · 14/11/2022 07:31

Why would it need to be sold off? It would go straight to the public purse. It's managed by an independent body as it stands.

ShellsOnTheBeach · 14/11/2022 00:53

the king is also an advocate for the environment on a platform where frankly we need as many voices as possible for the benefit of young people.

Precisely

This is my residual hope. But in all honesty with all their /his wealth and land he is one of the few people whose personal actions could make a tangible difference and yet i can't see any evidence of changes there. It would be good to see him very dramatically put his money where his mouth is.

MyLovelyPen · 14/11/2022 07:32

@Lisbeth50 in what way does it “work” and how would we be worse off without it?

These phrases are often used in terms of the monarchy and they baffle me.

MyLovelyPen · 14/11/2022 07:33

@TodayInahurry why are we “nasty anti royalists”? 😂 And thanks for referring to us as youth but I’m very much the wrong side of middle age and have been a Republican all my life.

Poopoolittlerabbit · 14/11/2022 07:34

‘A lot of nasty ant royalists, the Royal Family is fine, leave them away. The youth are being brainwashed at university to hate everything about the UK’

yes of course. Education is the issue! Now I see it. If we just left the unwashed masses uneducated and ignorant, and happy with their station in life, and have the upper classes and Royals rule everything just like in the good old days, the U.K. would be a better place?

Except, there does seem to be a lot of old Etonians running the country at the moment, and it’s not going that well….

Can't say that I care either way tbh. I'm betting though OP is an Indy supporter

Hattie72 · 14/11/2022 07:37

I don’t think walking around with crowns on your head or driving around in pumpkins don’t have a place anymore and just look ridiculous to me. Mostly I feel sorry for Kate and William and their kids. I would hate to be them. Kate having to smile and look enthusiastic all the time. It must be like living in a luxurious prison.

Poopoolittlerabbit · 14/11/2022 07:37

‘If we abolished the monarchy, the Royal Family would still exist, probably richer than now.’

And? They can live off their personal millions for the rest of their days. Would be nice if they were taxed properly, didn’t get a single penny of tax payer money, and didn’t get to meet with our PM to share their political views, and didn’t have the right to sign our laws into existence.
they can trot about on ponies and ski to their hearts content. They could still do charity work, give them something g to get out of bed for.

My word, so sad to see all these turkeys voting for Christmas because it's 'so important for national identity'. Other countries do fine without a hereditary system of wealth that props up the class system and invades every area of our society. I find the whole charade quite disgusting. Yes to the replacement of the house of lords, and yes to the abolition of the monarchy and yes, naturally, to Scottish Independence.

As the mother of two daughters at university, I can safely say that the "youth" are more than capable of thinking for themselves and perhaps we would do well to listen to their opinions. Perhaps they have good reason to be discontented with society as it is shaped now? They see privilege embedded at its heart, wealth and status held up to be all that is good, maybe they want to see a different set of values introduced when they come of age?

LaGioconda · 14/11/2022 07:40

Poopoolittlerabbit · 14/11/2022 00:50

‘Unless they're planning a coup it makes zero difference.’

the money we spend on them aside… ( and WE will not lose the palaces, or the Crown Jewels or our military or any thing else that brings in €£$ tourism’ )

an UNELECTED man gets to meet with the PM weekly to share his opinions on the country, politics, and whatever else… and SIGNS are our laws into being.

not right. Because he was born into a family.
not right.

Why does it bother you that the PM meets the king regularly? When it was the queen, the PM had the benefit of the experience of someone who had been a constant for decades, worked with several PMs, met virtually every world leader, etc etc. Now he has the benefit of someone who worked with the Queen for decades and profits from her experience and his own. It can hardly hurt for the. PM to have to account for themselves in this way, and ultimately they don't have to pay any attention to the monarch's opinion if they don't want to.

LakieLady · 14/11/2022 07:41

the king is also an advocate for the environment on a platform where frankly we need as many voices as possible

But he sets a very bad example, flying to places at the drop of a hat, travelling in huge gas-guzzling cars, and I bet the castles and palaces aren't heated by renewable energy.

ThatshallotBaby · 14/11/2022 07:42

I’m 54. I think there should be at the very least a serious overhaul of the Royal family.
Unearned privilege is never a good thing.

In the latest poll only a third of 18-24 year old supported the monarchy. Source

Who cares what they think? Unless they're planning on overthrowing the monarchy, it doesn't matter. Not gonna happen

True, and they're not paying a heap of tax I bet. Tell me what 24-30 think perhaps.
