that’s it really. I’m not fussed about the ‘king’ -
happy to downgrade the entire system.
the jewels, the palaces, the changing of the guard belong to the country, and/or people … if Charles buggers off we keep all the tourist attractions, and all that people say makes the royal family worth while ££
now the Queen has gone, the ‘firm’ needs to go
done with them. AIBU?

‘Why does it bother you that the PM meets the king regularly’

UNELECTED. I don’t care how well informed Charlie is. Or his mother. I’m incredibly well informed on politics, and I have strong opinions about what’s best for the country but no-ones coming to my house once a week for a chat about it.
I’m pretty sure my life experience gives me more in common with most people in the U.K. than someone who still has a valet.

Young people may not support the monarchy as much as older people but will probably change as they age. All views matter not just those of people under 35.

I'm 67, and still a republican! So are many of my friends of similar age.

silverclock222 · 14/11/2022 07:44

@Poopoolittlerabbit yeah right, you're definitely one of Queen nics subjects! @MyLovelyPen because it sounds like the same boring waste of time conversations they spout.

Goady or what !.

And very similar in tone to a post yesterday whinging about religion on Remembrance Sunday.

MyLovelyPen · 14/11/2022 07:46

@silverclock222 I’m English. Weird post. Strange how monarchists on this thread don’t want to debate. But I guess monarchists are not keen on democracy so that makes sense 🤷‍♀️.

cakeorwine · 14/11/2022 07:48

Haven't read the full thread but has President Putin or Trump been mentioned yet?

That's a standard response on here.

Other forms of Heads of State are available.

Actually - the Church of England.

Of which the Monarch is also the Head. And sworn Defender of.

MyLovelyPen · 14/11/2022 07:49

@cakeorwine we had President Blair on page one 😂. Tedious 🙄.

Poopoolittlerabbit · 14/11/2022 07:50

‘Young people may not support the monarchy as much as older people but will probably change as they age. All views matter not just those of people under 35.’

I’m well over that age. The Royal scandals were in full swing even when I was a kid. People questioned the monarchy and its powers too then. In school we debated the pros and cons of the royal family, the House of Lords versus an elected 2nd chamber.
I didn’t think they should have the power they have when I was a teenager and I certainly don’t think they should have it now.
and as for Andrew - protected by his family and privilege- he should be in prison.

I agree time to move on. They are very tenacious though and cling on like barnacles to a rock

TheKeatingFive · 14/11/2022 07:51

I'm blue in the face saying this, but check out the type of people the Irish elect as their president.

I'm sure you Brits are capable of achieving the same.

The Irish presidency is extremely cost effective also

Florenz · 14/11/2022 07:17

I'd rather have a King than a politician as head of state.

I don't see the monarchy going away any time soon.

If there was a referendum I think keeping the monarchy would win in a landslide.

Who says you need a politician?

What is the role of a Head of State?

Not to devise policy. But to uphold the Constitution and ensure that politicians follow it. For example, by trying to prorogue Parliament illegally

Poopoolittlerabbit · 14/11/2022 07:52

‘And very similar in tone to a post yesterday whinging about religion on Remembrance Sunday.’

Haven't seen that, but people are entitled to have and voice their own views even if they differ from yours.
it’s not the same thing though is it? It’s entirely possible to reflect and remember the lives of those who served in wars AND still think that the Monarchy should be stripped of its political powers.

In the latest poll only a third of 18-24 year old supported the monarchy. Source

18-24 year olds? Because they’re obviously the most well informed and rational age group aren’t they? 🤔

Mixednuts574 · 14/11/2022 07:55

Florenz · 14/11/2022 07:30

The last time we had a public vote it gave us Brexit and people are still moaning that people didn't understand what they were voted for, people voted the "wrong" way, against their own interests, etc etc.

I'd be happy for us to have regular referendums on all kinds of things but they don't always go the way you want them to go, and people have to be willing to accept that.

Speaking as a republican, I think this is a very important point. Sadly, people do have a tendency to vote to destroy things just for the sake of it and because they can.

And yes the Brexit referendum was an example of how NOT to do things but it must be possible, in this day and age, with the technology available to us, to facilitate proper, informed discussion and come to a conclusion through a series of debates, perhaps like the UN form a resolution?

cakeorwine · 14/11/2022 07:55

At least the Monarchy will not be doing many large scale public celebrations for a while once the Coronation takes place.

Then they can be out of sight, out of mind.

Still, I am sure that the media will obsess about what Kate wears and what Meghan and Harry do and say.

It's the Truman Show.

Our lives are heavily ruled by what eg Elon Musk is saying/ doing , Mark Zuckerberg, bloggers , influencers. Winners of IACGMOOH.
Take away tradition and that’s chiefly what would remain.

👏Exactly.

And looking at the US, China or Russia, where there is no monarchy, they're not exactly role models of humanistic living 😂.

This alongside the 'let's get rid of ceremonies based in Christina traditions' thread are so silly. What shall it all be replaced with? Strictly winners? Or maybe an Insta 'influencer' with a lot of followers could lead the country? Or they could do I'm a politician get me out of here style programme to publicly elect a head of state.

If there is one thing that should be changed is that more money should be invested in education and there should be a clear cap on how long young children and teens spend on their digital devices. Boost music and sports education for all. I'd also be all for introducing national service children. Voluntary of course but with benefits such as discount on future student loan and additional UCAS points.

I really want to see posters who screech 'down with the old', to come and propose what they believe would be a better way of organising things, otherwise it's just juvenile.

Florenz · 14/11/2022 07:57

How do you have an elected head of state that isn't a politician?

I personally wouldn't want a head of state that wanted to be the head of state.

Plus there's all the expense involved, as it's not just the current head of state (politician) that needs to be paid for, but all the former ones as well.

With the way this country votes, I so far never had a politician (local, MP or whatever) who I voted for. The system needs a severe overhaul.

Do you really want an election compaign like in the US? Lots of empty promises and mud slinging? Years of people raising money from lobbyist and promising them a lot for their own pockets? Because that's how direct head of states are votes for. I have enough of the muddy "pay for favour" system we already have.

I want a head of state who is above politics, in Germany, if the President has a political membership, this has to be suspended for the time he serves (max 10 years). Yes, he signs the laws but unless he resigns he basically can't refuse to do so.

You said you don't want to have king or any unelected person. But what do you want?

TheKeatingFive · 14/11/2022 07:58

You speak like these are the only non monarchical countries. There are many liberal democracies where the top tier power and privilege is not reserved for those born into it

It was my thread.

A discussion about the hold the Church of England has in the UK, despite over half the country not being religious.

Just like the hold the Monarchy has in this country.

And our National Anthem - God save the King.

Not very inclusive.

I think YANBU, I’m not massively anti-monarchy but I can’t bring myself to care about Charles. It felt weird singing a whole song just about saving the king at Remembrance Day yesterday as I don’t care that much.

I don't mind the Royal Family. But actually, this struck me during the Remembrance Service yesterday. The whole time I was singing, I was thinking how weird it is to have a NATIONAL anthem that praises one person, and thought about the American and the Canadian anthems, both of which talk about the love for the country as a whole (though admittedly in the context of protecting it from war, only the US coukd mention blood and bombs 🙄). Ours focuses on one person.

Ours was a popular song used to stroke the ego of someone who wanted to steal the throne!

It's the principle.

No one should be born to be Head of State.

It's that simple.

William is next/ George has his life mapped out.

Have you seen the Truman Show?

This is what the UK does to a family. Dictate their life. From birth. Because of duty.

Harry did the right thing.

bloodyplanes · 14/11/2022 08:02

OP you are living on another planet if you think the Monarchy are going anywhere! The vast majority of the uk love them and everything they bring to this island ( as evidenced by the large crowds during the mourning of QE in all of the countries that make up the UK). Look what the " elected elite" have done to this country and then tell us we should be a republic, it's laughable!

Annie232 · 14/11/2022 08:04

YANBU. In this day and age, I don't understand how anyone can look at their nine year old child and think, yes that's what we want for him, a life of duty and public scrutiny.

It’s a lovely life of privilege and very well remunerated. I’m sure most parents want that for their children given the option.
