I think smokers are just so selfish

Not just because of the disgusting smell, but because of everything needing 10/15 mins advance notice.

'Yes I'm ready, just nipping out for a cigarette and then we can go' etc.

Really annoying.

Just go on ahead and let them catch up?

carefulcalculator · 04/11/2022 04:54

Being addicted to nicotine is no fun, o don't think 'selfish' is the right word.

Spookypig · 04/11/2022 04:59

I don’t smoke but I don’t agree. I also like the smell of cigarettes on people, weirdly. It reminds me of my grandpa when I was a kid! I have never experienced this ‘I have to go for a cigarette first’ thing. I don’t know many smokers but those I do know will just smoke as they do whatever or not smoke until whatever we are doing has finished.

MolliciousIntent · 04/11/2022 05:05

All addicts are selfish, it's part and parcel of the disease, you put the addiction first.

lifeinthehills · 04/11/2022 05:07

There are some considerate smokers but I've met a fair few that are selfish. My father among them. There wasn't always money for medical care and infant car seats but there sure was always money for ciggies!

ChefCheese · 04/11/2022 05:43

I think you're trying to find a problem where there isn't one (...I'm not saying there isn't a problem with smoking, it's obviously not good for those who do, but I don't get your point about having to wait while someone has a cigarette). Are you that impatient if someone needs to go to the loo or can't find their keys?
Also - I quite like the smell. I reminds me of when I had loads of fun going out lots in my 20s in London.

Athenen0ctua · 04/11/2022 06:01

I hate it if they are holding you up and then getting in your car straight after the cigarette. I wish they'd just have it at the destination instead.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 04/11/2022 06:13

I’m in London and I can’t bear smokers who get off the tube and light up once out of the station, forcing you to walk behind their smoke clouds as you try and get to your office. At rush hour it’s crowded and there’s no escape. Bastards. The most selfish behaviour. Now I’m old I’ve actually started telling people off for blowing smoke in my face

sashh · 04/11/2022 06:21

My mother was the worst. I remember her moving the plate I was eating from to make room for her ashtray (one of those big ones pubs had).

Then she gave up and was incredulous when she was on a trip to France the the restaurant allowed smoking in a side of the restaurant but without a door or other physical divider.

Ifailed · 04/11/2022 06:22

Obviously, all non-smokers are punctual.

girlmom21 · 04/11/2022 06:29

I agree with you OP.

We have workmen in our house who somehow manage to make the whole house smell of cigarette smoke as they walk through it.

It's weird because some people stink of it and others don't, even straight after a cigarette.

The worst ones are those who congregate around hospitals or shops or walkways so you have no choice but to walk through it.

CJsGoldfish · 04/11/2022 06:30

Yes, they are, for a whole range of reasons.

And no, that mint, toothpaste, perfume isnt cutting it. You stink.

SavoirFlair · 04/11/2022 06:31

The hospital where my DD gets weekly treatment has an entrance to the specialist wing.

At the entrance are large NHS signs saying “this is a non smoking site - you can’t smoke outside the building or anywhere on site”

Huddled outside as we go in are usually around 5-10 patients, ranging from 20s to 70s in age, puffing away and not turning away, so my DD , a cancer patient, gets greeted with plumes of smoke every time we go in

The NHS trust when challenged point to the signage - there’s little else they feel they can do

Smoking is so inherently selfish though that I bet one of the smokers would say “get your toddler to wear a mask if you want to keep her safe from the fumes” etc.,they’re not going to change

Another smoker bashing thread. Great stuff. Couldn't sleep op?

mycatisannoying · 04/11/2022 06:34

They are selfish. It beats me how someone could have the gall to step into a bus stop shelter and light up! And it infuriates me when you see them drop their fag ends on the ground.

@LesterBiggott Read my post above and tell me a solution please…

girlmom21 · 04/11/2022 06:37

@SavoirFlair absolute cunts!

Our hospitals security patrol outside now to make sure there are no smokers immediately by the doors. Is there any security you could alert at yours?

Ifailed · 04/11/2022 06:22

Obviously, all non-smokers are punctual.

It's when they are ready, they just choose to delay by having a cigarette, knowing you are waiting. One if my siblings would never do this, they will smoke in a way to cause the least inconvenience to anyone else, but sadly they seem to be in the minority in my experience.

CoalCraft · 04/11/2022 06:38

I agree some smokers are very selfish. I was once sat around an outdoor table with family t asked my uncle if he'd mind not smoking next to me while I was pregnant. He suggested that I could instead move to a seat upwind of him, or leave the table until he was done. This guy is a chain smoker and is never done.

Other smokers are perfectly considerate though.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 04/11/2022 06:39

You realise that not every smoker does that? The one in your life might be selfish and inconsiderate, but that’s because of the person, not the cigarettes.

LesterBiggott · 04/11/2022 06:39

A good solution is to come onto Mumsnet and moan about how selfish all smokers are. And how bad they smell. Ad nauseam.

FindingMeno · 04/11/2022 06:40

I make my dc's wait until I've had a fag before they open their presents on Christmas morning.

LesterBiggott · 04/11/2022 06:41

A fag? You bigot. Typical smoker.

FindingMeno · 04/11/2022 06:43

Selfish bigot - pleeaassssse

wackamole · 04/11/2022 06:44

I've never noticed the timing issues. For me, the issue is the smell and the billows of smoke. I don't mind if someone is smoking outdoors or (obviously) in a designated smoking area but I've been travelling for work and the number of times there's been someone chain-smoking for what must be hours in a non-smoking room, hallway, floor or even a 100% nonsmoking hotel is ridiculous. This is in a country where smoking IS permitted in hotels unless the specific hotel restricts or forbids it. What kind of arsehole CHOOSES a non-smoking hotel and then smokes? That's selfish.
