I think smokers are just so selfish

Not just because of the disgusting smell, but because of everything needing 10/15 mins advance notice.

'Yes I'm ready, just nipping out for a cigarette and then we can go' etc.

Really annoying.

Selfish smelly bigot.

There!

A good solution is to come onto Mumsnet and moan about how selfish all smokers are. And how bad they smell. Ad nauseam.

If you don't like reading it, prove her wrong.

You've posted a few sarcastic responses but nothing to defend smokers.

Sparklfairy · 04/11/2022 06:47

When I smoked, our hospital had the signs but similar non-enforcement of them. If I had to go to the hospital for an appointment I would have one on the way/finish it outside the boundary (that's where the bins where!) and never saw anyone sneaking one on premises. I don't know if it was policed but seemed a respect thing. Outside A&E people seemed to do it right outside the doors though, it's a long wait and a long walk and staff aren't paid enough to tackle stressed ill/injured people.

Iamboredandgoingforatwix · 04/11/2022 06:47

There have been some really bizarre sweeping generalisations on MN of late. Very strange 🤔

tunthebloodyalarmoff · 04/11/2022 06:48

I bet some of the things you do are just as annoying

KvotheTheBloodless · 04/11/2022 06:51

They're addicts - I'm sure they'd rather not be. It's apparently harder to quit cigarettes than heroin.

Yes, it's annoying when you have to always wait whilst they light up (I find it most irritating at airports!).

Muddays · 04/11/2022 06:53

@lawofblah, I'm lucky that people seem to be prepared to wait for me to meticulously create and then finish my Backdraft cocktail (flaming Drambuie etc), can't imagine what a dreadful bore you would be in this situation but I'm sure you would find smokers a tad more tolerable.

FindingMeno · 04/11/2022 06:53

@LesterBiggott

I'm working class too and horribly uneducated.
So actually a selfish, smelly, scumbag bigot.

Prove her wrong? What exactly do I need to prove here? That she's lying and that there isn't a handful of smokers who are probably also cancer patients, extracting out a tiny bit of joy from their lives? Or how about the nurses / NHS staff that often smoke out there too as their spaces where they used to be able to smoke away from the public have been removed. You know, the ones we clapped for during covid. Well they've over stepped the mark now right...

Or prove her wrong that all smokers aren't selfish and are all perfectly lovely people.

Just like everyone else, there are some people who are selfish and some who are not.

Personally I don't give a shit if someone lights up a fag in front of me. There's plenty of people who I would like to fuck off with their shit behaviour and attitude about how others should behave. Smokers don't generally really reach that threshold for me, not in terms of their smoking anyway.

If it's such a problem then wear the mask. Or come on mumsnet and moan about a whole group of people, accuse them of being selfish because you don't like what they do.

Whatever floats your boat.

ReneBumsWombats · 04/11/2022 07:01

Addiction is serious. But smoking is so, so horrible.

At least with illegal drugs you get a high from the beginning so I can see why you'd do it again. By all accounts, everyone hates smoking when they start it, so how does the addiction develop these days with newer smokers? I didn't think it was seen as cool or glamorous any more.

PinkButtercups · 04/11/2022 07:01

I don't smoke but couldn't imagine someone smoking for 15 minutes before they pop out.

Nothing to do with Mumsnet, years before I joined here I thought people no longer admired it. Why would they?

LesterBiggott · 04/11/2022 07:13

Young people are the same as they ever were. That's why. So they try smoking / vaping/ drinking. Just like many of us did. Seems like an odd thing to ask.

And older people who smoke, well that's because they're addicted and they don't want to give up. Or they switch to vaping for the same reasons.

If you’re like me and suffer with asthma triggered by second hand smoke, wearing a mask around smokers makes it much worse, I literally cannot breathe.

Bonjovispjs · 04/11/2022 07:26

Absolutely agree, lost count of the amount of times the selfish idiots come along and hold their filthy cigarettes right near the kids faces when we've been waiting to cross the road etc, you don't get much more selfish than that.

RGinaPhalange · 04/11/2022 07:26

A relative of mine is the most selfish smoker I’ve ever met! When she’s done, She pings the ends in the street/park etc, once seen her do it at a graveyard.

I once had her round my house for a garden party and saw her ping one or two of the ends into my flower bed. When I asked her to put them in the bin she huffed and acted like I was the unreasonable one.

The next cigarette she had, instead of putting it in the bin as I’d just asked. She went out to the street and pinged it on the road. I asked if she’d throw a sweet wrapper in the road like that an she literally had no idea how it would be the same.

SpookyMcGhoul · 04/11/2022 07:29

My FIL is like this! It's so annoying. I put my foot down, we were out with him and MIL recently and just as we all got ready to leave he said "right just off for a cig" - I told him no, he looked so shocked 😂 I'm not sitting in a car driving you 2 hours home when you stink of smoke! He always stands right by the door of the car puffing away then hops in, it makes our car stink and smells horrendous for ages. I've made the rule of they have to smoke at the end of the driveway at ours, not in the garden or by the door. Shockingly he can go for a while without one when the weather is bad! 😂

Oh well, try and make the whole world change to fit your needs then. I'm sure people will read your post and change their ways. No doubt traffic fumes don't do any of this to you do they...

DillDanding · 04/11/2022 07:31

I don’t think all smokers are selfish. I actually feel sorry for them as it’s so sneered at nowadays.

green82 · 04/11/2022 07:34

I don't know any smokers these days, seems a dying habit now (not pun intended!)

green82 · 04/11/2022 07:34

That's it...honestly, I thought it had largely gone out of style. I don't see kids doing it and it doesn't seem to feature in their discourse. They say they don't want to smell or destroy their lungs. If it was cool and rebellious for your parents, it's probably got no appeal for you.

Shesasuperfreak · 04/11/2022 07:41

For me the selfishness is that after a cigarette a timer is set until they need another one.

So you see them at the same base point as you, then slowly getting more impatient and snappy until they light up again. And the "I need to find somewhere to smoke!"

I wonder if they understand the freeing feeling of not needing something except food and drinks.

Forfrigz · 04/11/2022 07:42

It's selfish to do something that harms the health if others around you as well as yourself. Can you imagine the outrage if whenever you ate a donut near others, they got somenof the calories? Smokers cause lung damage and poison the bodies of people around them yet rarely does anyon3 say anything. It's vile.
