I think smokers are just so selfish

Not just because of the disgusting smell, but because of everything needing 10/15 mins advance notice.

'Yes I'm ready, just nipping out for a cigarette and then we can go' etc.

Really annoying.

Pretty tricky when you're giving them a lift to the airport!

Are you a cab driver, as this seems a very specific complaint? None of the smokers I know have ever made me have to wait for them - they factor having a cigarette into their time.

xPeaceX · 04/11/2022 09:26

@Kindofcrunchy well, I had two pregnancies so I know there is a heightened sensitivity to smells.

Not sure why fasting makes any smell worse.
I'm a non smoker so I'm not bothering anybody I hope but who knows.
Even though I have asthma and never wanted to smoke, I still get that nicotine addiction is the driving force behind the smells/behaviours that could bother others. I don't know what the answer is but blanket labelling of smokers as selfish seems reactive

QuestioningMyExistence · 04/11/2022 09:27

Constantly needing to go out and smoke too! Giving them a break from work/parenting that nonsmokers don’t get.

PinkButtercups · 04/11/2022 09:28

@russetmellow How do you know they haven't tried? You don't. People are just too quick to judge unfortunately.

There are also a lot of Drug support groups, Alcohol support groups yet someone stinking of booze and having more than 14 units a week is classed as somewhat normal. I think it's just easier to bash smokers.

I'm not a smoker myself but certainly don't judge them.

nancydroo · 04/11/2022 09:29

Such a tolerant society. Perhaps smokers should be partitioned off and not be able to mix with non-smokers at all.

If they still smoke, they haven't tried hard enough

They need to be even if its just for walking around smelling the way they do...

But serious question for smokers, do you not smell your breath?

lifeinthehills · 04/11/2022 09:35

I don't think smokers know how strong it smells. When my father finally gave up a year ago he commented on how he was starting to notice how strong it was. It was unexpected.

PinkButtercups · 04/11/2022 09:36

@lawofselfish oh behave.

Life throws many things at people. People cope in different ways. Good for you that you managed to give up. There are probably lots of people who have and then something has happened and they've gone back to smoking.

You're judgemental on other peoples situations which you know nothing about.

This whole thread pretty much is a bash on smokers. But my point still stands it's perfectly normal and acceptable for someone to drink more than 14 units a week and not be classed as dependent on alcohol. Which in fact it actually is and there are serious health concerns for anyone drinking over 14 units a week just like there is something but that's acceptable right?

PinkButtercups · 04/11/2022 09:37

Smoking* not something.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 04/11/2022 09:39

Smoking is a very serious addiction that has killed millions of people.

They're to be pitied too as they were suckered in by heavy advertising.

I attended NA the majority of ex addicts couldn't beat their nicotine dependency but could quit heroin and crack.

No, that's not acceptable. And people who take it a step further and drink and drive are selfish too.

Yanbu. Smoking related health problems cost England £17 billion a year.

That’s £17 billion that could have been spent on schools, food banks, energy grants etc.

Yes, smoking is deeply selfish.

Smokers more than cover this amount with the huge amount of tax / reduced pensions etc they pay on fags. 🤨 This isn't money that could be returned to the pot to spend on other things. It wouldn't be there at all.

Why are you getting so close to strangers that you can smell their breath? Didn't covid measures teach you anything?

lawofselfish · 04/11/2022 09:42

You don't have to be close to smell it, that's the point

There's often a weird pettiness of complaint when people are railing against smokers. It conjures a strange image - gammony faces and tiny fists of rage over... well, summat and nowt, really

Aposterhasnoname · 04/11/2022 09:47

LesterBiggott · 04/11/2022 08:49

I wonder are some of them from the diminishing cohort of smokers who still refuse to hear the message.

Oh I vape. I hear your message. I just don't give a shit.

Well, I guess your point is proven OP

Georgeskitchen · 04/11/2022 09:49

I prefer smokers to drink drivers who can and do kill innocents and I prefer smokers to heroin addicts who can and do burgle and traumatise people for their next fix
In fact there's a whole.list of people I prefer smokers to

Unfortunately, I don't even need to be "so close" to smell it😥😥

nomoreflyingducks · 04/11/2022 09:50

I don't think smokers are any more or any less selfish than any other human being.
I hate it when folk have a fag outside shop or cafe entrances because my hair ends up reeking of cigarette smoke (but in my neck of the woods most smokers don't do this, they tend to stand to the side and slightly away from shop/ cafe doors, so it's not an issue)
But smokers do need somewhere to smoke and outside is definitely better than in so it's a compromise.
I'd far rather walk by smokers than drinkers.
All humans have their vices, I don't believe their is a truly 'virtuous' person on this board! And if there is, well you're a far better person than I!

Hankunamatata · 04/11/2022 09:51

Nope never found they need advanced notice. Usually my smoker is huffing at me for being late
