I think smokers are just so selfish

Not just because of the disgusting smell, but because of everything needing 10/15 mins advance notice.

'Yes I'm ready, just nipping out for a cigarette and then we can go' etc.

Really annoying.

I wonder are some of them from the diminishing cohort of smokers who still refuse to hear the message.

Oh I vape. I hear your message. I just don't give a shit.

xPeaceX · 04/11/2022 08:49

Non-smoker I mean. I'm a typo-er though

xPeaceX · 04/11/2022 08:53

@Kindofcrunchy was the smell of fresh second hand smoke off the clothes of a woman who stood outside while smoking really that nausea inducing?

Yes, that's coming across loud and clear.

I prefer it to vaping.
Vaping makes me gag. Those sick air freshener smells, yuck.
The smell of a cig at the next table is quite nice.
Smokers are addicted so I don't think selfish is the right word either.
Nin Smokers myself but never anti smoking.

My father would trot that out all the time as an excuse. "It's an addiction." Serving your addiction over feeding your kids, providing medical care for a family member, or being able to afford car seats for your kids (meaning they are traveling unrestrained) is selfish. Hey, we might have died if he had an accident but at least he got to smoke.

Have you ever had to fast while pregnant?

BitOutOfPractice · 04/11/2022 08:56

@LesterBiggott i genuinely see surprisingly few threads on smoking on mn. Maybe you do because it hits a nerve.

my exDP smoked and I loved the fact that, once an hour or so he’d stop to go for a smoke and have that 5 minutes just to stop, think, stare into space or whatever and just be. I wish I could do that, without the cigarettes of course (I’ve never smoked).

That is literally the only positive I can think of for smoking though I have to say, I don’t really encounter it much these days

bakewellbride · 04/11/2022 08:56

Yanbu they are all awful. I've just done the school run and there is always a mum who is heavily pregnant and smokes. It's disgusting.

most people can do it without smoking.

vodkaredbullgirl · 04/11/2022 09:04

Yes all us smokers are selfish 🙄

Fifthtimelucky · 04/11/2022 09:04

I have never smoked and am very anti-smoking, but I don't think there is any correlation between smokers and selfishness.

Selfish people who smoke will display their selfishness in ways related to smoking in the same way that selfish people who drive display their selfishness in the way they drive.

That doesn't mean that all smokers (or drivers) are selfish.

MajorCarolDanvers · 04/11/2022 09:05

It's an addiction that is incredibly difficult to overcome.

cushioncovers · 04/11/2022 09:10

Growing up with a smoker I resent the fact that as a child we missed out on certain things because my parents didn't have enough money but my father always had money for cigarettes and his hobbies.

In general that's probably true.
But I know some people who are perfectly considerate in other areas but just do not get it when it comes to smoking. Despite how vocal non smokers are nowadays they just continue to light up anywhere it's legal to do so, despite any inconvenience to other people.

Just go on ahead and let them catch up?

Pretty tricky when you're giving them a lift to the airport!

Being addicted to nicotine is no fun, o don't think 'selfish' is the right word.

I used to smoke. People can quit

I make my dc's wait until I've had a fag before they open their presents on Christmas morning.

😂

OKild09 · 04/11/2022 09:22

I totally agree OP. For me it's their breath...How can you be walking around with breath smelling like dirty cesspit? Get some mints or a pack of gum or something to tone it down a bit. Just EWWWW

russetmellow · 04/11/2022 09:22

Totally selfish - most smokers don't know just how gross they smell to everyone around them, and how they can literally stink out rooms after they've been smoking. And also an unnecessary burden on the NHS.

It's deeply addictive but there are so many supports for giving up - NHS actually recommend vaping as a way to wean off cigs - nicotine without most of the health downsides. Vaping does have that sweet smell but it dissipates much quicker and there don't seem to be side-effects. I don't vape or smoke but some of my family have started vaping instead of smoking and it's such a relief.

londongals · 04/11/2022 09:23

And they STINK and LOOK ridiculous

Unseelie · 04/11/2022 09:24

Yanbu. Smoking related health problems cost England £17 billion a year.

That’s £17 billion that could have been spent on schools, food banks, energy grants etc.

Yes, smoking is deeply selfish.
