Our new King, Charles

How awful it must be for him to lose his mother and then immediately take on this role. He's had his whole life to prepare, but can a person ever really prepare for something like that?

@DowningStreetParty
If King Charles can prioritise urging action on the environmental crisis that we are all facing, then that would be an excellent contribution for him to make

He shouldn’t be doing any such thing ffs. It’s supposed to be a hereditary constitutional monarchy and the Windsors staying completely and totally out of politics is the only thing that makes it in any way sort of functional. He needs to stop writing his letters and keep his nose completely out of the decision making/lobbying process. If he wants a say in how our country is run he should stand for election like everyone else.

When we look down the list of monarchs we see most of them were pretty imperfect people. So let’s not get too much on our high horse about Charles. And which sleazy politician would you like to represent us if we had a republic? The voice isn’t exactly mouthwatering!

Generally that’s how democracy goes. I’m not sure the potential for people to vote for a bad choice is justification for removing their ability to choose. At least bad choices can be voted out, unlike autocrats.

Unless of course you’re generally not a fan of democracy.

He will always be Charles the Cheater as far as I am concerned and Camilla will always be the OW

What a ridiculous post!!

He was unhappy, she was unhappy.
I was a cheater in a very unhappy marriage
Now it wouldn't even cross my mind

Live and let live without all your hate because your husband was a cock

Im surprised at his age he hasn’t just passed it to William. He should be relaxing in his 70’s not taking up a massive role

His whole life he has been preparing for this moment, I don't think he would do that.

CathyorClaire · 08/09/2022 20:56

William would be a much better option

That's not how the archaic circus a hereditary monarchy works.

TheFoodtheFadandtheFugly · 08/09/2022 20:59

I wonder about the relationship between William, Harry and Charles - as the succession changes etc. William is already listed as the Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge.

A colleague at worked wondered if the fact Harry travelled separately was part of the current tense situation. I think this is a private family moment but it must be so strange to be all together in such circumstances.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 08/09/2022 20:59

i also feel for Charles,
and William,
and indeed George!

CathyorClaire · 08/09/2022 21:00

And which sleazy politician would you like to represent us if we had a republic?

Any who were actually elected and could be kicked out or even subjected to a vote of confidence.

Aquarius1234 · 08/09/2022 21:00

I'd be very surprised if Charles is King for 20 years.

Aquarius1234 · 08/09/2022 21:01

Prob give up at 80.

HuntingoftheSnark · 08/09/2022 21:02

I think Charles will be a good king. Having grown up with several of them, I find it odd to hear King Charles without "spaniel".

Wauden · 08/09/2022 21:03

I think that King Charles will be a very good king. He is a sincere person, a hard worker, sensitive, cares about the environment and gets on with things.
God save the King.

Purplelion · 08/09/2022 21:04

Those of you saying “he’s a cheater” etc.
And? Plenty of people cheat, for many reasons. People you know and like will have done/be doing it and you’ll have no idea.

It’a a sad day, have some respect.

Mum2jenny · 08/09/2022 21:06

Not too impressed with Charles being king, I know he’s been trained for the position for more than 70 years, but meh……

Am raising a glass to his mum, may she rest in peace.

Truss' statement was excellent, I am very glad Boris wasn't in office for this.

I don’t know if you heard the statement that Boris released. It was very eloquent moving and much better than the one Liz Truss read

CathyorClaire · 08/09/2022 21:09

I think he has demonstrable form for poor judgement and hypocrisy but there you go.

the80sweregreat · 08/09/2022 21:11

Boris Johnson is a great writer
It's sad he didn't stick to this really !

DdraigGoch · 08/09/2022 21:11

TeacupDrama · 08/09/2022 19:45

William has become Duke of Cornwall and Prince George will be Duke of Cambridge ( though probably not officially)

If a peer has more than one title, often the lesser title will be used by the eldest son as a courtesy title. It carries no meaning in law, it is purely a courtesy. He'll be Duke of Cambridge but not the Duke of Cambridge.

Bogofftosomewherehot · 08/09/2022 21:12

@CousinGregg

Have some respect - she's not even cold yet. 😡

I was just thinking this. Having to 'rule' whilst grieving and having the eyes of the world on you as well.

The monarch of the UK does not rule. The government does that. The monarch reigns.

greenhousegal · 08/09/2022 21:19

It's the first transition of a monarch in over 70 years, he deserves a chance to prove himself capable of doing the job with dignity.

Sorry now, but one thing he desperately needs is a good make up artist and a good red corrector cream. He does look scarily florid on occasion. But that doesn't mean he won't be a good King either.

I'll give him a year to settle in and if he turns out to be a big interfering mouth and if he gets any more bags of cash from the Middle East I will not be impressed!

Flockbee · 08/09/2022 21:21

They know the deal. Not saying it'll be easy of course but it won't be a shock to him for it to go to him straight away, he will have a good support network to help him through.

TQIDLLTK · 08/09/2022 21:21

user1471505494 · 08/09/2022 21:06

I did not hear BoJo's statement and not interested to either. I think of Partygate - the Queen sitting on her own at her husband's funeral whilst No.10 was shamed by him and made a mockery of us.

JustLyra · 08/09/2022 21:24

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 08/09/2022 20:40

All of those Diana lovers were screaming for the Royal Family to appear at Buckingham Palace when she died.

No screaming now.

Why would they be screaming when they’ve already announced when the family will return to London?

Thats pretty barrel scraping.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 08/09/2022 21:25

Hopefully he’ll try to hold this government to account on the environment! They’re position seems terrifying
