Our new King, Charles

How awful it must be for him to lose his mother and then immediately take on this role. He's had his whole life to prepare, but can a person ever really prepare for something like that?

God help us, is all I can say. I do not think Charles is fit to be king. He interferes in political and cultural matters with often very bad effects on ordinary people - his actions have directly caused people to lose their livelihoods (eg architects and architecture firms).

SpiderinaWingMirror · 08/09/2022 21:26

I'm wondering how long before Charles cuts off Andrew. Maybe he is wandering the Scottish countryside with a duffel bag already.

He’ll be part of the funeral and all the formalities. Things like vigil of the Princes will include him.

Beyond that I think he’ll be strategically “unwell” for big royal events going forward.

bellac11 · 08/09/2022 21:28

I said this earlier to OH, his days are numbered, neither Charles nor William are keen on him

It's the first transition of a monarch in over 70 years, he deserves a chance to prove himself capable of doing the job with dignity.

Sorry now, but one thing he desperately needs is a good make up artist and a good red corrector cream. He does look scarily florid on occasion. But that doesn't mean he won't be a good King either.

I'll give him a year to settle in and if he turns out to be a big interfering mouth and if he gets any more bags of cash from the Middle East I will not be impressed!

You think he should even think about, let alone prioritise his complexion colour?

It's so jarring to hear them saying "The King" on the BBC. It'll take a while to get used to it I think.

Read a comment earlier that’s it’s a title you associate with history, not today, so it will take some time to adapt.

I think they are mad to allow Charles to take this on. He has too many gaffes to his name which could see the popularity of the institution nosedive. William on the otherhand being very much in the mould of Diana, ie. considerate, shy, and very likeable, would see a much smoother transition and maintain the high levels of popularity for the role.

He has actually said he knows he will have to stop doing that now and obey constitutional constraints. Give him a chance.

The monarch of the UK does not rule. The government does that. The monarch reigns.

Yes I know. That why I said 'rule' not rule. I just couldn't remember the word reign at that moment.

Am raising a glass to his mum, may she rest in peace.

Truss' statement was excellent, I am very glad Boris wasn't in office for this.

We’ve cracked open a bottle of wine too for her maj 😢

I was just thinking this. Having to 'rule' whilst grieving and having the eyes of the world on you as well.

Yes I just said the same to DH, not an easy position to be in at all.

MadamTrelawney · 08/09/2022 21:38

I feel sorry for him for how quickly he has to step into the roll of King after the passing of his mother. It has to be so surreal for him.

He will always be Charles the Cheater as far as I am concerned and Camilla will always be the OW

He was blocked from marrying the woman he loved and told to marry Diana. His whole upbringing was toxic. And his relationship with Diana also was.

Doesn't justify cheating at all but I sure hope the RF have reached a point where they permit marriage for love, and not for fucking hymens.

Newly minted notes and coins, (and stamps), will have a new portrait but both will run parallel for some time @

I think that most of his comments on architecture have been on point. Did you see the models for the proposed National Gallery extension? "Carbuncle" was definitely the word.

To me he will always be the adulterer who wished he was a tampon.

Helgadaley · 08/09/2022 21:41

I am sure he will do his best. He has fairly trenchant views on lots of subjects but I think he will be wise enough to keep his political opinions private now. At the moment he is grieving for his mother, it's very hard when your remaining parent dies, and the fact that he is now the king will make this a very bittersweet occasion. More bitter than sweet, I imagine.

Even before Epstein, Charles wanted to slim the operation down.

Will the Cambridge children have all their school books and sewn in uniform labels changed to Wales or Cornwall?

Even in the 1970s, there was never any real question of him marrying Camilla. They weren't that serious about each other. She was mad about Andrew Parker Bowles at any rate.

Twilightimmortal · 08/09/2022 21:33

Eventually. It'll take time to find an artist, have new portraits done etc. Coins in particular last decades so there will be plenty of old ones still in circulation for a long time to come.

Agree
he didnt recognise his mother when she travelled abroad without him for an extended time and returned following the death of her father.

he had a totally messed up childhood
hated his boarding school

cabansunset · 08/09/2022 21:44

He was in a miserable marriage, he made mistakes, so did Diana. It's very sad she didn't find happiness and true love, I believe she would have eventually. They are just people trying their best, like we all are.

I quite like him, he cares about the environment and seems like a good dad, fil & grandpa. How can you follow on from such a beloved monarch, nobody will live up to her.

Manekinek0 · 08/09/2022 21:46

I don't think he has the side profile for stamps and I'm not looking forward to seeing his ugly mug on my money.

LucilleDarlingtonUnexpectedly · 08/09/2022 21:48

RIP Queen Elizabeth II you were amazing.

Long live the King.
