How awful it must be for him to lose his mother and then immediately take on this role. He's had his whole life to prepare, but can a person ever really prepare for something like that?

  • I am afraid I do not share the sentiments - he did not overcome lots of hurdles to be with the woman he loved, he was with her during his marriage and callously allowed his young wife to be sacrificed to his own desires. I have no time for the man to be frank.

I am sorry his Mum has died, but that does not make me blind to his faults.*

I'd say a lot of the fault probably lies with his mum. His family certainly.

Shockingly disrespectful. Yuk, time to get off this thread.

Jizzle · 08/09/2022 19:58

Yep, no love for Charles here. The whole institution should be ended now the Queen has died

Babyboomtastic · 08/09/2022 19:58

Historically, royals would marry for duty and have a mistress for love, and it was kind if accepted. Now, they can marry for love. Charles was in that in-between era where he couldn't choose to marry for love, but was expected to be faithful as well.

He didnt treat Diana fairly, but the whole situation was awful, and destined to end in a lot of unhappiness.

I think King Charles III will be a good king.

He's cared about the environment long before it was popular to care for the environment. He will have learnt a lot from his mother, he's had a very very long apprenticeship after all.

Whilst he has his own personal history, I don't think it should be held against him.

Long live the King.

Hear hear ……….Good save the Queen, long live the King

Daisybuttercup12345 · 08/09/2022 20:01

So terribly sad. Poor Charles. If you are lucky enough to have a good Mum you never get over losing her.

Im surprised at his age he hasn’t just passed it to William. He should be relaxing in his 70’s not taking up a massive role

Dump the Crown on his sons head at a point when he has little support around him? Not talking to his brother, kids too young to help, others all too far outside. First Heir dumped on the 8 yo knowing if anything happens to his Dad it's on HIM when he's just a kid. It'd be a shitty thing to do.

Stressybetty · 08/09/2022 20:04

Gave me a massive fright, DH. shouted Mum, Mum, then Betty come quick she's dead! Thought he meant MIL was dead, she was in the lounge with him! Still tingling with adrenaline

KosherDill · 08/09/2022 20:10

When will Charles speak? I thought it was today but it's getting a bit late.

whumpthereitis · 08/09/2022 19:52

Lol. A church that exists because of adultery. At least he’s still on his second wife and has refrained from chopping her head off.

Fine point, well made @whumpthereitis

Fififelix · 08/09/2022 20:17

Not keen on Charles I wanted it to pass straight to William.

That’s not how monarchy works, we don’t get to choose!

spanieleyes · 08/09/2022 20:19

Not how it works, it's a hereditary monarchy, not a pick and mix!

Livelovebehappy · 08/09/2022 20:19

I really can’t see how the Royal Family will survive now the Queen is dead. A lot of anti Royalists still loved and respected the Queen, so weren’t too vocal, but now she’s died, and once everything settles down after her funeral, I think there might be a lot of dis-enchanted people coming to the fore. Changes will need to be made by Charles to ensure its survival.

Flutterbybudget · 08/09/2022 20:19

I agree that it would be incredibly hard to lose your mum and then have to carry on as if nothing/ everything had changed, at the same time as grieving, and all in the public eye to boot.

I happen to think that Charles III will be a good king, he already does a lot for charity and the environment. He obviously cares a great deal about the role. No, I don’t think he should pass the throne to William, right now he (Charles) is a buffer for William to shield behind, while he raises his your family away from the reassures and spotlight. Hopefully he can give that to William for some time to come.
Camilla? Personally I have a lot of time for her. She comes across as unassuming, caring and genuine. She will make a good Queen Consort for Charles.

I like him and i think he will do a great job.

Antarcticant · 08/09/2022 20:20

I'm glad he opted to be known as Charles III. It would have made a surreal-feeling situation even more weird if he'd chosen (as was suggested he might) George VII.

Cupofteaonesugar · 08/09/2022 20:23

I was surprised to read the statement on the royal family page and how blunt it was and already referring to him as king. Could it not just have been a dedication to her? I'm not interested in where Charles and camilla are sleeping tonight!

Same thing happened to our Queen in the early 1950s, and she was only 26! Lost her dad then had to become Queen immediately. Yep, quite a lot to deal with. She was a star then, and was right up to the second she died. Can't believe it, and I am shocked and upset. Sad

But yep, we now have a KING. Weird.

That is the traditional way - 'the Queen is dead, long live the King'. There has to be no sense of 'gap' otherwise the whole idea of monarchy falls down (historically, someone else might have sneaked out of the woodwork and tried to establish a claim to the throne if there was any break in continuity).

Dont you know that there is never a vacuum? Its instant, the queen is dead, long live the queen, the next one is monarch instantly.

Its correct to refer to him as King the minute she died. In fact in history, most new monarchs have been informed or made aware of their parent's death by the messenger approaching and announcing them as 'your majesty'.

Oh don’t talk such utter drivel.
There have been kings and queens in England for nigh on 1000 Years and we’ve just had the longest monarch we’ve ever had. Public interest in the Monarchy has never been so high.
It will be around many generations after we’ve all gone.

William would be a much better option.

He will always be Charles the Cheater as far as I am concerned and Camilla will always be the OW

For you. I quite like Camilla and think they make a nice couple.
