Our new King, Charles

How awful it must be for him to lose his mother and then immediately take on this role. He's had his whole life to prepare, but can a person ever really prepare for something like that?

Our new king hissed at his lackeys in front of the nation's cameras over an inconveniently placed pen box on the day he'd been waiting seventy odd years for.

Plus ça change.

I didn’t see any hissing. I saw a slightly tetchy movement of his fingers.

Well to be fair you would say that as you're such a staunch royalist. I think it was rude and so do thousands of other people as it's gone viral on social media.

jollygoose · 10/09/2022 22:03

I must be over tired I thought I was going to read about your new spaniel.

Blossomtoes · 10/09/2022 22:08

Well obviously if Twitter’s frothing about it, it must be heinous. 🙄

All families have their secrets and they are no different.
When parents die it’s an unstable time for most families.
Someone mentioned the PM, why oh why is she not calling herself Mrs O’Leary. She’s talking about being truthful and honest but doesn’t use her real name. I know some trendies choose their maiden name but this is different she’s the PM.

Lepigeon - Anything goes viral on social media 🙄

Fascinating how the vast majority of posters are royalists. Does no one believe that inherited privilege is an immoral anachronism? What about democracy?

I'm not a royalist - I think that (maybe apart from the Black Death...) the Norman Conquest was possibly the worst thing that has ever happened to this country: the source of our aristocracy, our class system and the mass theft of common land. But over the centuries we have developed into a constituional monarchy that works pretty well. Comparing the Queen with other Heads of State around the world I think we have been incredibly fortunate. I may not approve of the system we have, but I'm not convinced any other system is better. And I think Charles will do an excellent job too. So I'm a pro-royalty anti-royalist. 🤔

She does use her “real” name.

what a silly thing to say.

ivykaty44 · 13/09/2022 06:02

doesn’t use her real name.

you can keep using your birth name, or choose which one if those to use. Mary Elizabeth Truss is her real name

The 1950's called you. They want their attitudes back. 🙄

She IS using her REAL name you fool.

StridTheKiller · 13/09/2022 06:14

I can only seem to think of him as 'King Charles The Spaniel'.

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 13/09/2022 07:19

Well fancy that! If you don't CHOOSE - because it is a choice, not a legal requirement - to adopt your husband's surname on marriage then you're not honest and truthful. Eh?
Can you explain how that works @KelvingrovesBest ?

Same as people who insist Meghan Markle's real name is Rachel. Of course it is, just the same as Meghan is.

Her real name IS Liz Truss. No woman is under any legal obligation to change to her husband's name on marriage.

Why, oh why does this utterly wrong belief persist? Why? There are plenty of things that I could criticise Liz Truss for, but being called Liz Truss isn't one of them. It is her name.

The tradition of women taking on their husbands' surnames on marriage is just that. A tradition, not a legality. It stems from when women were considered possessions of men and belongs firmly in the past.

So not taking her husband's name, equals dishonesty? Did you keep a straight face whilst typing that? Do you say the say about the many female actresses, for instance, who do the same; should we no longer watch their films?

That has to be one of the stupidest posts I've ever seen on MN- and there's stiff competition for that title.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 13/09/2022 09:05

KelvingrovesBest I see you've picked a Scottish place as a user name.

It was actually common for Scottish married women up to the 18th and early 19th century, especially in the North East and in the Highlands to be known by their baptised name throughout their lives. Scottish cemeteries frequently record "Jean Smith, spouse of John Brown" on the gravestone. So hardly a new trend.
