Our new King, Charles

How awful it must be for him to lose his mother and then immediately take on this role. He's had his whole life to prepare, but can a person ever really prepare for something like that?

It weird seeing people who a week ago would have happily mocked Charles for something or other now solemnly declare 'god save the king'. Monarchy is a funny thing.

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 09/09/2022 09:41

Ah, kings and heirs to the throne have always shagged around, or had "mistresses". Their marriages were arranged and not necessarily what they'd have wanted. Charles was even heard jokingly bemoaning, about 30 years ago - peak Camilla time - about being the only Prince of Wales not allowed to have a mistress.
The tampon thing was a private conversation that was hacked, not a public proclamation.

I have no particular feelings about KC3, but I'd give him a chance before writing him off.

But they have got a role in governance. They get sight of proposed law and have lobbied for changes to them and gained exceptions for themselves. The government is now suspended for 10 days. They have an impact.

Not correct. In principle, the Monarch can intervene. If my memory serves me correctly, this has only happened once.

Why do they live separately?

Charles snores.

Guardian have been running stories about several interventions and the royal family being exempt from certain property laws on their estate, they don’t advertise it but they can certainly meddle.
And certainly government, which has some very pressing business, is currently suspended, only able to participate in mourning.

Anyway, I’m certainly in a minority and today probably isn’t the day for criticism, I’ve no beef with the individuals, just don’t agree with the system.

If only we had that pillar of morality, the previous Head of Government, back ...

And it's not as if we've never had a divorced monarch before. Henry VIII, anyone?

I don’t have a problem with a divorced Monarch.

I do however find it difficult to condone adultery regardless of who’s the person is.

They don’t live separately.

Camilla still enjoys spending time in the family home she had before marrying Charles.

I was referring to the Royal Assent. You quote the Guardian as your source? Why am I not surprised. Yes. Agree this isn't the time for criticism, though. It's a shame that sentiment can't be shared by the threads doing the rounds not buying into the public outpouring of grief. It really is distasteful, imo.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/09/2022 14:51

Well, he's back in London and I can't believe the intrusiveness of his security grunts during the walkabout. Very obviously they need to be there, but practically jostling shoulder to shoulder with him?

Practically no focus on Camilla either, so (not surprisingly) a lot of thought's clearly gone into this

Blossomtoes · 09/09/2022 15:12

I thought that too. Those security guys were appallingly bad. I hope that gets sorted out soon.

PinkyFlamingo · 09/09/2022 15:28

There have been kings and queens in England for nigh on 1000 Years and we’ve just had the longest monarch we’ve ever had

No England hasn't just had this....UK has.

Will the national anthem lyrics change ?

Well, they're hardly going to go on singing 'God save the Queen' when we have a King, are they?

The UK hasn't existed for a thousand years, so no

I noticed some woman just kissed the new King. Bit of a gaffe for security.

I think she’ll look back on the kiss and wish she hadn’t done it. It was I’ll timed and not appropriate

I’ve always considered her to be a nervy person and not comfortable being in the public eye. When she did join Charles outside the palace today I thought she could quite possibly faint she looked so upset and nervous. Then the cameras showed the back view of them walking into the palace and despite not being a fan of her becoming the Queen Consort they just looked so right together that I’m now thinking perhaps it is right.

As a union no, but Ireland, Wales and Scotland also had their own monarchies and none of those lasted as long either.

She’s just been interviewed, she’s very proud of it. She says she asked him first and he said yes.

Are you watching the same as everyone else?

She has never looked nervy or uncomfortable, she is a fairly solid looking person, she was smiling and waving, didnt look upset at all.

NanaNelly · 09/09/2022 16:45

There were two people who kissed him.

One who asked and one who went in like a kitchen plunger and clearly felt embarrassed she’d done it.

One kissed his hand. They interviewed sink plunger woman and she said she asked and he said yes.

@bellac11

I think your just looking for a bit of an argument here but I’m quite confident in my observations of Camilla over the years and you’re just going to have to go and look somewhere else for a bit of a bunfight. I can’t be bothered with you and this reply is the only one you’ll be getting.
