How awful it must be for him to lose his mother and then immediately take on this role. He's had his whole life to prepare, but can a person ever really prepare for something like that?

Fascinating how the vast majority of posters are royalists. Does no one believe that inherited privilege is an immoral anachronism? What about democracy?

Today is not the time.

SequinsandStilettos · 09/09/2022 21:19

Not a royalist. Respected Crown's work ethic though. I like Camilla, probably biased as she is a Glitterball fan. Am not yet over Charles's declaration of love though. His wish to be a tampon i.e inside her, is just...eww. <insert joke about Milla pulling all the strings> Wink Grin

Anyone who was such close friends with Jimmy Saville and used Jimmy Saville as a go between during marriage issue with Diana does not have my respect. Do your research .

You've seen how the British people vote, pretty sure that isn't a good idea. In seriousness though what would people be voting for- people wouldnt be likely to be arsed about ceremonial duties to a random person, and they dont have political power etc? How often would you have someone switch out? As the royals are not political on what basis would they run campaigns? How would you remove all barriers to being elected ie we know having money, networks and education makes accessing these processes and having a chance more likely? If the element of history and tradition was removed do you think they'd have the same meaning or just be some random person parading around? Would their family be able to be part of the Royal family as well, what if they're awful people? Will anyone be as bothered about visiting royal households etc if its just someone random? How would you run the voting- it costs a tonne of money to do an election and doubtful many would engage?

Probably not.

Age is on his side, he’s more mature. His mum took on this role aged 24.

And I guess he always knew it was coming.

I like Charles. He cares about the environment, wrote cool stories and overcame a lot hurdles to finally be with the woman he loves.

Me too - He seems a kind gentle man who always loved Camilla, such a shame that he and Diana were forced together, never right for each other.
I think he’s an absolute sweetie.

I'd hate to be King Charles or Liz Truss atm 😔

Truss chose to do it.

Queen Camilla!! That sticks in my craw. Thank God my home nation is a Republic. Hope others follow soon.

Why, what does it matter to you when you don’t live in the UK?

Surely you’d just get rid of the concept of Royalty as a whole, leaving the country to be managed the way democracy is generally managed, without the need for such figureheads.

‘They might vote for someone terrible’ and ‘organizing it is arseache’ is not really compelling justification for 1, denying people the ability to choose, and 2, not organizing it. I mean, in regards to the former point you’re at the mercy of primogeniture anyway. Voting for someone terrible you can at least vote out I would imagine is preferable to being stuck with someone you can’t. Unless you’re a fan of autocracy I suppose, because ‘best not have a vote, what if someone shit is elected?’ can easily be extended to dismiss democracy as a whole.

Im not a royalist, but Im all over these threads giving a view on how Im feeling and the logistics and what I think about whats happening.

You can disagree with the overall concept of the thing but still accept that a) its happening and b) a new person is in a new role and I have a view about what he will be like

Does no one believe that inherited privilege is an immoral anachronism?

I dont really see it as any different to someone becoming a lawyer because daddy was a judge, or someone inheriting two houses and ££££££, or someone doing shit loads of internships and "building up a deposit" for a nice flat in a nice part of a nice city because they were able to live rent free with mum for 6 years after graduating, or getting a book published/working in meeja because the family paid for posh writing courses or pulled strings with their journo friends.

Much of our middle and upper classes evolve and exist through inherited privilege. That's life.

You are correct. mountbatten introduced Saville to the Royals. Anyone who gets near the royals is vetted by intelligence services etc. how did they not know???

Give me the late Queen and Charles any day over some of the horrors from all parties who’ve occupied Downing Street.

William has become Duke of Cornwall and Prince George will be Duke of Cambridge ( though probably not officially)

No george won’t. Only the monarch can bestow titles. George will not receive a dukedom until he marries. William is known as duke of Cornwall and Cambridge. And soon to be prince of wales.

He wouldn’t need to bestow it. George could use one of William’s lesser titles, which the Dukedoms will now be, but I don’t think it’s very likely. William was never known by any of Charles’ titles.

the80sweregreat · 10/09/2022 11:10

Would Prince Harry been at the Privvy council as well if he hadn't done what he done?'

No. The royal members of the Privvy council are limited to the monarch’s spouse, the heir apparent and their spouse.
