AIBU to think I will be able to get my paws on a PlayStation 5?

My DS would quite like the new PlayStation 5 for Christmas, it needed to be pre ordered a couple of months ago which I did not do. It wasn't decided if that is what he was getting so that's why I didn't pre order.
Is this pre order malarchy just to build hype and anticipation or will I really not be able to purchase one nearer to Christmas?
What are your thoughts please?

Funny how defensive people get when you raise matters of spending on luxurious items in difficult economical times.

Defensive how, please? I don't own a PS5 and I don't have anything to defend.

Not everyone is feeling the same bite of the current economic climate, however. The primary market of the PS5 is affluent young professionals in white-collar roles. Consequently they are the people who are most likely able to work from home and in addition to having no drop in their income they are saving an absolute bomb not commuting or going out and are probably feeling even more financially comfortable than ever.

It's a huge and simmering problem that the current issues affect different groups so disproportionately in our society but you really have picked the wrong hill here.

FudgeDrudge · 20/11/2020 13:52

Then why do we keep hearing over and over how hard done by people are, how more and more people require access to food banks, how we need more social housing because people can't afford their rent, let alone to save for a mortgage

Is that a serious question? You're seriously asking why do yu keep hearing about poor people even though lots of people are not poor?
Wow.

BrumBoo · 20/11/2020 13:53

Then why do we keep hearing over and over how hard done by people are, how more and more people require access to food banks, how we need more social housing because people can't afford their rent, let alone to save for a mortgage.

Because that is true for many people, just like its true many people still have disposable income and can afford this console . Why is this so difficult to wrap your head around? Do you have actual statistics on how many people visited food banks this year just bought a PS5? Or is it just based on your personal prejudices and your conversation with your neighbour who just happens to 'prove your point'?

The reality us that people donprioritize gadgets over essential bills or savings and this latest craze at worse time is just evidence of it.

A minority of people might. The majority get them because they can afford them. Even if those on very low income find the means to get one, so what? How does that affect you personally if you're so smugly living with any frivolous items in your life (bar whatever device you're wasting your time on here)?

hammeringinmyhead · 20/11/2020 13:54

Oh god. You're one of those "Millennials could afford a house if they stopped buying Starbucks and avocados" people, aren't you? And how convenient that your neighbour is an exact example of a food-bank-using gamer.
Do you also believe The Sun when it says immigrant families get £40k a year in benefits and everyone in council housing has a massive telly?

EmilySpinach · 20/11/2020 13:54

Breaking news: wealth inequality in Western capitalist society.

And Sky. Don't forget that 'they' all have Sky.

nevermorelenore · 20/11/2020 13:58

Why not hop on over to style and beauty and complain about people buying designer, limited edition bags? Or go berate the people on the car forum for buying a Mercedes when they could just buy a Fiat to get from A to B? People spend money their money how they want thanks.

hammeringinmyhead · 20/11/2020 13:58

Oh yes, Sky. And "the latest" something. Usually iPhone.

FudgeDrudge · 20/11/2020 13:58

Ok, for those still confused:

Some people are suffering badly and have very little money. They need things like food banks and FSM. They probably aren't buying many playstations

Some people are not suffering at all, they have plenty of disposable income. They can buy playstations.

The existence of the latter does not negate the existence of the former. Surprised you need the primer but there you are.

Oblomov20 · 20/11/2020 14:07

I don't know why people are so surprised. The gaming industry is huge, multi millions. I partly work in it.

Loads of people have enough disposable income to buy one. Plenty of others struggle and need food banks. Hardly hard to understand.

Clymene · 20/11/2020 14:14

No one is surprised apart from the one benefit basher.

Greycurtiansarenaff · 20/11/2020 14:35

Well I'm now on benefits after losing my job due to covid, I'm not particularly struggilng at the moment and have saved for it over the past few months and I would have sold my first born to get my hands on one Grin alas they all sold out in seconds, despite me being up most of the night and on my phone and the dcs tablets most of the day, refreshing every page known to man.

Its doubtful I will be able to get one before Christmas so have said they can wait until next year, their birthday is in January so I've got my fingers crossed I'll get one before that.
Also a shameless ask, if anyone did manage to get more than one and is willing to sell for retail price, as I refuse to pay the overpriced then please do send me a message Smile

TicTacTwo · 20/11/2020 18:02

I was hunting for one yesterday and what a strange turn this took.

Then why do we keep hearing over and over how hard done by people are, how more and more people require access to food banks, how we need more social housing because people can't afford their rent, let alone to save for a mortgage*

You must be the only person who hasn't heard that the richer get richer while the poorer get poorer.

Games consoles come out every x years so gamers know when to start saving. I was hunting for one on behalf of 19yo ds yesterday and he's used his wages to buy it.

Funny how defensive people get when you raise matters of spending on luxurious items in difficult economical times.
Have you criticized people who have bought weddings, holidays, bigger houses, cars or designer handbags all costing far more than a console? What about those who use iPads and MacBooks when there are cheaper alternatives available?
Just because you wouldn't spend money on a console doesn't mean people who do are doing something wrong.
I know that gaming is a popular pastime to bash here but gaming creates more revenue than music and film combined and probably had even bigger sales this year thanks to lockdowns encouraging people to stay indoors and the lack of alternative entertainment available for a while.

Poor OP. Asks an innocent question and the thread takes a strange turn.

DS1 got his paws on one from Amazon yesterday but it wasn't easy. It's been delivered but I want him to check in the box to see it's not a toaster or something. So need another one now for DS2.

If it helps - ours came from Amazon today and it's absolutely most definitely NOT a toaster and currently has DH attached to it.
Sparklingbrook · 20/11/2020 20:32

@DominaShantotto that's good to hear. When he said he had managed to get hold of one I was pleased but also concerned. I read an article where someone got a deep fat fryer instead.Shock
He now wants to open it and play it but I said not until DS2 gets his but DS1 lives away so I would never know-I just have to reimburse him. Easy Christmas present. Grin He's getting a tangerine and a walnut in his stocking.

GalaxyCookieCrumble · 20/11/2020 20:40

My eldest 2 are sharing one which was pre ordered and arrived yesterday. I was genuinely shocked how much bigger it was than the PS4, really is huge, but according to my kids it's so powerful, quick and they are happy.

I managed to order my youngest one for Xmas from Very, but I know BT shop and Smyths are getting more in stock in Dec.

PeggyMoo · 21/11/2020 02:53

This ‘feckless poor’ attitude really winds me up.

And also totally unnecessary on this thread!

Back to the point of the original thread, I ordered the PS5 around 4am via the Currys loophole (currently breastfeeding a newborn I didn’t wake up on purpose!) and have now had an email saying that it will be delivered Monday. For what it is worth, it is a birthday / Christmas present for DP and we will still have money to pay for food / our bills this month Hmm

PeggyMoo · 21/11/2020 02:54

Has anyone managed to get the digital version? I would have preceded that console tbh

I was wondering about getting it if I couldn't find the disc version, however it would work out far more expensive in the longterm. The PS Store always seems to add another £10 on to the price of games, but if you are willing to to wait you can get the physical copy cheaper at CeX later.
Tessiot · 21/11/2020 08:17

When ordering over the internet you need to be poised, have lightning speed and ready to strike. It matters not if you are a saluki, whippet or greyhound. It's just not going to cut it I'm afraid even on the most ergo-dynamic keyboard where the long slim fingers of a human are going to win over every time.

I know you are not a cat, because you just wouldn't be bothered.

EmeraldShamrock · 21/11/2020 09:24

The digital is very expensive I bought xbox one digital for DD by mistake last year with disc games. Blush
It is ridiculously expensive as no trade on value on games.
The only goo

EmilySpinach · 21/11/2020 09:33

The digital versions are only really worth it if you subscribe to the corresponding game subscription service. Not so good for someone who just wants to play FIFA / COD etc online with their friends.

PeggyMoo · 21/11/2020 09:45

Oh thanks for the advice - I didn’t realise that would work out more expensive! We (DP) currently have the PS4 which we also use to play DVDs... except we don’t ever play DVDs anymore so thought perhaps there was a saving to be made by getting the digital version!

PeggyMoo · 21/11/2020 09:47

And just to add the one we currently have is definitely on the way out as it becomes hotter than the sun and noisier than the underground after about 3 minutes. I’ll stick with the normal disk one. Thanks everyone!
