AIBU to think I will be able to get my paws on a PlayStation 5?

My DS would quite like the new PlayStation 5 for Christmas, it needed to be pre ordered a couple of months ago which I did not do. It wasn't decided if that is what he was getting so that's why I didn't pre order.
Is this pre order malarchy just to build hype and anticipation or will I really not be able to purchase one nearer to Christmas?
What are your thoughts please?

My partners arrived today thank god, he's been pacing most of the morning. Today is Christmas for him. Grin

Beni1993 · 19/11/2020 15:56

My cousin DID preorder, but so did so many other people that he has been told it won't be delivered until at least January 7th! Confused

Clymene · 19/11/2020 16:29

@Tomcullenisahero

My friend just text me to say Game has released some bundles to pre order. Should arrive mid Dec. A big online queue but if anyone is still looking maybe try there.
I got one. Phew - hopefully it'll turn up before Xmas!
kungfupannda · 19/11/2020 16:36

@Loueytb3

Update - I've just had an email from Curry's to say it will be delivered by 15th Dec. So they haven't cancelled all the orders.
Me too!
hammeringinmyhead · 19/11/2020 16:45

And maybe your computer/phone/whatever superfluous device you're using for your better-than-thou posts on here.

Absolutely. Is it also "sad" that people have bought new phones, or expensive hair straighteners, or new TVs or expensive baking equipment or cashmere loungewear in lockdown?

BrumBoo · 19/11/2020 16:46

Apparently Amazon will have another batch for sale at 6pm, for anyone still hoping for one sooner rather than later.

Tomcullenisahero · 19/11/2020 19:09

Beni1993 that's really fair is it that your cousin did pre order but won't get it for weeks. So disappointing.
Well done to those who succeeded, I did not but I am not defeated, I will keep trying. My poor phone doesn't know what's hit it today with all the refreshes lol.

My DH for the ps5 today as we pre ordered but I just wanted to tell you it's really not worth the hype - it's no different to PS4 and all the games out on it is out on ps4, the game my husband wants is only coming out on PS4 but you can play it on ps5 - seems a bit meh haha I know your DC will still want one but I think they'll be okay with the pa4 for a few months

Tomcullenisahero · 19/11/2020 19:27

Closing time, I hope your DH isn't disappointed. DS would be more than happy with PS4 but I'm having trouble getting my hands on one if those too!
He has a PS4, he got it years ago but it doesn't work properly and my brother who's a big gaming fan talked me through all the resets and ideas to fix it but it's just done I think.
I just thought that if he is getting a new one it might as well have been the latest one coming out but I agree, the PS 4 is probably just as good.

Prudent to wait until any initial teething issues are found and fixed and more games out. Too easy to get caught in the hype. I’m giving it 6 months.

MummaPI · 19/11/2020 19:30

Does anyone know if anymore will be released? My friend was on from 8am to 4pm, lots of queues to be told sold out.

throwaway100000 · 19/11/2020 19:36

A lot of years there seems to be that one toy that is in short supply but I was wondering if people have found it really is in short supply or just hyped up so people rush out to buy it early.

This isn’t a toy though. It’s a major release. Consoles are only updated to new generations every 5-10 years or so hence the high price tag and massive hype. It’s special/significant. And unlike toys, you’re not competing with other parents to snap one up, you’re competing with with people across all demographics so it is much more popular, hence being sold through.

I was walking past game before this lockdown and they had a giant queue for preorders! As in, a longer queue than supermarkets during lockdown #1!

throwaway100000 · 19/11/2020 19:38

You’ll definitely be able to get your hands on one, but possibly not in time for Christmas.

PS5 is a permanent item so eventually stock levels will settle. Would you son be happy with an “IOU” for January perhaps?

EmilySpinach · 19/11/2020 21:44

@dontdisturbmenow

Nice to see that amongst all those families struggling financially with the pandemic, new consoles are outsold so quickly.

My DS says it's waste of money as very little upgrade from the last version. However his friends, who do come from families who have been hit by the pandemic and don't work are all getting one and without my DS won't be able tono play with them anylonger.

So sad that that's what our society has come down too, rushing to buy expensive new consoles because it's the hype. Then come January, we'll read how families have no choice but to use food banks and/or cant pay their electric bill.

This country (and others) really have their priorities seriously messed up.

You have completely failed to understand the market for this product. We’re hearing from parents on this thread because we’re on a parenting site but five minutes on Reddit or Twitter will show you that the vast majority of the people buying PS5s in this initial release are affluent adults with their own disposable income.
TheresNothingIWantMore · 20/11/2020 08:34

This is a massive long shot but might be worth a try if you happen to be in a similar area:

Years ago when you couldn't get a Nintendo Wii for love nor money we got one from Game at Canary Wharf - they seemed to have quite a few in stock.

I'm wondering if they stock stores in business areas to avoid pissing off their most well paid customers, even though probably very few people buy consoles from there? Or we might have just been really lucky with the timing!

No point right now, Game was only open for preorder customers to pick up, otherwise apparently they're subject to lockdown rules. When we didn't get a preorder, we went in to ask and that's pretty much exactly what they told us, no chance of getting one in store until after lockdown and even then 'it will probably be in the New Year'. CEX may have some in by Christmas though. Some people get both Xbox and PS and decided which they prefer, selling the other as second hand. This is how my brother got his brand new Xbox for Christmas several years ago.

Ours just arrived, but can't open it properly until his lordship is home (I'm still having first go though Grin). Just off to Zoopla as may need a new living room to fit it in, it really is a beast!

@BrumBoo
Doh - I managed to post that comment completely forgetting about the current global pandemic!

Sorry....maybe one to keep in mind in for PlayStation 6?!

Funny how defensive people get when you raise matters of spending on luxurious items in difficult economical times.

Ironically, I just had my neighbour asking me if I'd ordered one for my DS. I said no. She said that she was so happy as she managed to order one that should be delivered before Xmas. This is the neighbour who a few weeks ago was moaning about not getting school meals during the holidays and how crap the government was putting children in poverty and that sh would have no choice but to go to food banks to feed her kids.

Only affluent people of course!

@dontdisturbmenow

Just because it's 'difficult economy times' doesn't mean we're all in ecenomic difficulty, or haven't saved up specific this event in similar way others save for Christmas or a much needed holiday. Or should we all live like paupers in fitting with the overall state of the economy?

Ah yes, the usual 'well I know someone who can't afford x, y, z buying something frivolous so obviously I know the circumstances of everyone buying unnecessary items' line. You obviously have an issue with the whole console thing in general (and with poor people, beneath your patronising rhetoric), so why don't you bugger off and start your own thread about 'the poor poor and how gaming is destroying the economy and society', rather than hijack this thread with your irrelevant social warrior stance?

PP wasn't at all defensive, she was pointing out the actual market for the consoles. And she had a point. It's not comparable to the must have toy for Xmas.

Why would anyone be defensive? I preordered the new Xbox. I can easily afford it. It's only difficult economic times for some people, a fairly obvious fact. I'm not in any way defensive about that.

You don't get it! I'm not talking about individuals. Of course there are still many people who are in an ok situation and can more than afford it. The issue is the scale of it. When it gets to the point that stocks are depleted the moment it comes up for sale, it is clearly not just the rich going for it. It's a mass society consumerism matter and yes this concerning when I my area weeks ago, there was mass concern that so many families couldn't feed their kids for one week without free meals.

As a society in a global recession, I would expect to read that these luxury items were not selling as well as anticipated, not the opposite.

BrumBoo · 20/11/2020 13:29

@dontdisturbmenow, as I said, take your rant elsewhere. This thread was about the op and others wondering if they had a chance to buy one before Christmas, not for people look for a moral lecture about the state of the world. A world with over 7 billion people in it, so it's really hardly shocking that a few thousand can afford between £350-£450 on a computer device. Many spend more annually on a phone contract without second thought. Game consoles have about a 10 year lifespan before they stop production (and my ps2 still actually works even though I bought it second hand 17 years ago). They sell well because they have longevity, they're a fun hobby, and have multiple uses. They're also a great way to stay connected or a great escapism during times like lockdown. Generally, they're an excellent investment and if one does need to sell, they hold value a hell of a lot better than most tech.

It's you that doesnt get it! Stocks were depleted straight away a) because they couldn't make as many as they wanted to this year and b) because lots of people have plenty of money. People needing free school meals are a minority, not the majority

Very silly of you to think that. Not only do many many people still have plenty of money throughout this crisis, many of us have more than before. WFH means no commuting costs, reduced childcare costs for many, reduced spending as everything is closed or inaccessible. Lots of people have more disposable income than ever.

DominaShantotto · 20/11/2020 13:35

We got one off Amazon yesterday - just delivered today. The stock times they publicised were "out" - none released at noon - but I popped back on on a hunch at 1pm on the dot and they'd released another batch then.

As for excessive spending - it's the money I've saved on train fares and for DH's Xmas/Birthday gift.

Then why do we keep hearing over and over how hard done by people are, how more and more people require access to food banks, how we need more social housing because people can't afford their rent, let alone to save for a mortgage.

The reality us that people donprioritize gadgets over essential bills or savings and this latest craze at worse time is just evidence of it.

But I agree, nothing more to say about it on this thread and good luck everyone looking desperately for one.
