AIBU to think I will be able to get my paws on a PlayStation 5?

My DS would quite like the new PlayStation 5 for Christmas, it needed to be pre ordered a couple of months ago which I did not do. It wasn't decided if that is what he was getting so that's why I didn't pre order.
Is this pre order malarchy just to build hype and anticipation or will I really not be able to purchase one nearer to Christmas?
What are your thoughts please?

As there's now way to know the answer to this you either make all the efforts you can to find one or give up now. No one else knows either so if you're happy to spend the time or money to maybe get on wouldn't you just crack on with it?

not a chance your getting on Thursday if you didn't pre order unless your happy to pay 700ish instead of the 450 RRP.

Ive got two pre ordered, did have three but cancelled the 3rd as it wasnt really needed.

There's no way I would pay any more than the going rate that would be madness.

You'll have to set up a stock checker alert like this www.stockinformer.co.uk/checker-ps5-playstation-5-console and then you need to be ready to pounce as soon as your alert comes in.

I've signed up hoping to grab one in stock on the 19th, but we've been advised that it might be the new year before we get lucky unfortunately.

@PleasantVille I know no one really can tell me but I was just wanting other opinions. A lot of years there seems to be that one toy that is in short supply but I was wondering if people have found it really is in short supply or just hyped up so people rush out to buy it early.
I have looked but there is no available stock to 'crack on' with and I'll definitely not be paying stupid amount for it, it's already dear enough.
It reminds me of the Arnie film Jingle all the way!Grin

Don’t feel bad about not having pre-ordered! I tried to pre-order and got stuck in various queues with absolutely no luck. So I’m in the same position despite knowing that it was on the list!

Maybe I misunderstood what you were asking, I thought you were wondering whether it was worth making the effort to try and find one between now and Christmas as we know no-one can get one now, I was sugesting cracking on with making a plan using suggestions other posters have made.

I got 3 for my family during the pre-order. Playstation is not releasing anymore before Christmas. They are now going for over a 1000 due to scalpers. I think that is 758 pound sterling...I haven't checked the conversion rate today. You snooze you lose

I've said I'm try but if I'm not successful they're just going to have to deal with it. They will get one but it might not arrive until next year.

I have friends who preorder from several places just to make sure they get at least one. They say if they receive more than one its not a problem to resell them at a much higher price (50% more), because they always sell out quickly..
So im guessing you would have to be really lucky to get one!

Not sure about snoozing and loosing, nobody seems to be in a huge hurry and can wait until next year if need be. They can play PS4/3/2/1 in the meantime. Grin

Sorry OP, it’s very unlikely but it’s always worth signing up to the stock checkers mentioned by a pp. There will be more in the new year if your DS doesn’t mind an IOU. Good luck!

I came on to say this. It’s your best bet, but stick will be gone literally within minutes so you need to be very fast.

I’ve done this a couple of times in previous years. You have virtually no chance of just happening across stock, and there is a huge shortage on PS5s. Some websites are assigning stock from the next wave to fill current pre orders as shops haven’t been given as many as they needed.

If it means that much then there’s always the vile scalper scum on eBay.

Good luck! Odds are slim but you never know. Depending on DS age maybe you can go with the IOU option as mentioned by someone else :) don't buy one off a scalper!

You've got little to no chance. You have to have pre ordered for the 19th months ago, and some who preordered for the 19th aren't even getting theirs on the 19th. They over sold.

There won't be any in the shops either. They already decided to not put any to shops to avoid having massive queues. Its possible that the first time it will actually appear in a shop will be next year.

Keep looking online, but unless you're willing to pay over a grand I'd imagine (and if you do, you're an idiot), you're not likely to get one.

I'd tell your kid now it's not going to happen. And if it does, great surprise for him.

Pre-orders sold out within hours at all retailers.

The console is now released.
Any stock that comes in at various retailers, will be snapped up within minutes as people will have set up stock alerts on websites and people share the info on online communities.
Alternatively you can pay over the odds on ebay or similar.

If you are really desperate, set up stock alerts on any retailers that allow it and join a community like HotUKDeals which has some threads relating to the new consoles and people post when they spot stock available or strategies on how they have secured them (e.g. an elaborate way of using several browsers and refreshing the GAME website non stop every couple minutes for several hours so when they add an extra 1 or 2 Xbox in stock they can add to basket in one browser, refresh checkout screen in second browser and secure the console before somebody else snatches it up).

I would manage DS expectations now. As a last resort, it may be easier to just promise in the new year when stock should be easier to get hold of.

Apologies as thought the console was out already - seen lots of vids on YouTube and on Twitch of people playing them but I guess that's in the US

My comment is based on the current experience with Xbox (I preordered and have received a series S but wanted a series X, still trying to get hold of one) but I think PS5 will be even worse as PS4 was much more successful than Xbox One and I don't think many will want to switch from PS4 to Xbox series.

Good luck with stock alerts and be prepared for midnight queues and similar for new stock. It will all sell out near instantly whenever it becomes available. As is currently the case with Xbox Series X
