AIBU to think I will be able to get my paws on a PlayStation 5?

My DS would quite like the new PlayStation 5 for Christmas, it needed to be pre ordered a couple of months ago which I did not do. It wasn't decided if that is what he was getting so that's why I didn't pre order.
Is this pre order malarchy just to build hype and anticipation or will I really not be able to purchase one nearer to Christmas?
What are your thoughts please?

Two of the ps5s are for family and one is for my adult kids. my family, they paid for them. I simply pre ordered them as I am the person that is happy to sit on the Internet and wait and wait and no matter how scarce the item is, I ALWAYS manage to get what I'm looking for. May take 2 minutes may take 20 hours.

I hardly see how I'm a bad person for selling two on eBay to recoup some costs. If you wanted one, you too could have sat stalking the internet for days to secure them. So what if I make a bit of money on them to wards paying for mine? You know that Sony make money? And Curry's and Argos further push the prices up? I'm just adding another step. And something is only worth what somebody will pay. For all you know they could release more and I'm left with consoles that I can't sell for RRP.

EmeraldShamrock · 17/11/2020 11:44

@EmilySpinach I doubt at 10% below the reason people bulk but is so they can add £100 at least they're very valuable. The warranty is still valid to be sold on.

MustBeThin · 17/11/2020 11:45

Also forgot to mention that Amazon have confirmed that there will be a limited supply of PS5 consoles available online on the 19th at 12pm.

I understand how profiteering works, thank you. I was being sarcastic.

CakeRequired · 17/11/2020 11:55

@HotPatootiebootie

Recoup what costs? You've got nothing better to do than sit around for hours to buy stuff online. Confused So what that you have to pay for 3, that's your choice. You shouldn't be selling them on at a profit to take other people's money when you've helped towards there being no stock. You have no morals for that. But you don't care anyway so dunno why you're bothered by us saying it's a shitty thing to do.

You aren’t breaking any laws, so justify your actions to yourself however you wish.

Everyone knows that there are scalpers but it’s frankly sociopathic to come onto a thread where OP is asking for help to source a PS5 for her kid, boast about your own profiteering, and then have the gall to defend yourself with free market economics.

Sparklingbrook · 17/11/2020 12:21

Yes I am not sure what help it is to the OP to know that someone bought 5 some weeks ago. Confused

This won’t change people’s opinions - people who purposely over buy a popular item to sell on at a profit are absolute scum as far as I’m concerned 🤷‍♀️
Kazmerelda · 17/11/2020 12:34

I doubt it, I think this year alot more people pre-ordered than usual.

Also have been reading online that more stocks won't come in until right before Christmas and they will be limited in numbers.

This happened with the Switch last year, I didn't end up getting one until Feb.

Clymene · 17/11/2020 12:43

It's like ticket touts - it's just blatant profiteering. And a bit weird to come onto a thread like this and crow about it.

I hope no one buys them from you at inflated prices tbh.

timeforanewstart · 17/11/2020 12:57

I have had this with xbox series x missed out on pre order as they sold out quick and same with release day sold out online and didn't get a look in
Think its poor of manufacturers to not have enough ready for demand especially before xmas and so wrong that lucky people who have purchased one then are selling on ebay for double or more of the price
I have signed up for pre alerts but told my son to not expect until next year
Just go on sites early as possible on release day and you may be lucky

timeforanewstart · 17/11/2020 13:05

Think its quite poor to buy extra to sell on at a profit if i found myself with an extra one I would sell on for price paid as they are expensive enough rather than make a profit out of someone else just because I was lucky enough . hope retailers start putting limits of one per transaction on things like this to stop greedy people profeterring on someone elses mis fortune

timeforanewstart · 17/11/2020 13:06

Also some of us couldn't sit stalking the internet as we have jobs to go to

Zhampagne · 17/11/2020 16:17

It would be better to offer no explanation than this . I am usually the last person to defend corporations but the ones that you name employ thousands of people and pay corporation tax - probably nowhere near as much as they should or could, but also probably rather more than you do. Sony channel a proportion of their profits into R&D which created the very PS5 that you needed five of. As a pp has said, you aren't breaking any laws so tell yourself whatever you like to justify your actions but don't kid yourself that you're just another link in the global supply chain.

AryaStarkWolf · 17/11/2020 16:21

Nah I tried on the day the pre orders were released and was too late, got my name down for the second lot but they couldn't say whether they would be out before Christmas or not

CakeRequired · 17/11/2020 20:04

@Zhampagne

I think Sony are actually running at a loss on the ps5 too, that's what has been hinted at, but they make it back elsewhere. Microsoft are probably the same if that's true. So that just makes that poster even worse really, they are getting a profit when even the company isn't.

TicTacTwo · 17/11/2020 20:18

Console manufacturers rarely make money on the console. They make their money when people buy stuff like peripherals and games so the profit is calculated over the lifetime of the console. If you added up the cost of the components, manufacturing etc. it would total a lot more but they don't want their product to be unaffordable- especially compared to their competition.

CakeRequired · 17/11/2020 20:22

Yeah my partner was worried the ps5 was going to cost about a grand. Dunno why, they'd never charge that much. Not yet anyway. Maybe in a few more decades.

TicTacTwo · 17/11/2020 22:00

It was rumoured that it was going to cost a similar amount to a pc. Maybe it was a tactic to make the price seem for reasonable 😂

Noranorav · 18/11/2020 07:52

@HotPatootiebootie I think this may have been the wrong thread to choose to brag about selling PS5's on at over inflated prices. Doh.

I won't be buying an overpriced console as son is happy to wait - they will come, maybe not in time for Christmas but it's in Sony's best interest to ultimately satisfy demand. It's the games where they make the money after all.

Good luck to anyone logging on tonight - however unlikely - may we all find stock!

HotPatootiebootie · 18/11/2020 09:54

I wasn't bragging. People were saying it was impossible to get them. I was simply pointing out otherwise. With a bit of of persistence it's easily possible. I didn't get them ask at the same time as purchases are limited to 1. I didn't even get them from the same place.

And yeah, I really struggle sleeping at night knowing I'm such an immoral monster. But hey, my organisational and buying skills are bloody awesome.

OP, good luck finding one.

Yes they are possible to get if you preordered which the OP didn't. What is the point of your post?
yellowmaoampinball · 18/11/2020 10:06

My son has just asked for one. It would have had to be a joint birthday and Christmas present. As it looks unlikely I'll suggest he saves his money for when they're available.

I am nowhere near materialistic enough to spend hours and hours of my life acquiring shit like this. And I can't believe a previous poster is actually boasting about doing that and then going on to profiteer off it. Yuck, yuck, yuck.

EmeraldShamrock · 18/11/2020 10:12

Fingers crossed for you all.
DP managed to get one through a staff lottery in work as a supplier all staff went into a draw for 1.
We had 2 family members asking one is 22 y.o the other a 9 y.o last year of Santa. We offered to sale for the 9 y.o there'll be murder if it comes out. Wink

EmeraldShamrock · 18/11/2020 10:13

And no we didn't profit from it. Grin
