AIBU to think I will be able to get my paws on a PlayStation 5?

My DS would quite like the new PlayStation 5 for Christmas, it needed to be pre ordered a couple of months ago which I did not do. It wasn't decided if that is what he was getting so that's why I didn't pre order.
Is this pre order malarchy just to build hype and anticipation or will I really not be able to purchase one nearer to Christmas?
What are your thoughts please?

Apologies as thought the console was out already

It is in many regions - USA, Australia & NZ, Japan, Singapore, S Korea.

ExplodingCarrots · 16/11/2020 20:08

I had this email from Amazon earlier. Looks like they're getting some stock in on release day.

AIBU to think I will be able to get my paws on a PlayStation 5?
Shaniac · 16/11/2020 20:10

I tried to preorder xbox when preorders were released and was told everywhere had ran out of preorder stock. Then i sat up all night the day it was released at 8am and i was on multiple retailers for bang on and they were all instantly sold out as well all the sites crashed and theres no stock in the uk or America right now so i wont be getting one for months it seems. Playstation could go the same way so all im saying is dont build your hopes up you will get it by xmas.

EmilySpinach · 16/11/2020 20:13

Scalpers have sophisticated software to swoop in and immediately buy up stock as it is released, meaning it is almost impossible as an ordinary punter to buy from online drops. All the more reason not to buy from them on eBay or similar.

Shaniac · 16/11/2020 20:17

@EmilySpinach is totally correct. They have a software that buys it the second it goes live so normal people like us have no chance hence why despite me trying at 8am all retailers were completely sold out despite it being released bang on 8am.

Shaniac · 16/11/2020 20:18

Feom what me and dp have been reading xbox and playstation actually didnt produce as much as they should have done and have blamed covid, which means the wait will be ages as they havent even built the machines so its not like they have them in a warehouse ready to ship. They literally dont exist.

mum11970 · 16/11/2020 20:26

I’m hoping for a second stock release before Christmas too but ds is 15 so fully understands if we can’t get one. I’m feeling somewhat hopeful as if they don’t release stock and Xbox have their consoles for sale Sony could well end up losing a lot of first time gamers to Xbox. This could actually mean a lifetime of lost sales to that person if they stay with the same console throughout their gaming years, which is often the case. Think they’ll definitely be trying their best to get as many consoles released as they possibly can.

Clymene · 16/11/2020 20:50

'PlayStation is not releasing any more before Christmas'
'The console is now released'
'There won't be any in the shops'

Not true - well they will only be available online.

Having said that, I do agree with @EmilySpinach that chances are the scalpers will get them all. You might be lucky but there will be thousands fighting over the stock released later this week.

RolandSchitt · 16/11/2020 21:01

I've already told my son there's no way I'll be able to get one. And he certainly won't be the only one of his friends not to get one. I refuse to resort to paying over the odds on eBay, he'll be able to get one when reputable shops have stock.

Best of luck to you OP, heres hoping for a Christmas miracle Wink

HasaDigaEebowai · 16/11/2020 21:01

You might be lucky. A couple of headsets popped up on Amazon this week. Presumably returns

PointyMcguire · 16/11/2020 21:10

you can play ps4 games on the 5 - if you get the hardware version of the 5 rather than the digital one...

Both the disc and discless version are backwards compatible, although obviously the discless version will only work with games that you have bought digitally as there’s no disc drive.

In terms of OP’s question, it’s not impossible but it’ll be tough to get one in time for Christmas. Unfortunately covid has massively affected the production schedule, which in turn has impacted the supply chain with most retailers receiving vastly reduced stock.

Tomcullenisahero · 16/11/2020 21:52

Thanks again for all the replies and I've put myself down for stock updates so at least I feel I've tried a bit and I'll keep my eyes open. I'm sure some people will make a clean fortune by selling their new PS 5 for twice the price on eBay, etc. Such a shame that people do this. DS is 14 so totally understands so we'll see what happens. Good luck to those who are also hoping to buy one.

'There won't be any in the shops'

Not true

You call bullshit on this, then follow it up by going 'Well it will be available online'. That's not in an actual shop though is it? Not like you can walk to your local Game and buy one. Because there won't be any there for months, until next year at least. Hmm

And the console has been released, in certain countries. You could technically have one already had you ordered one from there. But there would be complications with it that you'd have to overcome.

Don't call bullshit unless you're certain you're right and you're not.

lioncitygirl · 16/11/2020 22:32

no chance now - i mean you could pay over the odds, but very highly unlikely.

TicTacTwo · 17/11/2020 10:37

There will be online stock on launch day 19th but nobody knows how many stores will have stock and how many consoles they have.

I will be trying to get hold of one for ds (19) who thinks that if I can't get hold of one on Thursday then he'll be looking at 2021

HotPatootiebootie · 17/11/2020 10:44

I managed to get 5 of them on the preorder release. All paid for and being delivered this week. They are a very pricey item and I'm hoping that I can sell two on to reduce the over all cost of the ones I'm keeping for gifts. Suppose I better order some games too or they won't have anything to play 😂

Clymene · 17/11/2020 10:44

@CakeRequired - the OP is talking about getting one in the U.K. so the release date in other regions is not what she's talking about.

And I buy things from John Lewis regularly but there isn't a physical shop near me so I buy things online. I'm still getting them from a shop. They're only on sale online because of the pandemic, there isn't any other reason.

CakeRequired · 17/11/2020 10:45

but nobody knows how many stores will have stock and how many consoles they have.

There won't be any in any physical shops. Sony have stated its online only and the only way you'll be getting one in a shop is if you've preordered and you're picking your one up.

Go into shops if you want to waste your time, but there will be none there. It's to prevent covid spreading, but if people are going to ignore that and still go in, it's pretty pointless.

Clymene · 17/11/2020 10:53

@CakeRequired - why did you miss out the first part of @TicTacTwo's sentence when she is clearly talking about online stock? Confused

She's not talking about going into a physical shop

CakeRequired · 17/11/2020 10:57

@Clymene

So that people don't think they can walk into curry's or game and buy one without preordering. As I said in my previous message, Sony have done this to reduce covid spreading so there aren't massive queues to buy one. Anyone who goes shopping for one in physical shops is wasting their time, there won't be any.

And I know they are only online because of the pandemic. It's you who was calling bullshit on that to everyone on the thread. Grin

DanielRicciardosSmile · 17/11/2020 11:02

Based on our experience of getting a PS4 back when that launched, I'd say your chances are very slim.

How old is DS (apologies if you've said, I skimmed through quickly and may have missed it)? Would he accept money to buy one in January? We managed to get our PS4 a couple of days into the New Year so I'd anticipate stock becoming available around that time again.

I'm sure of you managed to pay out right for 5 of them you can afford a game without screwing a profit out of people blocked from buying online as others buy 5.
BIL bought 5 xbox consoles too so he could make a few quid over charging desperate parents he is that type.

CakeRequired · 17/11/2020 11:16

Agreed. It's pretty shitty of you @HotPatootiebootie to do that. You've had £2250 to spend on multiple ps5s and you're gonna sell some for a profit. Some people just have no morals though.

EmilySpinach · 17/11/2020 11:29

Maybe @HotPatootiebootie could offer to sell OP one of her PS5s at RRP - or even 10% below to compensate for the loss of warranty when selling on.

Hmm
MustBeThin · 17/11/2020 11:30

I ordered 2 (disc versions) from different retailers to hopefully make sure I get one. I actually managed to get one straight after the press event at about 11:30pm even though it said you wouldn't be able to pre order until the following day. If 2 consoles arrive on Thursday I'll be sending one straight back unopened. I'd sell it on at the price I paid for it but I've never sold anything privately in my life. I get worried about what would happen if there was a problem with the console after they buyer got it home. Especially when there are always problems with release day consoles. Can't stand people buying loads and selling them on for a massive profit. Angry
