To think why this is one of the reasons we have an obesity problem.

Friend on facebook has put about 2 stone on this past year. She posted a selfie the other day with a statement saying how she's finally learning to love herself, she may not be perfect but it's her body and she loves it!!! She's on the verge of being obese and suffers with chronic backache. Of course she had comments saying 'looking good hun' 'you beauty!' Etc.

I've noticed quite a lot of younger ones doing this 'be fat and proud' crap.

Am I wrong to think that this along with many other things is why we have an obesity problem.

OP posts:
Indoctro · 27/09/2020 16:38

I agree . There is nothing to be proud about being overweight.

Frenzies · 27/09/2020 16:39

Yes, you’re being unreasonable. Fat-shaming has never made anyone lose weight successfully.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 27/09/2020 16:39

Why don't you comment this in her wall OP? Just tell her she shouldn't like or love herself coz she is a fat cow.

AnneLovesGilbert · 27/09/2020 16:41

@Frenzies

Yes, you’re being unreasonable. Fat-shaming has never made anyone lose weight successfully.
Has OP suggested fat shaming would have helped or that she was thinking of doing it?
Chicchicchicchiclana · 27/09/2020 16:41

No, I don't think so. There are many reasons for obesity, this really isn't one of them.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 27/09/2020 16:42

What would you prefer people to say in response?

TillyTheTiger · 27/09/2020 16:42

There are many reasons why someone might be overweight.
Body acceptance and a refusal to believe that weight = worth is NOT one of them.

Pelleas · 27/09/2020 16:43

YABU. There might be any number of reasons why your friend has gained weight. I doubt, though, that it's because people have posted comments on Facebook saying that she looks good at a larger weight. I also doubt that, were people to post negative comments about her weight, that would make it any easier for her to lose the weight if she wanted to.

AnneLovesGilbert · 27/09/2020 16:43

It’s possible to be beautiful and fat. You’re going to get torn to shreds. Normalising obesity isn’t helping things on a national level, no, but I don’t think other people who see her post are likely to decide to chub up because others have said your friend looks good.

MJMG2015 · 27/09/2020 16:43

@Indoctro

I agree . There is nothing to be proud about being overweight.
There's nothing to be a smug twat about if you're not.
Kljnmw3459 · 27/09/2020 16:43

Agree with @Igotthemheavyboobs. Copy and paste this on her wall or your own. If not, why not?

My opinion is that while it's not helpful to pretend that obese is healthy, shaming is not helpful either. Ideally she would feel proud of herself and not ashamed whilst working on a healthier lifestyle. Encouragement can help.

CarolVordermansBum · 27/09/2020 16:44

My relative used to snigger at fat people and declare 'I'd never let myself get fat, its not hard to stop eating rubbish!' Well, karma came around and she now has a thyroid problem, along with arthritis. She has put on 4 stone and really struggles to loose any weight. She can see now how much of a twat she was back then. Be careful OP, you never know what the future holds.

Plussizejumpsuit · 27/09/2020 16:44

Honestly what planet are you on if you really think fat people are not aware of how unacceptable they are all the time? Your statement is comp crap. You're being massively unreasonable and goady as fuck what are you hoping to achieve with this thread?

TheSkyFalleth · 27/09/2020 16:45

It's not about being proud to be overweight. It's about loving yourself.
Which is step 1 in positive mental health.
🙄🙄🙄🙄

anniversarywoes · 27/09/2020 16:45

I don't think it's fat shaming. Op isn't suggesting people leave negative comments, just that leaving positive ones isn't a great idea.
Being obese isn't good for your health, 'celebrating' it isn't a kind gesture in the long run.

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 27/09/2020 16:45

I think there is a difference between fat shaming, & actively telling people that it's ok, normal, healthy etc to be significantly overweight. There is a middle ground. Or at least, there should be.

I'm overweight & I wouldn't fat shame or skinny shame anyone. I've also suffered with ED & been extremely thin, so I do know the damage that it can cause.

ThePlantsitter · 27/09/2020 16:46

Yes, people are fat because they love their bodies. That's exactly how it works.

Fat people should hate themselves; it will magically make them thin and acceptable to you.

PottedIvy · 27/09/2020 16:46

None if your business OP.

KetoPenguin · 27/09/2020 16:46

I thought this was going to be about the new Jammie dodger muffins in Asda Biscuit

Mammylamb · 27/09/2020 16:47

I’m fat. This sort of thing does not cause me to be fat.

A tendency to eat too much has caused the obesity: I suspect that the large appetite is possibly genetic

SchrodingersImmigrant · 27/09/2020 16:47

There is hell of a lit of space between fat shaming and fat celebrating. I know what you mean, OP. And I am very obese (not for much longer🤞).

Delamalama · 27/09/2020 16:48

I just meant it's becoming almost normal to be fat now so people don't try to lose weight. I was obese myself 15 years ago but I was in the minority so was desperate to lose weight which I did. Now, it's fine to be overweight as a lot are.

I'm not fat shaming either. I remember how awful it was to be laughed at and called names.

OP posts:
Kittytheteapot · 27/09/2020 16:50

I don't think fat people should hate themselves, but I do think they should hate their fat.

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 27/09/2020 16:51

I wasn't any healthier with a BMI at 15 than I am with a BMI st 28. I don't see anything in the OP's posts that suggests she thinks anyone should be fat shamed.

It's bloody awful on here sometimes.

ShesMadeATwatOfMePam · 27/09/2020 16:52

Goodo, another fucking fat bashing post. There's a new one every day. How dare a fat woman not hate herself?
