To think most women keep hair long to be attractive to the opposite sex?

It's always been said men prefer long hair it looks more feminine etc.
I know many women hate having their hair short and are devastated if their hairdresser cuts of more than an inch. What is the obsession with long hair? I have fine hair and cut it short because long hair looks crap on me but I'm definitely in the minority. Even women who look better with short hair because of their hair texture insist on keeping it long. Do you think that's because we are subconsciously taught mainly by men that long hair is more attractive. Plus all teen girls have that uniform ultra long hair there is no diversity. And no I'm not jealous because I have short hair!(well very short bob to be fair.)

I've had very short hair, very long hair and every length in between. I like long hair more. I don't have it like that for the opposite sex, I have it long for me .

And I tie it up most of the time!

Jonas657 · 19/07/2020 22:37

No it's because I look stupid with my hair short and like it long, couldn't care less what some daft man thinks 🤷🏻‍♀️

lukasiak · 19/07/2020 22:37

I have a round face. Short hair makes it look fat. Tbh, unless you have killer bone structure, I think short hair makes all womens faces less attractive. There are many reasons girls keep their hair long.

AnneLovesGilbert · 19/07/2020 22:37

Even women who look better with short hair because of their hair texture insist on keeping it long.

Have they told you this?

HowLongCanICallitBabyWeight · 19/07/2020 22:37

My hair is thick and curly, I had it cut into a chin length bob in the nineties (under cut naturally) , it was a disaster. I need the weight of longer hair to manage the curl a bit. I also like to be able to tie it up so it's completely off my face in some situations. I don't give a crap what men think

TheTrollFairy · 19/07/2020 22:37

I have long hair but keep it long because I like long hair. I wouldn’t know if my DP (of over 10 years) likes it long or short as I have never asked his opinion. So for me, I’m not keeping my hair long because that’s what men find attractive.
I would be surprised if most women keep their hair long because it’s what men find attractive these days!

UncertainFuture · 19/07/2020 22:37

I do actually kind of agree with you, despite having long hair myself. And I always seem to think I prefer the look of other women's hair when it's long, although I am consciously trying to get out of that habit.

Pikachubaby · 19/07/2020 22:38

I’ll tell my gran this, with her long plait rolled into a bun Grin ... the hussy

OP, what is wrong with wanting to be attractive anyway? Are you “above” such base sentiments yourself?

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/07/2020 22:38

I think everything BUT the length is determined by social cues. Length is easy. I've had mine very short to very long and find long easier. Tie it back and forget, no frequent cutting, looks the same after 6 weeks in lock down.

Straightening, bleaching, curling, all that I agree, but not length.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 19/07/2020 22:38

But women in general seem to avoid short haircuts even if it suits them.

I've had short, long and everything in between hair. Currently very short. For me, long is far easier to maintain and will look good with minimal effort. Short needs constant trims, more styling and product etc. So long is most definitely for my (lazy) self!

PurpleFlower1983 · 19/07/2020 22:39

Most women look better with long hair IMO.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 19/07/2020 22:40

If you have ultra fine hair I find in nearly all cases shorter styles look better.

I’m lazy and dislike the hairdressers, so my hair tends to be long, gets cut maybe once every 18 months.

GrumpyHoonMain · 19/07/2020 22:40

I prefer longer hair because it suits me. Could give a shit what my DH or men think about it.

JazzyJelly · 19/07/2020 22:41

I have mine long because I like the feel when it's clean and soft. I was devastated when my partner at the time cut his long hair, i loved petting that too. But I recognise I'm odd in this.

Staplemaple · 19/07/2020 22:41

I've had tonnes of hairstyles, I currently have my hair long because it's so much easier to be able to just throw it up in a bun if I cba to do anything else with it. I'll be honest, that personally I don't think short hair suits that many face shapes

PositiveLife · 19/07/2020 22:41

I've had all sorts of lengths over the years. At the moment I prefer it long. There's a number of reasons. If I have it really short then I have to style it every day, mid-length is a pain for the hobbies I have. It's just easier to have long hair I can tie back.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 19/07/2020 22:41

I have fine hair but its also wavy so if I get it cut shorter than shoulder length I have to style it. I prefer to wash and go.

Hippocampe · 19/07/2020 22:41

I have super long hair, and definitely not "to look good for men" 😂. I find it's so much easier and low maintenance then when I had short hair that actually needs brushing and styling before leaving the house. With my ultra long locks, I can flip it up into a messy bun in seconds and it looks fine. I just love the look and feel of long hair on me, and after having a very short bob before, would never ever do it again. Didn't suit me at all, and was far too much effort.

8Track · 19/07/2020 22:41

We have will hair, @HowLongCanICallitBabyWeight! And same, I spent ages going for various short and short ish cuts, but it looks much better on me longer and aged hippie

Pikachubaby · 19/07/2020 22:42

Yes, long is easy, you can tie it back for sports, look smart with an updo even if you’re in quarantine Wink, no need to see the hairdresser every 2 months

There is also something nice and tactile about long hair

And it suits lots of people (make/female)

Long hair for everyone!

HowLongCanICallitBabyWeight · 19/07/2020 22:42

I think I'd get bored with very straight hair too, mid length or long you can do so many different things with it, DHs hair is just exactly the same every day, doesn't matter what mood he's in our what activity he's got planned, exactly the same hair. Also he has to have it cut every six weeks whereas I can easily go three months with no issue, I don't have to style it if I don't want to it's actually lower maintenance in a lot of ways to have it longer.

madcatladyforever · 19/07/2020 22:42

Not me I have long hair because when I have short hair it is incredibly unruly and doesn't do as it's told.

Vieve1325 · 19/07/2020 22:42

My hair meets my belt line, and is natural- and I have it so because I like it that way. Not to be more attractive. If anything, my partner moans about it because I moult, it takes far too long to wash and dry, and It gets in the way when it’s down and I spend my life trying to keep it out the rain.

It’s easy to tie up, easy to plait, it suits my face shape, and I can do loads with it- plus strong hair game is in my genes- so I make the most of it.

I have my long hair for me!
