To think most women keep hair long to be attractive to the opposite sex?

It's always been said men prefer long hair it looks more feminine etc.
I know many women hate having their hair short and are devastated if their hairdresser cuts of more than an inch. What is the obsession with long hair? I have fine hair and cut it short because long hair looks crap on me but I'm definitely in the minority. Even women who look better with short hair because of their hair texture insist on keeping it long. Do you think that's because we are subconsciously taught mainly by men that long hair is more attractive. Plus all teen girls have that uniform ultra long hair there is no diversity. And no I'm not jealous because I have short hair!(well very short bob to be fair.)

@cuntryclub Anyone would think femme lesbians or long-haired lesbians - and I've met a few - don't exist.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 19/07/2020 23:18

I prefer my hair long because it's easier to just tie it up than it is to have to blow dry it and style it as I have to do when it's short.

VetOnCall · 19/07/2020 23:18

I have naturally very curly hair which would stick straight out sideways/up if I cut it short, or would look like an old lady perm. I do like the way it looks long - it's about bra-strap length - but the length/weight also takes some of the volume out of the curl, I prefer it tumbling rather than voluminous. I also do a lot of running/Crossfit and need to be able to tie it up out of the way.

nocoolnamesleft · 19/07/2020 23:19

I have long hair because it's so much easier to look after, and I'm crap with hair.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 19/07/2020 23:19

I cannot stand short hair on anyone (I even like a man bun). My DM chopped off all of my hair when I was about 6 and I was mistaken for a boy for ages. It traumatised me to the point of not wearing trousers or jeans until my 20'sBlush.

eaglejulesk · 19/07/2020 23:19

I'm with you OP. Every day I see women who would look much better if they had their hair cut - not necessarily totally short, but shorter than they have it. I particularly hate seeing long straggly thin hair on little girls! My hair, because of it's texture, looks much better short - but also I think short cuts look sassy and cute.

For those who say long hair is easier - I just wash my hair and go! I don't brush or comb it, I never have to dry it, if it looks unruly I simply spray a bit of water on it and I'm good to go. Couldn't be simpler.

nokidshere · 19/07/2020 23:21

I have a love/hate relationship with my curly/frizzy/unruly hair. The shortest I've ever had it is a chin bob length but then it's unruly and I need to straighten it into a shape, when it's long (past shoulder length) I can wash and leave it curly because the weight helps a lot. But also I can tie it up out of the way.

I style my cut to suit how I'm feeling at the time, nothing to do with a mans view of it.

BTW I don’t think you’ll be able to get many people on here admitting that they have long hair because men like it, in the same way that women insist they shave their bits and bobs “because they like it” and that they’re not influenced in any way. We don’t actually know where our influences come from and to another society they would seem weird!

Megan2018 · 19/07/2020 23:21

I have long hair because I like it and it’s practical for me.
I wear it up almost all the time to stop DD yanking it, to tie it back for under a riding hat and it rarely needs cutting so very low maintenance (it is coloured but that is nothing to do with length).
Short hair looks dreadful on me.

But I will admit to being fond of having it pulled by DH too Wink

Ponoka7 · 19/07/2020 23:21

I also like the option of an updo, as a change.

Lemonmaid · 19/07/2020 23:21

YABU. Short hair would be very unflattering on me. My longish hair is one of my few best features.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 19/07/2020 23:21

But you must admit one of the common insults to a woman with short hair is "You look like a lesbian" Which proves how ingrained our beliefs are.

My long hair is part of me. no other reason. it was cut short when I was 12 and I hated it and didn't feel myself at all. It's been long ever since. Most women into fashion will have it cut short in an instant if it is mentioned to be the new 'in thing'.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 19/07/2020 23:22

I do think that shoulder length hair looks better on many women than the long straggly extensions that they insist on having.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 19/07/2020 23:22

To add I dont believe for one minute lesbian=short hair.

I have long hair for a few reasons, one being that I feel it will make me more attractive to men. And there’s nothing bad about that, it’s no different to any of the other things we do (grooming, choosing flattering outfits, wearing makeup).

Chocolate1984 · 19/07/2020 23:23

I keep it long enough for a pony tail so can scrape it back and look worse.

Babyg1995 · 19/07/2020 23:24

Yabu I have mine long because I don't suit it short.

Crinkle77 · 19/07/2020 23:24

I've always had long hair and I like it. Fuck all to do with being attractive to men. If it was cut shorter it would have to be in some sort of style and would probably need more regular cutting. My long straight hair requires very little maintenance. Plus I have quite a round face and a shorter style would make it look a bit chubby.

eaglejulesk · 19/07/2020 23:24

No, I keep my hair long because I think short hair looks ugly on women. I’ve never seen it suit a woman, ever. Celebrity or otherwise.

I've seen several celebrities, and non celebrities, who look far more gorgeous with short hair than with long. You come across as being rather rude tbh.

Keha · 19/07/2020 23:24

I keep my hair long because I can't be arsed to pay to get it cut that often and I can easily tie it up in a bun with no styling or effort required.

notacooldad · 19/07/2020 23:24

My nan persuaded me to have my hair cut extremely short when I was a teen. I realised later it was to spite my mum.
I have spent 4 decades correcting this.
I looked awful with short hair.
My hair is now shoulder blade level and I'm happy.
I like it long and it's not too keep chaps happy. Dh. doesn't give a shit what length it is!

IJustWantSomeBees · 19/07/2020 23:24

Also as someone said, vast majority of men keep their hair short as it’s thought of as most attractive on a man that way, so we are all conditioned when it comes to our hair (pun intended)

GracieLane · 19/07/2020 23:24

I worry about being attractive but it has nothing to with men. In fact, the more happy I am single the more effort I make. I have had hair at every length.

MsAwesomeDragon · 19/07/2020 23:25

I had long hair for ages. It was easy. I didn't have to go to the hairdresser at all, ever. I would wash it, brush it, bung it in a ponytail or plait and leave it to dry naturally.

Not long before lockdown I had it all chopped off, to a short style, just longer than a pixie cut (which is what I asked for but was talked into keeping it a bit longer on the top). I love it, but it will annoy me when I need to visit the hairdresser more often. I wish I was brave enough to just have it done with the clippers all over, then dh could do it for me.
