To think most women keep hair long to be attractive to the opposite sex?

It's always been said men prefer long hair it looks more feminine etc.
I know many women hate having their hair short and are devastated if their hairdresser cuts of more than an inch. What is the obsession with long hair? I have fine hair and cut it short because long hair looks crap on me but I'm definitely in the minority. Even women who look better with short hair because of their hair texture insist on keeping it long. Do you think that's because we are subconsciously taught mainly by men that long hair is more attractive. Plus all teen girls have that uniform ultra long hair there is no diversity. And no I'm not jealous because I have short hair!(well very short bob to be fair.)

Dont think my long( down to my waist) hair has done much to make me more attractive to the opposite sex but my cleavage certainly has. Men are simple basic creatures. If you want one then I am sure your hair wont matter reli. However promise him a blo job on his birthdays and a 3 some on his 50th and he is yours for life...or for as long as you want him. Its why I am single.....lol

Olu123 · 21/07/2020 18:00

By your logic OP, we could also say men keep their hair short to be attractive to the opposite sex

MrMeSeeks · 21/07/2020 18:01

Can’t say i’ve struggled getting a bloke and i’ve had long hair, short and in between. Prob attracted more with my hair being short Hmm

keffie12 · 21/07/2020 18:05

No it isn't! Your judging people, it's none of your business and in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter

My hair is long and it's staying that way and I'm older. I wasnt allowed long hair has a young person.

I've had it at varying lengths over my life (I'm now in my 50 and have adult children)

I'm now in my 50s I decided just to let it grow some years ago. I have it trimmed and coloured regularly. I look after it.

I have no intention of having it shorter again. Its about three quarters of the way down my back.

Long hair means you have choices in styles you don't get if you have short hair. Updo's, down, straight, curls, waves and so on.

For me short hair bores me ridged on me. Im stuck with one style. Fine if that's what you want. Its not what others want

Though the majority of people will have different reasons to me for long hair it can just be that they like it long because they can do more with it.

Margerine78 · 21/07/2020 18:07

Mine varies but perversely whenever I've had really short hair I've found it harder to style, longer hair just hangs where it's meant to so it's actually less admin in the mornings. So laziness basically on my part, sod what men think.

expatinspain · 21/07/2020 18:08

I have longish hair so I can tie it up. Much more low maintenance than shorter cuts if you have wavy hair.

MyWitzEnd · 21/07/2020 18:12

Very judgemental. I have it long cos its a pain in the arse short.

beeetyj · 21/07/2020 18:17

My sister has had extremely short hair for many years and loves it.

@Ilovegreentomatoes

But women in general seem to avoid short haircuts even if it suits them.
That's absolute rubbish. There are plenty of women with short hair who are absolutely rocking it along with women who have fabulous long hair....If a woman thinks she'll look amazing with short hair then I can't see her thinking she won't bother because some guy might not be impressed. No way. The length of my hair is 100% what I prefer at any given time (long at the moment) and nothing to do with what men think or prefer.....
BillywigSting · 21/07/2020 18:23

Have mine long because it grows too bloody fast to keep it short and I am lazy.

Long hair is much easier to style than short hair and I have neither the time nor the inclination to be bothered with faffing about with hairdryers and spray every month.

Fwiw, I prefer long (clean) hair on men too, and think very short hair doesn't actually suit that many people (though it suits women more often than men oddly enough).

LovelyIssues · 21/07/2020 18:24

On majority of woman longer hair is more attractive

ProfessionalWeirdo · 21/07/2020 18:26

I haven't RTFT as I've only just seen this, but when I was a child I was forced to wear my hair very short. It didn't suit me, and I was often mistaken for a boy - something which I found very upsetting. As soon as I was old enough to have any say in the matter, I grew my hair, partly as an act of rebellion. Even now, I prefer to wear it slightly longer even though it's more effort. It's nothing to do with whether or not men prefer it; it's just that on me, short hair looks wrong.

irisheyesaresmiling7 · 21/07/2020 18:26

I've had my hair bum length, pixie cut and everywhere else in between, but now keep it long because it very curly and it's a real messy pain when short.
Also the fact that my face really does not suit short hair but mainly because I love it long and it's certainly not for any man's benefit, not even my DH who couldn't care less what length it is!

littlejlb · 21/07/2020 18:31

I have had my hair just below the shoulder but have also had it really short and loved it short. I have it long now because I can't afford to maintain a short length and as a mum and working 5 days a week, its just easy to keep it long so I can tie it up when I cant be bothered to do anything with it.

Middersweekly · 21/07/2020 18:33

I’ve had short bob length hair to long long hair. The short graduated bob took way more time, effort and styling to maintain than the long hair which I blow dry (or leave to dry on it own) and hey presto it’s styled. It also looks better on me. Hair styles go in and out of fashion and I think at the moment long hair is seen as more fashionable. I’d say most women actually compare themselves to other women and couldn’t give a hoot what men think!

curvie8 · 21/07/2020 18:35

@Hippocampe

I have super long hair, and definitely not "to look good for men" 😂. I find it's so much easier and low maintenance then when I had short hair that actually needs brushing and styling before leaving the house. With my ultra long locks, I can flip it up into a messy bun in seconds and it looks fine. I just love the look and feel of long hair on me, and after having a very short bob before, would never ever do it again. Didn't suit me at all, and was far too much effort.
Me too, I loved my short hair but it was high maintenance
Localocal · 21/07/2020 18:37

I think there is a lot of truth to what you say, but we do a lot of things to attract the opposite (or same) sex and compete for mates. What concerns me is that we seem to be willing to do more and more in this pursuit - I understand young women now feel they have to go full Hollywood as standard, which is appalling. And I believe high heels are a truly outrageous example of this phenomenon. High heels are bad for your back, your joints and your feet - it's shocking that women will sacrifice their health and comfort for longer-looking legs. So I think you are right, but I don't think hair is nearly as big a deal as other things we do.

I wear my hair long because I like the way it feels as well as the way it looks on me. Plus, as others have said, it's more low maintenance than a short cut - I get it cut twice a year, trim the fringe myself, and pull it up in a simple ponytail whenever it's not looking it's best. Much easier for me than styling a shorter look.

Stickystick · 21/07/2020 18:38
  1. CBA (and too tight) to go to hairdresser. Short hair is too much maintenance.

  2. I don’t care what men think, I just don’t like short hair on me.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 21/07/2020 18:42

No, I have lovely curls and I like them long. My son has them too - and he also has his long. I’m 20 years married and he’s got a Girlfriend - Neither of us are interested in attracting men.

Alleycat1 · 21/07/2020 18:42

Come to France. I have noticed that when women here reach about 35 their hair is shorn. In my keep fit class there are 30 women, only 4 of us have hair below chin length and 2 are Scottish, 2 English.

gypsywater · 21/07/2020 18:43

I had long extensions put in once and could not believe how much more male attention I got! The difference was just nuts. Have short hair now though. Too expensive to upkeep and my hair doesnt grow past my chin!

Bluehues · 21/07/2020 18:43

My hair is crazily thick (which I’m grateful for) but I think it looks ridiculous short. Definitely my own choice for me

Joeblack066 · 21/07/2020 18:43

@lukasiak

I have a round face. Short hair makes it look fat. Tbh, unless you have killer bone structure, I think short hair makes all womens faces less attractive. There are many reasons girls keep their hair long.
What a horrible thing to say.

I think short hair can look amazing, as can long or medium length.

There are many reasons people can get complexes about the way they look...

TrishTeres · 21/07/2020 18:45

I think it's a simple kindness and a sign of courtesy and respect to others to take care of appearance and look attractive. I like short hair but I find that long hair is easier for me. I used to have to spend a lot more time styling my hair when it was short.
